Summary

Incumbents in the Graphic Designer series conceptualize, design, and produce print, online, and multimedia projects consistent with the University’s standards

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Graphic Designer II is distinguished from the Graphic Designer I in that incumbents in the II level have the knowledge and experience to complete more complex and/or technical duties in support of a larger program or college.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

This classification may train and guide less experienced employees and/or student workers.

Typical Functions

1. Conceptualizes, designs, and produces curriculum, training, and/or marketing materials such as flyers, ads, brochures, logos, office signage, and displays consistent with the University’s graphic identity standards.

2. Plans and designs technical products and projects for websites and other multimedia platforms.3. Designs and develops technical products integrating various media, such as graphics, still

images, video, audio, animation, and 3-D models.4. May assist the webmaster with maintaining, creating, and designing web content in accordance

with website guidelines. Serves as the webmaster’s replacement when necessary.5. May visually communicate ideas and concepts through tools besides computer software

including drawing, sketching, and mocking up physical examples. 6. Performs quality assurance and compatibility testing on all products prior to release as

necessary.7. Consults with faculty and staff to identify their graphics needs, budget constraints, and

reasonable deadlines for requested projects.8. Ensures that marketing materials visually communicate USU’s mission.9. Aids department with planning a marketing campaign.10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

1. Skilled in the utilization of specified computer programs such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

2. Knowledge of core design elements such as type, contrast, alignment, proximity, and layout.3. Knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design.4. Ability to create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques,

and equipment.5. Knowledge of graphic layout and photographic requirements and procedures.6. Ability to analyze graphic and technical information and create interpretive illustrations.7. Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.8. Ability to analyze and interpret user graphic requirements.9. Meticulous attention to detail.10. Ability to complete multiple assignments and meet set deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree plus two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
