2014 National and USTA Pacific Northwest League Regulations Now Available The 2014 National and USTA/PNW League Regulations are now avail-able. You can view the new regulations on our website at http://www.pnw.usta.com/USTA-League/regulations/. Here are some important changes to the USTA/PNW Regulations: • Added 2.5 and 4.5 divisions to Adult 40 & Over (these will be Sec-tional events with no National advancement) • One Doubles: Maximum of 4 players on a team. • Match Scoring: Regular Scoring (play out deuces) for all areas ex-cept NW Wash. • Single Teams for One Doubles, Mixed 55 & Over, Adult 65 & Over Roster Additions: May be added until the deadline of most leagues (not the day before Sectionals). • Under Regulation 1.9c it says “The PNW does not authorize separate local weekday leagues.” This means an area cannot have a separate weekend league and separate weekday league and then BOTH teams advance to Sectionals. NW Wash. and SW Wash. may continue to do weekday leagues but only one team from each level will advance to Sectionals (this refers to how the league is set-up). • ALL players on a roster MUST play 2 matches (it’s OK if one is a default) before playing in local league playoffs. This is one of the major changes for this season. The old rule allowed zero matches played if players registered prior to the first team match. If it’s a tournament-style league (i.e. Central Wash. or leagues in Alaska) then only one match must be played before local playoffs. • For all age divisions, players must play in a minimum of two matches to qualify for Sectionals. For major changes to the National Regulations, please open the link listed above that highlights the major changes on the first few pages.

Kids Can Participate in Free Local USTA Tennis Play Events in September Facilities and organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest will be hosting USTA Free Tennis Play Events in September in celebration of the Nickelode-on TV network’s 10th annual Worldwide Day of Play. The events are part of a nationwide effort to get kids active and involved in tennis during National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in September. There will be thousands of tennis events throughout the country, each show-casing how fun and easy it now is for families to get into the sport, as well as providing a great way for parents to spend time with their children while keeping them active. To find a USTA Free Tennis Play Event in the Pacific Northwest near you, please visit www.youthtennis.com.

USTA/PNW Adult Invitational Tournaments Return in October and November The USTA/PNW Invitational tournaments will be held again this year for both Age Division and NTRP players. Tennis & Teamwork: Kids & Instructors Love TAZ at Littlerock Elementary

The Tennis Afterschool Zone (TAZ) came to Littlerock Elementary School in Olympia, Wash., this

past May and June. The program took place outdoors under a play shed roof for seven sessions

plus a season-ending Play Day.

“The kids were really engaged in TAZ,” said Joy

Snodgrass, the program’s Site Director at Littlerock

(at top in photo). “We are developing ongoing tennis

players who will always have fun playing.”

“TAZ is a great way for kids to get introduced to ten-

nis in a fun and safe environment at school,” added

Gail Benzler of the USTA Pacific Northwest (USTA/

PNW) staff. “We always want to help parents and

students find ongoing play opportunities.”

The eight kids enrolled in the Littlerock pilot not only

learned to play but also had fun. “The kids are learn-

ing so fast and no one seems too advanced or too

inexperienced to benefit from the program,” said Lit-

tlerock instructor Karen Abbott. “I’ve been having a

great time with the children and they are happy and

learning so much.”

Due to excellent word of mouth and community sup-

port, TAZ will expand to three Tumwater, Wash., schools for fall: Tumwater Hills, East Olympia Ele-

mentary and Littlerock. This expansion means additional site directors and instructors are needed.

Most instructors and site directors had little or no experience delivering tennis before TAZ and that’s

just fine. The USTA/PNW provides the necessary curriculum and training. It’s easy to apply. Go to

www.surveymonkey.com/s/TAZapp2013 and become part of the TAZ team.

“TAZ was great for everyone, kids and instructors alike. It was fun to experience the kids’ different

personalities and I’m looking forward to the next TAZ sessions,” said Charlet Herrick, Littlerock TAZ

instructor.

For more information on TAZ in Western Washington, including ways to get your school involved or

to become part of the TAZ team, contact Gail Benzler at [email protected].
