Steven Zhou US History Mr. Lewis Period 9 Regents Review Assignment Top 10 people in American History 1) George Washington   One of the founding fathers of the United States, general in the Revolutionary War and the first president of the United States 2) Thomas Jefferson   The third president of the United States, assisted in the writing of the Declaration of Independence and doubled the size of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase 3) Abraham Lincoln   The sixteenth president of the United States, helped end slavery (although it wasn’t his main incentive), reunited the Confederate states back into the Union 4) Benjamin Franklin   One of the founding fathers of the United States and wise diplomat 5) Franklin Delano Roosevelt    The 32 nd president of the United States. 6) Theodore Roosevelt    The 26 th president of the United States. He helped end the Russo- Japanese War. He helped the poor/middle class combat the evils of big industry such as monopolies, trust funds and robber barons in his “Square Deal” 7) Harry Truman   The 33 rd president of the United States. Truman authorized the use of the two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Na gasaki during World War II that quickly ended the war. Also used containment against the Soviet Union that possibly prevented a full-blown nuclear war between the United States and S oviet Union 8) Martin Luther King Jr.    A prominent civil rights leader during the civil rights movement. He wanted to abolish racism and implement peace throughout the United States through the use of civil disobedience. He wanted equality for all and eliminate all racial profiling an segregation 9) John Marshall    One of history’s most im  portant supreme court justices. In his infamous Marbury versus Madison case Marshall established what was known as judicial review. This helped the judicial branch of the American government to have as much power as the other two branches do. 10) Susan B. Anthony    One of American history’s most prominent and significant women’s right activist during the 19 th  century. She helped form the first Women’s Temperance movement. She greatly advocated for equality for women and acknowledgement of women’s equality in the government. She traveled throughout the United States every year giving inspiring speeches spreading the awareness of women’s rights. The 13 colonies won the war and gained independence. 2) Louisiana Purchase   With the purchase of the Louisiana Purchase from the French by 3 rd president Thomas Jefferson, the United States doubled in size which led to migrations 3) The Civil War   The bloodiest battle in American history, it was a fight between the  North and South states of America.
