Greetings! To All Tournament & League Tennis Participants:

The Utah Tennis Association welcomes you to the 2016 Tournament and League Season. This schedule is designed to benefit the veteran player as well as the newcomer who is interested in recreational and competitive tennis opportunities. To help you plan and prepare your tennis season, we’ve enclosed a complete Junior and Adult Sanctioned Tournament Schedule and the 2016 Adult League Schedule. In the handbook you will also find a list of tennis facilities and clubs who host tournaments and participate in adult league programs, as well as additional information on Ranking Requirements and how you can start earning points in the Junior Gran Prix program. Please note that all dates listed are tentative and subject to change. Dates are not guaranteed. Check the tournament registration page for the most up to date information. We’re excited to continue the Junior Tournament Pathway in 2016. In order to create a better playing experience for those juniors who are new to tournament competition, tournaments will offer 3 levels of competition:

Open – for the highest level performance players in each age division Challenger – for the junior player with some tournament experience Futures – for the junior player just starting to compete in tournaments.

The Futures events are round robin, timed tournaments, guaranteeing multiple matches for the newly competitive player. We believe that these tournaments are a great transition from clinics and private lessons into tournament play. We hope that juniors will compete longer in the Challenger level – working their way higher on the standings list, before moving into the Open level of tournament play. Adult League programs are thriving in the state of Utah. In 2015, Utah qualified 8 teams to compete in the National Championships. Congratulations to all those players who worked their way through Districts and Sectionals to make it to the National tournaments! Be sure to read the rule changes that are new for 2016 in regards to leagues. We believe these changes will make your league playing experience even better in 2016. In addition to the Utah Tennis Association’s mission of growing tennis in the state of Utah, the Utah Tennis Foundation is a 501c3 dedicated to supporting tennis in the state. The UTF offers youth and adults from all backgrounds an opportunity to experience the sport of tennis. Please consider making a donation to the UTF. Your donation helps players in the following ways:

Scholarships for year-round tennis instruction for those with financial need

Programming for youth and adults with physical challenges Participation in competitive training opportunities Outreach to underserved communities and populations Grants for junior and adult programming

If you would like to make a donation to the UTF, please contact Laurie Lambert, at 801-944-8782 x 112 or [email protected]

2016 SEEDING POLICY FOR UTAH DISTRICT JUNIOR SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS

Open tournament seeding for Utah District Sanctioned Junior Tournaments will be taken straight off of the most recently published Intermountain Combined Standings List of the division in the order in which players appear on the list, except if there is an out of section player playing. This player will be considered for seeding if he/she is listed as top 100 based on the most recently published National Standings List of the Division in the order in which players appear on the list. Doubles Seeds will be taken directly from the most recent ITA combined standings lists. Partner’s ranks will be averaged and seeded accordingly. 10’s Divisions will be seeded straight off of the most recently published Intermountain-Utah Combined Standings List in the order in which players appear on the list. Challenger divisions will be seeded straight off of the most recently published Intermountain-Utah standings list in the order in which players appear on the list.

Points Per Round (PPR) is designed to encourage our players to compete often, puts the emphasis on advancing through the draw and allows players to calculate their own rankings. The Standings Lists will be based on a rolling 12 month calendar. Utah District Tournament Directors will use the Points Per Round Standings Lists for tournament seeding. This system will closely reflect National’s Points Per Round Ranking System. The Utah District will only use the top six (6) results from USTA/Utah Sanctioned Tournaments towards your Standings and Rankings. You must accumulate 1 point to appear on the Standings List. If a tournament is not among a player’s best six (6) tournaments, the Points Per Round will not count toward the player’s standings. Utah District Year-End Ranking – 2016 The ranking year runs from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2016. Each player’s annual year-end ranking will be based on the accumulation of points for winning rounds (PPR) at Utah District Sanctioned Tournaments during the calendar year. A player must accumulate at least 300 ranking points during the calendar year in order to earn a year-end ranking, in addition to the following: ADULTS & JUNIORS: Must compete in a minimum of four (4) Utah District Sanctioned Open Level Tournaments in the same division to be considered for ranking. Ranking is based upon local Utah Tennis Sanctioned Tournaments only and does not include locally held ITA Tournaments. Please note that Challenger Division Tournaments do not count towards Rankings Lists. A player may be ranked in more than one division, if they meet all of the requirements in each division. If a tournament is not among a player’s best 6 tournaments, the Points Per Round will not count toward the player’s ranking. Specifics of the Utah District Points Per Round Ranking System Include:

● A player must win a round to receive any points for the tournament. Byes do not qualify as wins. ● Withdrawals and walkovers qualify as wins for the advancing player and earn Points Per Round. ● Retirements qualify as wins for the advancing player and earn Points Per Round. ● A player who advances because of a default that takes place before the commencement of the first point in the match or because the opponent is disqualified shall receive Points Per Round for advancing.

● A player who is defaulted from a tournament for code violations under the Point Penalty System or misconduct forfeits any points accumulated during the tournament.

The final rankings for a junior age division shall include all players who have been age eligible for play in the division at any time during the year, met the ranking requirements for that age, who have accumulated at least 300 points in the division, and have competed in at least 4 Utah Sanctioned Tournaments in that division. Players may be ranked in more than one age division if they have been age eligible in more than one division during the year, and have met the requirements for that ranking. Once a player ages out of a division, they can no longer earn points towards their lower age division.

2016 Points Per Round (PPR) Ranking System

Adults are eligible to be ranked in more than one division if they have met the ranking requirements for each division. It is important to remember that rankings are not an assessment of your skill as a player, but an assessment of your record and results in sanctioned tournament play in the calendar year.

Tiebreak Rules for Utah Rankings and Standings Lists will be determined as follows: A player whose best event has the highest number of points, second best, third best, etc. through six events. Best random drawn number.

Finding Your Player Record Online: To find your player record online, go to utahtennis.com and click on Tournaments. Click on TennisLink REGISTRATION at the bottom of the page. Then click on Ranking Home – the link will be on the right hand side of the page. Click on the posting for viewing Intermountain – Utah Standings Lists and Rankings. Select your division to view the appropriate list. Click on your name to view your record. If you appear on two separate lists, you must go to each list to review your record for each division. Only Utah District Ranking Tournaments will appear.

THE ANSWER TO THE MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTION: Why does my player’s record state “Does not count toward total points?” Only your best six (6) events will count towards your Utah District ranking/standings. If you have over six (6) tournaments on your record, the ranking program automatically drops out the lower scores, and keeps your best six (6) tournament results. NEW FOR 2016 FOR JUNIORS New this year is our combined standings list for juniors. Your points per tournament will include 100% of your singles points in that particular tournament, plus 15% of your doubles points for that tournament, added together, this will be your PPR for that tournament. This will closely reflect our Intermountain section’s PPR ranking system.

Utah District major regulation changes for 2016 Below Level Players Playing Up

The district has put a limit on the number of players in a match who have a NTRP below the team NTRP level.

1. Teams with 5 lines: Can have 4 under level players playing at one time. 2. Teams with 4 lines: Can have 3 under level players playing at one time. 3. Teams with 3 lines: Can have 2 under level players playing at on time.

Captain or Co Captain 1 team A new regulation has been added stating that teams must be independently managed. A Captain or Co-Captain cannot Captain or Co-Captain a second team at the same level in any league.

1.13 D (1) Captaining more than one team. A team captain or co-captain cannot manage more than one team at the same level in any Division. (If you captain or co-captain a 4.0W 18 & Over day league team in flight A, you cannot captain or co-captain a team in the day B flight, or the evening flight). Non playing facility coordinators are exempt from this regulation.

1.13 D (2) Teams must be managed independently. Captains, co-captains have a responsibility to always have their team’s best interest in mind. Captains should NEVER put themselves in a position where they have influence over any other team’s line-up that is competing at the same level in the same division. Any violation of this will be viewed as poor sportsmanship and a violation of ‘The Code’. Non playing facility coordinators are exempt from this regulation.

Understanding NTRP and DNTRP

The National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) has a primary goal to classify skill levels for more compatible matches, group lessons, league play, tournaments, and other programs. The rating categories are generalizations about skill levels. You may find that you actually play above or below the category that best describes your skill level, depending on your competitive ability. The category you choose is not meant to be permanent, but may be adjusted as your skills change or as your match play demonstrates the need for reclassification. Ultimately, your rating is based upon match results. Players must rate themselves in accordance with the NTRP. When players rates themselves and they question at which level they should play, they should place themselves in the higher level of play.

NTRP General Characteristics of Playing Levels

2.5-This player is learning to judge where the ball is going, although court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability. 3.0- This player is fairly consistent when hitting medium paced shots, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. Most common doubles formation is one-up, one-back. 3.5- This player has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety. 4.0-This player has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots, and volleys with some success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving. Rallies may be lost due to impatience. 4.5-This player has begun to master the use of power and spins and is beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots, and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. This player can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. This player tends to over hit difficult shots. 5.0-This player has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured. This player can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys, overhead smashes, and has good depth and spin on most 2nd serves. 5.5 Open-This player has developed power and or consistency as a major weapon. This player can vary strategies and styles of play in a competitive situation and hits dependable shots in a stress situation. (See Website for additional details and explanations.)

NTRP RATINGS There are many myths out there about ratings and how the NTRP system works so hopefully you all have read the information on our website to put those myths to rest but if you have not, here is some information that is pertinent for you as a captain to know.

Self Rating: Any player that has not participated in NTRP tournaments or league tennis before through the USTA will need to self-rate in order to obtain a rating to be eligible for league registration. The self-rate questionnaire will be available to you when you go to register for a team and you can complete the questionnaire at that time. Please answer the questions honestly so the system can generate the appropriate rating. See disqualification and penalties below regarding self-rating. Also see “self-rating” in the How To section for instructions on the process as well as how to appeal your self-rate if necessary.

Penalties: Per the District League Regulations “Players who do not have a valid NTRP rating level on file in TennisLink shall self rate in accordance with the Gen-eral & Experienced Player Guidelines Supplement to the NTRP Guidelines and complete the self rating process on TennisLink when registering for a team. Failure to do so, or omission of information regarding a player’s tennis history will subject the player, the captain and/or others who condoned inaccurate self rating to sanctions and disqualification. Self ratings are valid for two years from the date issued or until replaced by a dynamic or computer rating.

DNTRP: The DNTRP system or Dynamic NTRP system runs all the leagues except the Fall Indoor League. After each match played, the respective players rating are recalculated down to the hundredth of a point based on the results of that match and the players current ratings going into the match. It is vitally im-portant that all scores be reported within 72 hours of match completion so the system can work efficiently. Please see “Disqualification” below to see how this system could affect your players.

Disqualification: During the USTA Adult League season the NTRP system will be calculating after each match played. If at any time a player’s rating surpasses the allowed level they will receive a strike. If a player receives three strikes within the current season (including playoff) they will be disqualified and their scores and results for that league will be reversed.

The only rating types that are affected by this are S (self-rated), If you have a player on your team that falls into this rating category then they are sub-ject to dynamic disqualification. If you have received a C (computer) rating then you are no longer subject to dynamic disqualification.

WHAT IS ? TennisLink is a user-friendly web based system designed as a means to provide secure communication and flow of information between the USTA and its members via the Internet. TennisLink allows captains to register teams, enter and confirm scores, access team rosters, standings, schedules, blank score cards and renew USTA memberships. HOW DO I ACCESS ? You must go through TennisLink to report a score. TennisLink can be accessed by clicking on the League drop down menu and choosing TennisLink leagues on our website at utahtennis.com. HOW TO REPORT SCORES Both teams should be involved in the reporting of scores. One team reports the scores, the other team should confirm or dispute the entered scores. Prior to leaving the match site, captains should decide who will be reporting and who will be confirming the scores. From the TennisLink page, click on Record a Score. (A message will appear if the scorecard is in use.) Type in the match number. On the blank scorecard, enter the scheduled date of the match. Select players from the drop down list for home and visiting teams. Click the winner button identifying the winning team for each court. Enter the scores for each match from the winner’s perspective (6-4,6-3 not 4-6,3-6). Select the final outcome (completed ,retired, default, double default) for each match from the completed drop-down list.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR A LEAGUE ON

If an error message occurs please make sure a. All 3rd set scores are recorded as 1-0. b. Make sure the scores are input from the winning player’s perspective. What should I do if there is a error on the score card? Captains and players are not able to make any changes to score cards once they have been submitted. If you notice an error, the captain of either team can dispute the match scores. It

is suggested that you notify the Adult League coordinator Jill Bruderer of the dispute, score card # and what needs to be corrected. We will then contact the opposing team to confirm the error before adjusting the score card. What should I do if not all of the positions have completed the match?
