When an international engineering firm began work on a major project in Southern Europe two years ago, it turned to UTC Overseas France for a very different kind of help. The project itself was straightforward -- conversion of a decommissioned coal-powered generating plant to operate using cleaner biomass fuels.

Because the original facility was over a half-century old, virtually everything in it had to be replaced with modern technology. And, as is increasingly common in projects of this size, completing the work involved 15 different contractors from 12 different countries, speaking every language from English to

German, Czech, Polish, Portuguese and French.

Normally, UTC Overseas would be tasked with the complex logistics of moving some or all of the larger elements of such a project from multiple manufacturing facilities to the job site, often based on just-in-time delivery schedules. But in this case, UTC was asked to take on an entirely different task: Operate as the site logistics manager, using its logistics expertise to receive and inventory all deliveries, safely store them, and manage their proper sequencing to assure timely and cost-effective construction scheduling.

After undertaking a detailed review of the project and its demands late in 2013, UTC Overseas assigned its London-based Manager of Project Logistics, Jean Nawrocki, to serve as its on-site manager and liaison. Additional support was provided from UTC Overseas offices in France, Italy and Switzerland. The multiple language capabilities of UTC staff, and expertise in the information technology needed to catalog and manage the thousands of freight tons of equipment flowing from all over Europe, helped assure order in dealing with more than 600 deliveries to the site over the next year and a quarter.

Joining the UTC team during 2014 was Celia Pinna, a multi-lingual native of France, but trained for rough work in the Australian Outback. Pinna’ s skills in communication and coordination were singled out for praise by the engineering managers who cited her exceptional performance: “She…helps with many tasks including translations, dealing with a wide range of suppliers, obtaining quotes, and helping place orders for parts and materials for us.” Pinna was also praised for reliability and her willingness to work long hours when circumstances demanded it.

“The skills we have used here in helping manage materials and equipment flows for our client, are similar to those we use in

managing complex logistics for individual project cargo moves,” explains UTC Country Manager Leslie Vaizey. “Jean and Celia have provided just the kind of expertise our client sought when they first approached us to handle this effort – good communication and multi-lingual capabilities, experience in materials receiving, preservation and management, inventory controls, specialized lift and handling skills for larger and often complex systems and sub-components, and overall project planning.”

“With a worldwide staff of over 600, operating from 55 offices in 27 countries worldwide, UTC Overseas has the skills, experience and resources to serve a wide range of customer needs, across specialized market sectors ranging from engineering and construction, to mining, energy production and distribution, canning and cement plants,” Vaizey concludes. “In this case, we met the challenge of working at the site to help our customer smoothly and successfully manage the complexities of multiple sub-contractors, numerous nationalities and languages, a myriad of deliveries, and tight construction timetables. Whether it is deliveries, or in this case receiving and site management, UTC Overseas truly delivers ‘Global Logistics Solutions’.”
