1 Overview

DS-L3 Viewer is a microscope digital camera app for displaying and capturing live images from the Nikon DS-L3 DS

Camera Control Unit on an iPad.

This app has the following three main functions:

- Display live images

- Capture and save images on an iPad

- Display captured images saved on an iPad

Notes on focusing on specimens or moving the stage

Since images are transferred from DS-L3 to the iPad via wireless LAN, depending on communication status, the live image displayed on the iPad may pause.

When focusing on the specimen or moving the XY stage to change the position of the image to be captured, be sure to check the image on the DS-L3 monitor but not on the iPad.

If these operations are performed while checking the live image on the iPad, the tip of the objective may touch the specimen.

2 Required Items

iPad

3 Preparations

3.1 Preparations on the DS-L3

(1) Check the firmware version of the DS-L3

On the DS-L3, open the [SETUP MENU: MAIN] window, and check that the version number displayed in the lower left is

1.40 or later:

Example: “140.XXXX.XXXX.XXXXXX” (The first three numbers are the firmware version number. In this example, the

version is 1.40.)

Firmware Update

To use DS-L3 Viewer, the firmware must be version 1.40 or later. If the firmware version is older than 1.40, from a PC access the following link and download the latest firmware: http://www.nikon-instruments.jp/eng/service/download/DLTop.aspx Update the firmware following the procedure described in the included manual. If an IP address is not registered for the iPad in the [AUTHENTICATED IP ADDRESSES] area, register

one. If access restrictions via IP address are not required (ok to access from any IP address), specify

*.*.*.* for the IP address.

[AUTHENTICATED IP ADDRESSES] area settings

To set settings in the [AUTHENTICATED IP ADDRESSES] area, first it is necessary to select the [EDIT AUTH] button and then enter the password for accessing the DS-L3 internal server.

The [USER ID] and [PASSWORD] fields do not require setting. (User authentication is not performed

when the iPad connects to the DS-L3.)

3 Select the [SAVE] button.

2 Connect the DS-L3 to a wireless LAN router.

4 Operations in the Live Window

When DS-L3 Viewer starts up, the live window is displayed.

Operations are performed as follows:

Capture an image

Tap . An image file is saved on the iPad.

Image mode

If a live image is displayed in the DS-L3 monitor, the image mode

automatically switches to [FULL] when an image is captured.

If an image other than the live image (frozen image, played back

Display/hide the scale

Tap .

When the scale is displayed, a color can be selected. The scale’s position, length, and units cannot be changed (length and units are determined automatically). When an image is captured while the scale is displayed, the scale is included inthe image. Changing calibration settings

If the DS-L3 calibration settings are changed while the scale is displayed, the scale displayed on the iPad also changes. However, after settings are changed on the DS-L3, the changed scale may take time to display on the iPad.

Display images saved on the iPad

To display images saved on the iPad, swipe the live window from left to right. Saved images can be copied to the Photo Library or attached to emails etc. as required.
