The Declaration, the Articles and the Constitution

1. The purpose of the Declaration of Independence (1776) was to secure the rights of the individual from government.

2. The purpose of the Articles of Confederation (1777-1789) was an attempt to institute a national government that did not infringe on those rights, especially through protecting the sovereignty of the states.

3. The purpose of the Constitution (1789-present) was to secure the power of government over individuals.

Why was power apportioned as it was under the Articles of Confederation?

What we didn’t like about the British:

1. Taxation without representation

2. Large central government (monarchy) had all the power

3. Colonies always had to listen to the king& all power was in the King’s hands

4. King could change the rules/laws any time

So under the Articles of Confederation:

1. Federal government could not tax

2. States had their own laws and didn’t have to follow any other states’ laws

3. No executive branch or national court system.

4. Any amendment required all 13 states
