Our motivation
Electricity Cost = Fixed Cost (Poles, Wires, Equipment) + LEAC
USVI Energy Roadmap

Our motivationEIA: annual average price of low sulfur crude oil real 2009 dollars per barrel
Factors not considered:
USVI Energy Roadmap
EDIN is an international partnership between USA, New Zealand, and Iceland started in 2008.
Why Islands? Islands are often highly dependent on fossil fuels for
electricity and transportation and often have very high retail electricity rates
Islands often have abundant renewable resources and small populations, so are ideal places to showcase the future of high renewable energy penetration.
What is EDIN?
USVI Energy Roadmap
EDIN-USVI Background
Oct 2009 – First meeting
of Energy Action Team
Feb 2010 – MOU Signing
(DOE, DOI, USVI)
June 2010 – First official meeting
of Energy Working Groups
in St. Thomas
Nov 2010 – Working Groups meet in St. Croix to continue
Roadmap development

Feb 2010 – Declaration of our mission
At the MOU signing ceremony with DOE and DOI, Gov. deJongh, Jr. announced his goal to reduce USVI’s dependence of fossil fuel by 60% by 2025.
“There is no reason why the Virgin Islands cannot be the leaders in clean energy deployment in the Caribbean,” deJongh said.

Key Findings
• It can be done, but only with all stakeholders pulling together, in the same direction.
• The kitchen sink – it’s going to take everything to get to 60% by 2025.
• WAPA must lead. All scenarios include waste-to-energy and increased generation/water efficiency.
