USLI is committed to making a difference through community service, fundraising and volunteering. We consistently reach out to several organizations including Cristo Rey Philadelphia, Nothing But Nets, La Salle Academy and John Jenks Elementary. We also invite children into our facility for various programs like the Children’s Holiday Party and Bring Your Child to Work Day. Additionally, USLI donates funds after catastrophic events. Most recently, our company made donations to the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines.

CARE2 FundThe CARE2 Fund was established to give members of the USLI community the opportunity to request donations to charities or causes to which they have a personal connection. In 2013, we donated $50,000. Support for these dona-tions comes from the company, our annual community fundraisers, proceeds from sales of CARE2 Wear Gear and contributions from community mem-bers and customers. In 2012, the mission of the CARE2 Fund at USLI Inc. was expanded. The Fund now also serves as a portal for funds raised from the community to support causes selected specifically by the company. This allows our community members to receive receipts for charitable contributions.

Reading STARSUSLI has participated in the Reading STARS program since the 2007–2008 school year. Reading STARS is a phonics-based program geared toward chil-dren who are not reading at grade level. For the past three years, our partner school has been John Jenks Elementary. This year, we have 42 students in grades 1 through 5 paired up with 42 coaches along with over 20 back-ups.

Breastcancer.orgWe raise funds for breastcancer.org, located in Bryn Mawr, PA. Breastcancer.org is dedicated to providing the most reliable, complete and up-to-date information about breast cancer. Last year, we raised over $14,000 through various fun events in our company including an hour-long kickboxing workout fundraising event.

La Salle Mentoring ProgramIn 2013, we added the current 6th grade students to our La Salle Mentoring Program. This brought the number of participants in the program up to 30 students and 60 mentors. The main focus of the program is bonding and forming strong relationships between the mentor and mentee. Our goal is to mentor the students into high school and hopefully beyond.

BRING YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAYThis annual event gives children the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational events with guest speakers while having a great time and learning about the insurance industry. Participants include children of our community members, as well as those children active in our La Salle Academy mentoring program and Reading STARS.

CHILDREN'S HOLIDAY PARTYWe host a Holiday Party for the children of our community members every year. We also invite children from La Salle Academy, John Jenks Elementary (our Reading STARS school) and Family First. Each child is provided with a host, and the responsibilities of the host are to make the child feel welcome, show them around to the different activities and buy them a gift to receive from Santa. All of the kids leave with gifts, candy, their faces painted and happy memories.

Nothing but NetsWe have partnered with the U.N. Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign since 2006. Nothing But Nets provides bed nets for families in Africa; each bed net protects a family of four from malaria for over two years. Malaria is particularly devastating in Africa, where it is a leading killer of children. In fact, there are 10 new cases of malaria every second. Every 60 seconds, a child in Africa dies from a malaria infection. Last year we raised over $20,000.

VANGUARD VOCATIONAL PROGRAMSince 2005, we have partnered with the Vanguard School in Paoli, PA as part of its Community Vocational Program. Vanguard serves children with Autism and Asperger’s Syn-drome. Students from the program come to our company two days per week for job training and coaching. Each student is assigned a coach and an assistant coach to guide them during their time here. This year, we have 11 students and 22 coaches/assistant coaches. The majority of our students have gone on to attend college or have secured gainful employ-ment. Our coaches report having a lot of personal satisfaction from working with the students and helping them overcome the obstacles that might have prevented them from obtaining employment.

Blood DrivesWe host four blood drives each year in conjunction with the Red Cross. The drives are held at our facility between the hours of 6 a.m. and 1 p.m., and community members are given the time necessary to make a donation during the work day.

Cristo Rey PhiladelphiaUSLI partnered with the Tiger Woods Foundation to create a Tiger Woods Learning Center at the Cristo Rey School in Philadelphia. Cristo Rey opened in September 2012, and its mission is to provide a Catholic edu-cation to underprivileged high school students. The TWLC after-school learn-ing program provides science, technol-ogy, engineering and math education to students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to delve into these subjects. In spring of 2013, a group of USLI volunteers cleaned out the room where the center would be built. As the final preparation for the center, we painted the room later that summer. USLI also helps to fund the teachers, equipment, curriculum and computers.

Kilimanjaro Climb & Kujali InternationalIn August of 2013, several members of our community and USLI customers traveled to Tanzania, Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. USLI donated $10,000 per climber to Kujali International. Kujali International is a public charity and partners with local communities to help establish free and low-cost private schools that provide orphaned and vulnerable youth with the tools, resources and opportunities to overcome poverty and become agents of change in their communities.

Philippines Typhoon ReliefIn November 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, leaving mass devastation and killing an estimated 10,000 people. USLI reached out to its customers, and collectively, we donated $52,557 to Global Giving to help the victims. In March of 2014, USLI sent six of its community members to the Philippines to help with the disaster recovery process. The group spent two weeks in a base camp in Kananga helping to demolish homes that were damaged by the typhoon. The trip involved two weeks of slinging sledge hammers all day and sleeping in tents at night.

Disaster/Tragedy ReliefUSLI focuses most of its giving locally, but when a disaster happens in another state or half way around the world, we also want to make a differ-ence. In 2013, we reached out to our customers and together, we raised over $78,000 for the victims of the Boston Marathon, the schools in West, Texas and the victims of the tornado in Oklahoma.
