Efforts are underway at Agriculture and Agri-FoodCanada (AAFC) to develop an integrated, nation-ally applicable, socioeconomic/biophysical mod-eling capability in order to predict the environmen-tal impacts of policy and program scenarios. Thispaper outlines our Decision Support System(DSS), which integrates the IROWCN (Indicator ofthe Risk of Water Contamination by Nitrogen) in-dex with the agricultural policy model CRAM (Ca-nadian Regional Agricultural Model) and presentsan outline of our methodology to provide inde-pendent assessments of the IROWCN resultsthrough the use of nitrogen (N) simulation mod-els in select, data-rich areas. Three field-levelmodels — DSSAT, N_ABLE, and EPIC — wereevaluated using local measured data. The resultsshow that all three dynamic models can be usedto simulate biomass, grain yield, and soil N dy-namics at the field level; but the accuracy of themodels differ, suggesting that models need to becalibrated using local measured data before theyare used in Canada. Further simulation of IROWCNin a maize field using N_ABLE showed that soil-mineral N levels are highly affected by the amountof fertilizer N applied and the time of year, mean-ing that fertilizer and manure N applications andweather data are crucial for improving IROWCN.Methods of scaling-up simulated IROWCN fromfield-level to soil-landscape polygons and CRAMregions are discussed.
KEY WORDS: nitrogen, indicator, water contamination, simulation model, model evaluation
