For more information on how to get around Falmouth and what there is to see and do in the area, please visit the Falmouth tourist information website https://www.falmouth.co.uk/.

Field excursionFollowing this year’s conference there will be a field excursion around Falmouth Bay and Helford Passage. We will be delving into aspects of Devonian sedimentology, Variscan and post-Variscan structural geology and tectonics, including Early Permian magmatism (lamprophyres), and visiting some excellent Quaternary sections. The excursion will be jointly led by Robin Shail, Peter Ealey, Arjan Dijkstra, Kate Smith and Sam Hughes.

With unpredictable weather conditions in January, the provisional itinerary is purposely kept ambiguous. However, with an afternoon low tide it is likely to involve an early lunch at the Ferryboat Inn with a slightly longer afternoon session.

The excursion will depart from the Falmouth Hotel. To limit the amount of cars travelling around narrow lanes, two minibuses will be laid on with a capacity of 32 passengers. The minibuses will then drop people back at the hotel following the trip which will be around 4 pm. For most people travelling home after the trip it will involve passing through Falmouth anyway so please don’t feel you need to drive separately if you can avoid it.

Please ensure you dress appropriately for fieldwork in January. Although Falmouth Bay is slightly sheltered from the prevailing winds the weather can still be wet, windy and cold. We will be visiting outcrops at coastal localities, so sturdy footwear and hard hats are essential.
