ercise program. For more detailed exercise informa-tion, obtain a reputable book or consult your physician.

EXERCISE INTENSITY

Whether your goal is to burn fat or to strengthen yourcardiovascular system, the key to achieving the desired results is to exercise with the proper intensity. The proper intensity level can be found by using yourheart rate as a guide. The chart below shows recom-mended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exercise.

To find the proper heart rate for you, first find your agenear the bottom of the chart (ages are rounded off tothe nearest ten years). Next, find the three numbersabove your age. The three numbers define your “train-ing zone.” The lower two numbers are recommendedheart rates for fat burning; the higher number is therecommended heart rate for aerobic exercise.

Fat Burning

To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a relativelylow intensity level for a sustained period of time.During the first few minutes of exercise, your bodyuses easily accessible carbohydrate calories for en-

ergy. Only after the first few minutes does your bodybegin to use stored fat calories for energy. If your goalis to burn fat, adjust the speed and incline of the tread-mill until your heart rate is near the lowest number inyour training zone.

For maximum fat burning, adjust the speed and inclineof the treadmill until your heart rate is near the middlenumber in your training zone.

Aerobic Exercise

If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular sys-tem, your exercise must be “aerobic.” Aerobic exerciseis activity that requires large amounts of oxygen forprolonged periods of time. This increases the demandon the heart to pump blood to the muscles, and on thelungs to oxygenate the blood. For aerobic exercise, adjust the speed and incline of the treadmill until yourheart rate is near the highest number in your trainingzone.

WORKOUT GUIDELINES

Each workout should include the following three parts:

A Warm-up—Start each workout with 5 to 10 minutesof stretching and light exercise. A proper warm-up in-creases your body temperature, heart rate and circula-tion in preparation for exercise.

Training Zone Exercise—After warming up, increasethe intensity of your exercise until your pulse is in yourtraining zone for 20 to 60 minutes. (During the first fewweeks of your exercise program, do not keep yourpulse in your training zone for longer than 20 minutes.)Breathe regularly and deeply as you exercise—neverhold your breath.

A Cool-down—Finish each workout with 5 to 10 min-utes of stretching to cool down. This will increase theflexibility of your muscles and will help prevent post-ex-ercise problems.

EXERCISE FREQUENCY

To maintain or improve your condition, complete threeworkouts each week, with at least one day of rest be-tween workouts. After a few months, you may com-plete up to five workouts each week if desired. The keyto success is to make exercise a regular and enjoyablepart of your everyday life.

CONDITIONING GUIDELINES

WARNING: Before beginning thisor any exercise program, consult your physi-cian. This is especially important for individu-als over the age of 35 or individuals with pre-existing health problems.

The chest pulse sensor is not a medical de-vice. Various factors, including your move-ment, may affect the accuracy of heart ratereadings. The sensor is intended only as an ex-ercise aid in determining heart rate trends ingeneral.

WARNING: Before beginning this or any exercise program, consult your physician. Thisis especially important for persons over the age of 35 or persons with pre-existing health problems.Read all instructions before using. it is removed and the electrode areas are dried. Ifthe chest pulse sensor is not dried after each use, itmay remain activated longer than necessary, drain-ing the battery prematurely.

• Store the chest pulse sensor in a warm, dry place. Do not store the chest pulse sensor in a plastic bagor other container that may trap moisture.

• Do not expose the chest pulse sensor to direct sunlight for extended periods of time; do not exposeit to temperatures above 50° C (122° F) or below-10° C (14° F).

• Do not excessively bend or stretch the sensor unitwhen using or storing the chest pulse sensor.

• Clean the sensor unit using a damp cloth—neveruse alcohol, abrasives, or chemicals. The cheststrap may be hand washed and air dried.

CHEST PULSE SENSOR TROUBLE-SHOOTING

The instructions on the following pages explainhow the chest pulse sensor is used with the con-sole. If the chest pulse sensor does not functionproperly, try the steps below.

• Make sure that the chest pulse sensor is worn asdescribed at the left. Note: If the chest pulse sensordoes not function when positioned as described, trymoving it slightly lower or higher on your chest.

• Use saline solution such as saliva or contact lenssolution to wet the two electrode areas on thesensor unit. If heart rate readings do not appear untilyou begin perspiring, re-wet the electrode areas.

• As you walk or run on the treadmill, position your-self near the centre of the walking belt. For the console to display heart rate readings, the usermust be within arm’s length of the console.

• The chest pulse sensor is designed to work with people who have normal heart rhythms. Heart rate reading problems may be caused by medical conditions such as premature ventricular contrac-tions (pvcs), tachycardia bursts, and arrhythmia.

• The operation of the chest pulse sensor can be affected by magnetic interference caused by highpower lines or other sources. If it is suspected thatthis is a problem, try relocating the treadmill.

If your heart rate is not detected during the pro-gram, the speed and incline of the treadmill mayautomatically decrease until your heart rate is de-tected. If this happens, see CHEST PULSE SEN-SOR TROUBLE-SHOOTING on page 7.

If the speed or incline setting for the current seg-ment is too high or too low, you can adjust the set-ting with the Speed or Incline buttons. However, ifyou decrease the speed, the incline will automati-cally increase; if you increase the speed, the in-cline will decrease. If you increase the incline, thespeed will decrease; if you decrease the incline, the speed will increase. The treadmill will alwaysattempt to keep your heart rate near the targetheart rate setting for the current segment. Note:When the incline reaches the lowest setting, thespeed cannot be increased any further. When theincline reaches the highest setting, the speed can-not be decreased any further.

To stop the program at any time, press one of theStop buttons. Pulse programs should not bestopped temporarily and then restarted. To use apulse program again, reselect the program andstart it at the beginning.

Enter a maximum heart rate setting.

After you haveentered yourage, anothernumber willbegin to flash inthe Calories/

Watts/Pulse display. This number is the maximumheart rate setting for the program. If pulse pro-gram 1 is selected, the maximum heart rate set-ting can be from 65% to 85% of your maximumpossible heart rate (your maximum possible heartrate is 220 minus your age); if pulse program 2 isselected, the maximum heart rate setting can befrom 65% to 80% of your maximum possible heartrate. Note: Your maximum possible heart rate isan estimate only.

For example, if you are 30 years old, your maxi-mum possible heart rate is 190 (220 minus 30equals 190). Therefore, if Pulse program 1 is se-lected, the maximum heart rate setting can be from123 to 161 (65% of 190 is 123; 85% of 190 is 161).

A moment after the button is pressed, the tread-mill will automatically adjust to the first speed andincline settings for the program. Hold the handrailsand begin walking.

Each program is dividedinto several time seg-ments of differentlengths. The Time/Segment Time displaywill show both the timeremaining in the pro-gram and the time remaining in the current seg-ment. One target heart rate setting is programmedfor each segment. When only three seconds re-main in the first segment of the program, a seriesof tones will sound and the next segment willbegin. As you exercise, the speed and/or incline ofthe treadmill will automatically change as neededto keep your heart rate near the current targetheart rate setting.

The program will continue until the Time/SegmentTime display counts down to zero. The walkingbelt will then slow to a stop.
