The Basics for Beginners
I. Some Statistics
• Site launched in May of 2003• Stock went public in May ‘11 and the price more
than doubles• LinkedIn is the #1 social networking site for professionals (as of 8/4/11)
• Over 120 million members worldwide – joining at a rate faster than 2 new members/second• 75 of the Fortune 100 companies use LinkedIn
as part of their hiring solution
II. Opening a new accountThe Home Page
After clicking the Join button, an email will be sent from them to verify the email address you provided.
III. The Dashboard
Complete your profile first!This tells members who you are,what you do, where you reside,and what your interests are –
giving them an indication of why you joined.
IV. Profile Tips
Always upload a photo so members can see who you are.
Add your website, Twitter, and blog URLs. * In the Interests section, list descriptive keywords so
your name will be in the results when members search by keyword.
Build out your work experience for each position held. Many companies now allow individuals to apply with their LinkedIn profile. This can be another online resume.
Add industry awards & honors.

VI. Contacts
There are three ways to add connections – in bulk or with a personal message:• Import contacts from your address book(s).• Manually add them in the box on the Add Connections
page.• Option 3, visit the profile of someone you know (or want to
connect with) and send them an invitation.
VII. Groups
If you are already a member of associations, join their LinkedIn group.
If not, join groups relevant to your industry & interests.You can also create your own.
VIII. Jobs
Search by keyword
…or use the advanced option to add filters.
This is where you’ll send out messages, delete, and track others for follow-up (as well as invites
you’ve sent).
