I am glad to know that the people of Odisha residing in Eastern Province of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are celebrating Utkal Divas and a Souvenir titled “UTKALlKA” is also being brought out to commemorate the occasion.

Utkal Divas brings ecstasy to the people of the State and when the celebration is far away from Odisha it is surely stimulating. The sense of pride prevails and elevates the spirit and belongingness to the motherland. Odisha has a rich culture and tradition and taking it to a larger audience rests on people living outside. I am sure those residing in Eastern Province of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will do everything to promote Odisha’s culture and tradition and also as a favoured destination for investment in various sectors. I wish the celebration and publication all success.

On behalf of ROSA (Riyadh Odisha Socio-Cultural Association, Riyadh), I express our greetings to our fellow Odiya brothers and sisters of the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, organized under the banner of UTKALIKA, on the occasion of the sixth annual day of UTAKALIKA and publication of this Souvenir. Like ROSA, UTKALIKA has today grown to be a very active and vibrant socio-cultural association amongst the Odiyas of the eastern province of Saudi Arabia.

ROSA and UTKALIKA share a common thread - the thread of love and affection of all the fellow odiya brothers and sisters of KSA. Living in such a distant place away from our home land, it is always our endeavor to not only to maintain our cultural heritage and traditions within fellow Odiyas but also to show-case those to our fellow country- men and others during our daily interactions.

The activities we organize to bring closer ties amongst the Odiyas living in and around Saudi Arabia and also interacting with the member Odiya association of other countries are very encouraging. Each year we celebrate our annual day, wherein we try to present the rich cultural diversity and heritage of India and Odisha.

I wish to congratulate the members of the UTKALIKA for all the good work done during these years to foster goodwill amongst members and for the support given to fellow countrymen in Odisha. On behalf of ROSA, Riyadh, I once again convey our greetings and good wishes on this happy occasion and also wish UTKALIKA all the best for the future too.

Wishing UTKALIKA to achieve greater heights in the coming days.

UTKALIKA-EP.

I am extremely pleased to know that our UTKALIKA is celebrating “UTKALA DIVAS” and its 6th Annual Day on 24th.April-2015 and releasing its annual souvenir “UTKALIKA”. On this occasion, first of all, let me congratulate all the UTKALIKA family members in Saudi Arabia for their dedicated and continuous support to our Association without which we could have not reached this height.

Friends it remind me the way back in 2008, when we have first dreamt of our identity in Saudi Arabia and bring all Odiyas in Eastern Province under one Umbrella of UTKALIKA. Initially we faced lot of huddles, but we took those huddles as challenges, with strong determination and team spirit we overcame those challenges to fulfil our dream into reality in April-2010. Initially we started with 25-30 family members, but due to the continuous effort from all members, now we have reached about 400 members. In my view, credit of all these success of UTKALIKA in the last 6 years goes to each members and their family. Now UTKALIKA is dynamic and vibrant in all sphere and I hope this trend will continue forever.

Lastly, on the eve of this celebration, I wish each UTKALIKA members and their family a grand success and hope to see our UTKALIKA in a place which we have dreamt off.

If we look backward at our own history of formation of independent Odisha, we will definitely find a connection between the Odia literature and the movement to have an independent identity of Odisha. The epitome in this regard is the front runners of the movement were the writers of the then era, e.g. Utkala Gaurava Madhusudan Das, Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, Vyasa Kabi Fakir Mohan Senapati. Gangadhar Meher, founder of Cuttack Printing Company started publishing the first Odia weekly newspaper from 1866, and very well understood the roll of vernaculars for formation of Odisha. It played a roll of social reformist as well as contributed towards the development Odia literature and language.Personally I believe the relationship between language and literature is very much similar to the relationship between religion and spirituality. As religion is one of the many available ways to reach the culminating point of spirituality, same way language is mere the medium to express the thought process, whereas the thought process behind it is the important. Still we cannot deny the role of proficiency of a language, as only a master can bend the words and use it ornamentally. Though both thought process & language proficiency, are important and two sides of same coin, I believe the former comes first in the priority list. When we were starting the process of publishing this yearly magazine and ask our kids to give write ups, we essentially infuse them with the initiation of having an independent thought process first. Having said about independent thought process, a kid during his learning process instinctively questions the belief system and it’s our responsibility not to respond, “Because I said so” rather explain him critically with reasoning. It is Manas Das

Page 17: Utkalika E-Magazine 2015

also our responsibility to listen to the kid’s idea in an open mind. When I look back at the years around which my cognitive intelligence was taking a definite shape during my pre-teens, I attribute a lot towards stories which I read in a series of story books named ‘Aabolakara Kahani ’ (@ùaûfKeûe KûjûYú). The name of the story books itself initiates a sense of rebel and the protagonist Aabolakara questions everything which has been told to him throughout the series. To initiate independent thought process first we should initiate that habit of rebelliousness in our kid’s mind. I am very happy that few kids had given their write ups and kudos to them. As declared in various meetings to submit/publish more Odia write ups, it’s not much surprising that there is not a single Odia write-up from the kids. The mocking aspect as well as the most ironical part of our objective is, ‘Are our kids capable of reading those Odia write-ups which is getting published in this magazine!’ I leave this question to you all and have some soul searching. Apart from the intricacies of language and literature, I am extremely happy to announce that this year we are going to publish E-Magazine and the same is getting published at the 10% budget of last year’s expenditure of magazine. I know few belonging to old school mind set might not like the E-Magazine very much. I request them to think how much we are going to contribute towards reduction in carbon foot print and environment. Also with the saved fund we can even think of publishing this magazine bi-annually or quarterly. Along with this I profusely render my thanks to all who contributed to this magazine and my editorial team with their relentless efforts this publication is seeing the light of today.

Examination is more dangerous than guns,For it can kill all my fun.

It doesn’t allow me to watch T.V at night. For I’ll have to write all answers right.

It gives me a lot of tension,But for me there is no option.

The only way is to learn with heart and soul,To that I may win the goal.

Arabinda Padhy

A Call on Friday

Examination

Friday, A day of religion.A call from God, pray for your fellow citizen.

Friday, A day of relax,A Call from body, let me lie on bed till I disperse.

Friday, A day for gathering.A call from buddy, let us be together for a carousing.

Friday, A day of errands,A Call from wife, the last date of discount at Citymax.

Friday, A day of jaunt.A call from my little one, let’s go for barbeque at a restaurant.

Friday, A day of defiance.A Call from Boss, Oh…No I am sick and out of city boss .

I Love My India

When I am there, I don’t take your care. When I am far from you, I realize that I miss you.I love my India.

Whenever I hear your name and fameI feel myself proud of same.I love my India.

You are rich of resource, religion & culture,Which have found nowhere else in the nature.I love my India.

You have billions of people of billions of mindWhich is your unique and nowhere it find.I love my India.

You have people of black and people of white. You always give them equal right.I love my India.

You give the freedom for all the religion. This is your greatness and this is your passion.I love my India.

When someone do hurt youMy heart feels with sorrow too.I love my India.

Now I pledge to always take your careWhether I am here or I am there.I love my India.

I made a WishI saw a falling starand made a wish.

She came in my lifeand turned it into a bliss.

The spark in her little eyesJust like twinkle stars.

With her by me, I learnedhow to love and care.

Her soft touch and innocent smileMade me forget all,f or a while.

Her angel like facealways glittered.

And make me feelOf a ‘proud sister’.

LifeTick tock...tick tock...life is counting down on your internal clock.

Memories which were as if they occurred yesterday, turn to flashes of moments that seem to fade away.

People you once knewwalk by without a clue.

The times you once sharedexist as if you were never there.

Years fly...friends die...and you never know when you’ll say your last goodbye.

Oh, how I wish I could turn back time, spend it with loved ones and cherish what was once mine.

Or to go back even more, being a kid in a candy store.

How I miss the way I used to feelon Tooth Fairies was real.

But back to reality...back to today, family is scarce and memories continue to fade away.

Tick tock...tick tock...how I wish I could control this clock.

Success comes with your imaginationAll that you need is motivation.Everything is at stake. The rest is what you make.

Your mind, your thoughts and your hard work is your crewStress, impatience and irritation is what you come through.Never give up midstream Just follow your dream.

The result is bitter sweet but you need to struggle thoughIt is such a maze and quite a game show. That you will enjoy the thrill and the drill

Make sure to know what to do nextAs success is going to follow you at its best.

I feel my branches breaking,My thirst increasing,My temper rising.

I don’t see the greens anymore,Specks of the brown sand,Prick my eyes!

Aye Man! What harm what I have done?I provide you with life. And you gave me death?

The Human Flies, The Earth Cries!

Why mankind why?You are the problem from tomorrow’s generation. The hands that fed you all there years, Are in wears.

Indeed with a heavy heart and empty hands,I wail!Oh Mankind ! heed to my cry. it is too soon for me to die………..

Some quotes about life…

✦ Uncertainty and expectation are the joys of life.

✦ The more we do the more we can do.

✦ Knowing is not enough; we must apply.

✦ Willing is not enough; we must do.

✦ A positive attitude can turn a storm into a sprinkle.

✦ Life isn’t about getting and having, it’s about giving and being.

✦ If you can dream it, you can do it .

✦ Keep cool and you command everybody.

✦ A problem is a chance for you to do your best.

✦ Sacrifice is heart of love.

✦ Acceptance leads to peace. ✦ Unless you are ambitious, you do not make progress.

✦ Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning. ✦ It is well to think well. It is divine to act well.

✦ Always be kinder than you feel.

✦ Respect yourself most of all.

✦ An unexamined life is not worth living.

✦ Bad mind, bad heart.

✦ If you can dream it, you can do it.

✦ A day is lost if you have not laughed.

symptoms..There are no specific treatments for patients who become ill with MERS-Co V infection. Out of the confirmed cases of MERS-Co V, 30% have been fatal. Early reports described symptoms as similar to those found in SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome) cases. However, SARS infections did not cause renal failure, unlike MERS-Co V. The elderly people, children , Patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, chronic lung disease and heart conditions are more susceptible to MERS-CoV infections and complications . It spreads rapidly if preventable precautions are not taken and is very difficult to treat it. There is no definite treatment for it,only symptomatic treatment. Though public health

officials are taking great steps to prevent spread of the illness, the World Health Organization say the conditions for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern have “not yet been met.” Spread of disease is through airborne, droplets & contact with the infected person. Preventive methods are proper hand hygiene, use of surgical face mask or N95 mask while coming in contact with suspected case of infected persons(people having cough with high fever and pneumonia). The total death toll due to corona is 403 till now. Though the infection has started to wane it is a serious health concern as it is 30% fatal .

Destiny Again

There is a common saying: “Society, Friendship & Love are God given things and we the human beings are only the medium.”

Nine years back, when I was around 20 years old, I was in love or you may say infatuated with a girl who was living just next door to mine. Every day before her school bus arrived from the school, I rushed to the bathroom, took shower, wore the best cloth with perfume and ending my long 9 hour wait for her, just to see her sweet, tired & lovely eyes. Sometimes I used to call my best friend to wait with me to give me company. Gradually I befriend her cute little brother and spend all the time with him to have a glimpse of her while she was returning from school.

One day, I decided to go to her house and give her a gift. I gather enough courage and went to her house and knocked her door. She opened the door, but she was so furious that, I thought she would kill me for bothering her. She was very angry and her eyes were on fire. For a moment I was speechless. I couldn’t think what to do. For few seconds I was speechless, finally I told her, “I just wish to give this gift to your brother as I like him too much”.

That was the last day I ever saw her, they traveled for a vacation and then I moved from that area, and I had never been able to meet her again. Days rolled

on. Just before 6 months, one day I was surfing the net and I was in Face book. I saw a lovely girl who is single and she’s just 25 years old. She looked so beautiful that in the first sight I started loving her or maybe there was a connection which my heart was unable to define at that moment. I liked her profile details. I could not see her other pictures as she was not in my friends list and I sent her a friend request.

Though she accepted my request, I never got the time to go to see her pictures. I added her to my Messenger and we started to chat, after along

chat she told me that she saw my face some where before, and that made me go to her profile to have a look at her pictures. When I saw that I was shell shocked, as if I was going to have a heart attack. She was the same girl I used to admire 9 years ago !!!

We married last February and we have started our new life. I believe though marriage is made in heaven but it is the destiny that makes us together and made for each other.

God has created both girls and boys equally, then who are we to discriminate between them? What right do we have to ill-treat girls? A girl is never safe or respected throughout her life. All the harassment starts even before the girl is born. As soon as parents come to know that the fetus is a girl, they abort her. In many regions in India the baby girl is killed just after she is born. The birth of a girl child is considered as an irrevocable CURSE on the family!! Everyone wishes for a boy. When the girl grows up she is tortured and deprived of the simple pleasures of life while the son is showered with gifts. Many families even deprive her of the basic right of education. In many regions the girl is married off at a tender age. The girl’s harassment gets over in her parental house and starts again in her in-laws house. Women are badly beaten up and sometimes even killed if they don’t bring enough dowries. She is made to work like a slave. She is further tortured if gives birth to a girl child. This vicious cycle keeps on repeating generation after generation. We are destroying the prestige, honour and future of our society and country by harassing women. It is our responsibility to end this harassment against women. We have to stand up against these kinds of crimes. It is high time that we stand up for women and provide them the safety, respect and honour that they rightfully deserve.

I Am An Odia :A Proud Member of Utkalika “ Those who risk going too far, can possibly find how far they can go.”It was April 2010 when Utkalika was formed. In between 5 years has passed and Utkalika has become 6 years old now. She is no more a baby. She is a grown up child - a child who has its own identity not only in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arab but also in many parts of the world. It has become possible only because of its dedicated members, who love each other, trust each other and work together to take UTKALIKA to the greater heights. It is really a great challenge to start a line organization where you will find each and every members of the team has a voice and is empowered to raise its issues and has a right to support and work for the organization success. This is a module though looks unconventional, where you do not have any office bearers but all the functions of the organization is performed smoothly by a larger participation of its members in a much better way, which a single office bearer can’t do. It has become possible because its members trust each other and have a belief: “We can do the things together better and in a different way.” Our members is our strength- a source of inspiration to all of us. Moreover, our families and children strive to give their best possible 100% to the success of the organization.

Inevitable Change

Article

“Change is the Law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” John F. Kennedy

Have you ever thought of change! Yes, it is a matter of discussion in some way or other for all of us. The most important concern about change is how we approach it, whether in a positive or negative way. If the change itself is positive, we will definitely love to accept as everyone look towards the greener side of grass. However the fact of life is, change will come with full of mixed baggage.

The most interesting fact about changes in life is that we never want to accept the bitter part of life. But many times we accept it because,we are bound to do so. We have no other option and can’t run from situations.

In life everybody has to travel in their own path& its directions are different. But what make the difference is our thinking, attitude, goals, views and our ability to handle nuances of life. Though change as a process, will never stop. But we have to adopt the circumstances and move with it. Life is short and time is running very fast, nothing will stop for us. So the best thing is to accept the change and be the one to drive it, and enjoy thelife to the fullest.

My Happiest Moment ……….

Who hasn’t dreamt of visiting Disneyland -meeting their childhood heroes? Everyone of us, when we begin to watch the cartoons on television, think of meeting them someday. So did I…… Last summer, I managed to pull out a trip to Paris for 10 days with my parents. I was undoubtedly excited for the trip. We stayed in a hotel on the Siene riverbank in St. Germain street. My dad had a fun packed plan. This included visiting the Eiffel tower, Louvre, La Defense and an exciting bullet train trip to Bordeaux to enjoy the French countryside scene and most importantly THE DISNEYLAND PARIS! Around Day 8 morning of our tour, my dad finally said, “Pack your bags to Disneyworld !” I literally hopped around like a three year kid. We had to catch an underground train to the Marne la Valley- Chessey; Disney park. We reached the amazing valley. The entire valley was debited to the Disney Park. Dad got the tickets, entered the park and planned our visit to every part of it, which looked impossible at first because even the map fell out of space to contain its elements. Any ways, we moved on visiting all of them one after the other. First was the Discovery land (Autopia) where I drove the cars from the 1950s. The tracks covered a large area and luckily there were slight showers

that day. It felt heavenly. Then moved to Fantasy land where I saw the sleeping beauty castle the main attraction of every Disneyland (the one we see at the starting of every Disney film). I presume this one to be the prettiest one I must have ever seen. The theme was remarkable. There was a lively dragon right in it, breathing out flames of fire. There were shops lined just a few steps away from it, selling every Disney artefact that every person would want as a memorabilia. The princesses were like gracious swans captivating crowds over a clear crystalline river accompanied by Mickey and his crew.

Next I went to Adventure land and then Frontier land where was the big thunder mountain which is a roller coaster ride on a rocky mountain. Just I and my dad looked forward to ride it while my mom didn’t. Perhaps she was frightened. We found it thrilling; it was so fast that it felt impossible to breathe. After the ride we found our photos displayed in their big monitor, it looked hilarious. Passing through the Main Street which is an exact replica of the streets of the USA, made our way to the Walt Disney Studios which had the adventuring activities. We visited the Animagique, which telecasts the Disney animation and how the characters are created. Next was the Cinemagique which views the evolution of the Disney classics. The tower of terror, a twenty storeyed broken old hotel with haunted elevators that unexpectedly opens wide on every floor casting the people who lived there but now don’t exist. The Toy story land, where we feel like miniatures between Andy’s toys. Then the Rock and roller coaster, another roller coaster that left me breathless. We grabbed lunch packs although it was already past 6 pm. After completing all the desired rides, I again moved to the Disney Park. Roaming around in the captivating valley I couldn’t know when the time went past 9 in the evening. We had to return. I just missed out the fireworks that were to be happening during the midnight. This is the one place I’ll never be able to get out of my mind. Every minute I spent there was a memory I will cherish.

The Person Whom I Admire The Most

My Mom is the most important person in my life. Life without her is a bitter imagination. She is an ideal mother as I feel her true love for me and for family. She is ready to accept pain to keep us stress-free. My mother’s routine starts with her morning prayers and ends up with us. In the meantime, she cooks delicious food, teaches us and checks our health status. She becomes more worried than us if one of us falls sick. She is not only a caring mother but an ideal friend too. Once my friend told me that mother is another form of an angel sent by God to earth who loves to protect her children from many ills. To me mother has become a legendary word when I realized the intensity of her passion in comparison to other relations. On one occasion my mom had to go India for treatment and I had to stay at my uncle’s house. Even though my young brother was with me, I felt sad and lonely. When I went to sleep my mother came in my dreams, I got up and started crying. I cried and cried until I fell asleep. Early next morning I felt her calling, “Uth-jao Sara” as she used to wake me up daily. Surprisingly, I woke up to see just my brother there, then I became sad and I was lost in imagination, thinking more and more about her. Days passed until she returned. I felt delighted and left impressions of love, hugging and crying, as if I was complaining, “Why she left me?” This reminds me of millions of orphans who are deprived of parents. We must respect this valuable gift of nature and we must do what she wants from us to bring a smile on her face. Thank you Mom...... Sara Sheikh

Kalahandi, a district of Orissa, India, was known as Mahakantara (Great Forest) in ancient India. It is also known as Karunda Mandal, which means treasure of precious stones like Karandam (Manik), Garnet (red stone), Beruz, Neelam (blue stone), and Alexandra etc. Kalahandi, the epitome of rich artistic and cultural heritage with its exquisite natural flora and fauna, the colorful and musical festivals with its heart thrilling beats and sounds, the dense green forests, natural perennial rivers and fountains attract the minds of the travelers across the world and brings a poetic sensation to all the travelers for a transformation from dialectical materialistic mind set to a spiritual, ethical, and traditional approach towards the place. Kalahandi was a feudatory of erstwhile Kalinga-Utkala Empire of Gajapati rulers of Orissa. Maharaja Pratap Keshari Deo, the Ex-Maharaja of Kalahandi, in one of his articles expressed his view that the historical significance of naming Kalahandi as Karunda Mandala is based on the availability of Corundum in this region. Maa Manikeswari (the Goddess of Manikya), the clan deity of the Naga kings of Kalahandi may have also necessitated the adoption of the name.

The performer sings, plays the drum and dances to the drum’s tunes. The songs usually are inspired from Lord Krishna.

Culture is an integral form of human expression. It motivates us to create beautiful art, describe vivid imagination in form of articulate poetry, and become better human beings in respect to our emotions. Impact of certain cultures that we have been brought in, is ubiquitous in our daily lives as said earlier. Yet at the same time, we seem very defensive about it. We are ready to fight, and I mean physically, if someone or some entity dare write or express ill thoughts about our culture. For example, if a Bengali made fun of how Odias ate or dressed, it would not be surprising that the Odia would backlash all of sudden with a venomous diatribe against the Bengali, accusing him of stealing all cultural norms of the Odia people and masking it as theirs. This kind of defensive behavior is not just restricted to between Bengalis and Odias, but this kind of phenomenon exists among all us Indians. The problem with creating a glass chamber in which pristine culture can be contained is not a new phenomenon in India but which dates back to at least a century. So what is the reason for extreme confinement of us as Indians in which we adopt new cultural norms but with a great repentance and guilt? One of the major reasons for this is language. Language is not just a communication tool, though that is the primary purpose, it is also a medium is which culture is expressed, protected, and

“Why the Culture of Intolerance?”

Page 87: Utkalika E-Magazine 2015

87

improved. Our mother tongues provide a facility in which to express our cultural norms in the most efficient manner and to facilitate our expressions, whether it may be positive or negative, in greater clarity. The unfortunate reality of our country is that a certain language has become a marker for progressive values and privilege. It is such the case that people are willing to neglect their linguistic traditions in order to seem privileged and smarter than the rest. The language which I am recalling my thoughts to you is this very language that I have mentioned; and sadly people will see my option to use this language as a point of progression just for language sake. What I mean by this is that our people interpret the notion of just speaking the English language as one of being intelligent and progressive. The fault within this idea is that many do not understand that the thoughts that one presents can be deemed intelligent and enlightening, not the language in which he conveys it. Therefore, this is the reason why our linguistic traditions have not improved because all progression is marked in a certain foreign language. This is one of the reason why Indians are very defensive about their culture because they are inanidentity crises. On one hand, they seem to inculcate all monetary successes and foreign cultural progression in a language foreign to them by which they neglect to absorb in their own culture. At the same time, the guilt of neglection of one own culture causes many Indians to be superficially defensive about their own culture that they have neglected in lieu of greater successes. Another reason for intolerance is the false idea that we have created is that culture has to be in its ancient, unadulterated form in order to survive

by which we can relate to. This is a lie because cultures have to evolve or they will become relics of the past. As Kabir Das once said, “Kabira Sanskrit koopjal, bhasha beheta nir [Kabir, Sanskrit is the well (lake) in which all our languages-cultures flow through like a river]” stating the obvious fact that cultures and languages, in which they are expressed, have to flow and adapt to modern times without neglecting its root. If people seem to understand this idea better, our cultures can easily be saved without the self-proclaimed defenders set out to defend it. That is why it is imperative that people be able to adapt progressive values and foreign cultural norms into their own culture as a form of cultural fusion without being uprooted from their very identity. By this, we can resolve the issue of not forgetting our past without becoming intolerant, and hence becoming the tolerant Indians that once the whole world was in awe for. As Gandhiji said, “That the windows be open, and all the winds of the world blow through my house, but I refuse to be blown off my feet”. In this sense, Utkalika has done a stellar job in keeping us rooted to our soil. Whether it is culture or the language, Utkalika has managed to keep it interesting for our youngsters. For this, I congratulate the efforts and hope that this be pursued further. Also, interest for one own roots should not be superficial and that children should be ever interested in learning about their culture themselves. In this matter Utkalika has been able to make Odia culture a popular medium in which future generation strive to express their desires. I hope that this endeavor continues and Utkalika reaches a greater height than ever before.

Life is a gift. Every moment of life offers us the opportunity to grab and seize these moments to enjoy our lives to the fullest. It was 8th August 2002, a sweltering sunny afternoon in the Almana General Hospital, Jubail. I came as a cool breeze into my parent’s life to make their every moment enjoyable. In childhood, like all children, I was also very naughty. Even before doctors advised to add raw vegetables to my diet, I used to eat anything and everything raw. The list is long such as potatoes, onions and even brinjal. My mother had to struggle very hard to hide the vegetable basket away from my sharp sight and small height. However, being the smallest child, I was always the center of attraction. When I was three years old, my mother put me in a private school to learn the most difficult, the alphabets. Then soon I was shifted to IIS, Jubail. Everything changed. School became my second home. Slowly I became lovable among my respected teachers and dear friends. I started enjoying the beautiful childhood moments among friends. I always tried my best to help and support my friends in their difficult situations. Hence they always wanted me their captain. There is a saying: God cannot help those who do not seize opportunities” Since my parents are toastmasters, I got a lot of opportunities to participate in community cultural activities. That gave me the confidence to explore myself and made me stronger day by day. This year I got a wonderful opportunity in the toastmaster Youth Leadership program, a platform to develop my communication and leadership skill. In life if somebody offers me an opportunity even if I am not sure I always say YES and try my best to learn and enjoy even they are small moments. In my opinion we should not wait for the extraordinary opportunity. We should seize the common occasions and make them the great because small opportunities are often the beginning of great achievements. And the right man is one who seizes these moments and enjoy to the fullest. After all life is short and it is the moments that we enjoy and cherish that makes our lives a success or a failure

Utkalika : A Journey

Way back in the year 1991 when I graduated from my college, I use to hear lot about this country Saudi Arabia, especially in the context of the Gulf war that took place at that time. Little did I know that time, I shall be getting a job opportunity over here. I came to Saudi Arabia in the Year 1998.At that time I was told that there is a lot to maintain as far as Civic discipline is concerned. I was told that there was no community gatherings that take place over here. There were no Dish antenna at that time, however we could manage to get one or two Indian TV channels through a small antenna fixed somewhere at the corner of the house. I remember to have kept a small tape recorder at the bedside to listen some good music. But things change. The friend circle grew and slowly I started liking the place and my job aswell. It is said birds with the same feather flock together and so are the Music lovers. There used to be small gatherings at home where we started having small musical functions. I am also fortunate to have my better half having equal interest in Music and Dance. Things were changing in Saudi Arabia and consequently in Jubail as well.Infact the whole world was in progression especially in the media and the Telecom sector. From the bulky TV sets to the flat screen, from Handset to touch screen, the development in the Internet

field, all these we have witnessed over here.Probably this gave a boost to the thought process of the individuals to come up with their talents and expressing it to the others. I noted a huge change over these period in the confidence level of the people staying over here. Thanks to Government over here for the law and order situation as well. These company beach houses have been a great place to have community gatherings at Jubail.Once in such a gathering myself and Mr. Ajit Jena, our present chief coordinator for Utkalika were taking lunch together and a thought crossed by which we shared with each other and that was to bring Odia people together and form a Odia Group. We often heard about other state people gathering together and having cultural programmes. We wanted to do the same as we knew lot of Odia people are rendering their services in various organizations nearby.Mr Jena happened to be our immediate neighbor when we resided in Jubail. This idea took the form of a seed in the year 2006.However this remained in our wish list for a while. We often discussed this in our various meetings however some drive was lacking, probably due to the circumstances prevailing here.It is said if something is destined it is bound to happen. In later years we did get a drive from our odia colleague having the same urge.Mr B.B Sahoo, Mr. Ajay Das, Mr. Umakanta Padhi, Mr. Sudhir Senapati and many such interested persons and families joined to the same thought and cause. The seed then started taking the shape of a sapling. A team of coordinators was formed and thus started the Journey of Utkalika, when we celebrated the Utkal Divas on 1st April 2010. I remember to have organized number of

practice session for the kids at our home. Children of Odia families were quite enthusiastic about their performances. The first programme was organized at Oasis compound with a membership of about 30 families and some bachelor collegue. There was a turnout of about 80 attendees in the programme. That evening was quite memorable. The organizing committee had organized a mouthwatering dinner after the programme. Years passed by and each year this tradition is followed on the occasion of Utkal Divas. The programme and the arrangements improved each year. The stage set up, Lighting arrangements, the Music arrangements improved. Our video recordings of programme done each year has been archived and provides the evidence of the same. Gradually Odia families and bachelors from Dammam, Khobar, Rastanura and Ras al Khair also joined the group and thus formed the Utakalika-Eastern Province. Last year we hosted the 5th Utkalika Cultural Programme in a grand manner. Today we have 300 plus. Utkalika has sourced and nurtured talents from various age group. The kids who were toddlers during the first event are now talented performers. Utkalika gives a platform to all our Odia kids to perform on stage, face the audience and kill that stage fear. I feel today’s kids are much smarter and shall go a long way ahead. Let this fragrance of Odia culture flourish among the kids, so that when they grow up and are placed elsewhere, they also remember this phase of their life and contribute their part of spreading this culture and thus pass on this experience to their next generation.

Essentially our Utkalika is a not for profit organization. Today we have grown ourselves form 40 member in 2009 to 400 members. When I say what next does it only mean to grow our member count further? Well, in other words it does count that if we grow further in numbers, Utkalika as an organization will be able to serve more number of people.

There can be many parameters. One of them is teaching our kids Odia. When we announced to give write ups for this magazine, we mentioned that more importance will be given to Odia write-ups, I was well aware of the fact that how paradoxical it is. One of the biggest objectives of our association is our kids and they will not be able to read those Odia write-ups. If we wish we can arrange a weekly once or once in a fortnight Odia class for our kids. Any housewife who wishes to take up the cause may start a class. Every parent is sending their kids to something or other class like, karate, guitar, swimming classes and few kids are even going to multiple types of classes. One more addition will be a burden but learning about our roots will be more edifying I suppose. Just imagine how much it will contribute towards those generations after our kids’.

growth & Inorganic growth. Owing to the fact that we are a community and as mentioned we may not think of growing the same way as a business entity grows, still if we are able to diversify our services towards the members of community, in a sense it will be our growth. As an association we can have tie ups with various hotels, resorts, clubs in Odisha, India for discounted bills for our members. Same can be done for restaurants and clinics too. We all know unlike USA, UK, Canada, Australia we cannot become permanent resident of these ME countries, someday we have to go to our home. Won’t it be nice if Utkalika can strike a deal with property developers for some hefty rebates? It is very well understood these deals will be a complete win-win arrangements for all, as the other parties will get a high net worth customer base. End of the day it depends on our representatives how big a deal we are able to strike with the service providers.

If we think inorganically, as of now we are a very

small team. But here in Middle East there are few more Odia Associations spread out in nearby countries. Kuwait Odisha Association, Riyadh Odisha Socio-Cultural Association (ROSA), Utkalika Qatar, Odiya Society in Oman are to name a few. If we will be able to bring all these forums into a common platform, something like Odia Association of Middle East, then we will be a force to reckon with. I guess, the dreams and objectives I mentioned previously will not be a distant dream, we will have more bargain power while negotiating for the privileges we wish to have.

For achieving all of the above we have to be enough visionary, plan and execute with proper strategy. Till now we do not have our own website. This is just a kernel of thought, I wish to plant among ourselves. Rest all depends on our visionary & idealistic capability.
