OUTLINE
Began as a Coral and Sponge application which was identified as a
key del iverable to promote the mandate of the Cold -Water Coral and
Sponge Centre of Expertise
Recognized that this is a good platform to update other
information.
BACKGROUND
3
In 2012/13, i t was recognized that the
inclusion of Human Use layers other than
those which interacted with Coral and
Sponge would be a good addit ion.
Inspiration for the current version was
the “Grand Banks of Newfoundland: Atlas
of Human Activit ies”
COLD-WATER CORALS AND SPONGES
THE OCEANS ATLAS OF HUMAN USE
Conservation: Marine Protected Areas Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas Conservation closures (NAFO Coral and Sponge Areas, Industry Closures, DFO conservation
closures) Species at Risk (distribution, critical habitat)*
Management Fisheries Management areas (individual fisheries) Large Ocean Management Areas Species at Risk Management Areas* Exclusive Economic Zone NAFO Areas*
Human Activity Fisheries 2000 – 2011 (by Gear type, Region landings)* Marine Traffic (commercial shipping, ferries, Search and Rescue)* Oil and Gas Exploration (licenses, wells, geophysical surveys) Research (Surveys, Oceanographic Moorings*, Atlantic Zonal Monitoring Program, Aerial Surveys*) Fisheries Protection Authorization Sites*
*East Coast Only
