Dear Gardeners,

Gardening has become fashionable again - whether you call it urban gardening, guerrilla gardening or just pottering. Many people are discovering gardening again andwant to grow their own fruit and vegetables. We are very happy to see this, becausenatural gardening is a topic very close to our hearts – and has been for decades.

We started to develop environmentally friendly gardening products when ecologywasn’t recognised as an important issue. Founded in 1854 in what used to be Prussia,Neudorff was one of the first companies to manufacture plant care and protectionproducts. In 1959 my grandfather, Rudolf Lohmann, bought the company and broughtit to Emmerthal in Lower Saxony.

From the beginning, our aim has been to minimise our impact on the environment.Wherever feasible we use only the most sustainable raw materials and active ingre-dients sourced from nature, which interfere as little as possible with our fragile eco-system. This requires significant investment from us, as the development of a new plantprotection product takes approximately 10 years. As a result we are already workingon products that you will find in shops in 2023.

During the manufacture of our products we try to use as little energy and as few resources as possible. These priorities are reflected in our solar and hydroelectricpower stations which we use to power our offices and production facilities, and also in many other measures we take to promote sustainability. We are proud to say thatour Energy Management and Environmental Management systems have recently been certified according to the international standards ISO 50001 and ISO 14001.

Please help protect our environment. By maintaining the natural cycle, for example, allowing fallen leaves and branches to create natural retreats for wildlife, you can encourage garden dwellers such as beneficial insects, birds and hedgehogs into yourgarden. In this GardenGuide, you will find many suggestions on how to make your garden a green paradise on your doorstep.

Together with my team, I wish you a fruitful gardening year in which you can enjoy a natural garden full of life!

Yours

Neudorff fertilisers are specialBy caring for your plants with Neudorff fertilisers you are provi-ding them with something specialfor the following reasons:• The fertilisers are organic• They are manufactured from

natural raw materials• They contain Mycorrhiza Fungi

and microorganisms to vitalisethe soil (see right)

• They take effect immediately andremain active for several weeks

• They increase humus content in the soil

• They are completely safe for humans, animals and the environment

Organic fertilisers do good thingsWe only use organic raw materialsin our fertilisers which means theyare completely free of mineralsalts. This means that when usedproperly it is impossible to burnleaves and the risk of nutrients leaching is extremely low.

Specific fertilisers for specific plantsDifferent plants have different needs. Roses, for example, need phospho-rous to produce flowers whereas tomatoes and other types of vegetablerequire plenty of potassium in order for the fruit to develop full flavourand yield. And for this reason, there are specific fertilisers such as OrganicRose & Shrub Food and Organic Tomato & Vegetable Food. The nutrients in these fertilisers are specifically formulated to meet the needs of different plants.

This is due to the nutrients contai-ned in the fertilisers being optimi-sed into a usable form by selectedmicroorganisms that have beenadded to the products. “Thosewho use organic fertilisers auto-matically provide their plants witheverything they need”, says BirgitSchäfer, experimental engineer forfertilisers and soil. “When it is coldand dry, plants do not grow verymuch, therefore only small quantitiesof nutrients are activated.’’ Conversely, when the weather ishot and humid, the microorganismswork rapidly and provide a highlevel of nutrients for the plants.

By doing this, the microorganismsautomatically ensure that the plantsalways receive just the right amountof nutrients that they need. Toquote Schäfer “The microorganismsalso ensure that a diverse range oflife settles in the soil. This counteractsan unequal spread of pathogens inthe soil as well as soil fatigue.’’

Improved plant growth through Mycorrhiza FungiWe mix a blend of various benefi-cial Mycorrhiza Fungi and micro-organisms into all our special fertili-sers. As a result your plants growmore evenly and are able to bettersurvive periods of drought or frost.“Our Mycorrhiza is composed of differ ent beneficial fungi that naturally occur in the soil”, says Dr. Hans-Joachim Noll, microbiologist at Neudorff. “Theylive in a symbiosis with the plantroots. Which is to say, they pene-trate the tips of the roots but donot harm them in any way. They receive sugar from the plants whichthe plants do not need and in returnsupply them with nutrients and water. This results in the plants being lessvulnerable to drought because this‘glove’ provides a better supply.”

Plants, like humans and animals, require food for healthydevelopment. In the natural world, the organic cycle

makes sure that there are always plenty of nutrients avail-able. This is because leaves and other organic material rotdown and are converted into plant nutrients. However, when dead plants are cleared out of the garden, the naturalcycle is interrupted which is why we must restore the natural balance.

Food for a sea of flowersRoses need sufficient nutrients toenable them to produce an abun-dance of flowers. We have deve- loped the Organic Rose & ShrubFood in our research department(see Page 30). It features the following properties:• Contains all essential main and

trace elements• Is organic, therefore also per-

mitted for eco-cultivation**

• Contains only natural raw materials

• Is enriched with microorganismsto activate the soil

• Contains Mycorrhiza Fungi (see Page 5) for improved stresstolerance

• Provides natural long-lasting effectsIn particular, the microorganisms itcontains are an important featurefor roses. They prevent the dreadedsoil fatigue, this phenomenon canoccur when plants have been stand -ing in the same location for toolong. It manifests itself through aslowdown in the plant's growth andits flowering abilities.

For potted roses, Neudorff recom-mends its new liquid Organic RoseFeed. It is made from 100% vegeta-ble ingredients and can even beused in Seramis cultures.

Natural protection from pestsThere are many different kinds ofpest that appear on roses. Aphidsand spider mites are just as likely tobe found on them as leaf hoppersand thrips. With Pyrol Bug & LarvaeKiller for Roses*, roses and other ornamental plants can be protectedfrom these and other pests.

Pyrol Bug & Larvae Killer for Roses*

contains the active ingredient natu-ral pyrethrum derived from the flower of the chrysanthemum which is character ised by a particularly effective and immediate action. Thanks to the unique formulationof Pyrol Bug & Larvae Killer for Roses*,it also acts on the eggs of pests, thereby ensuring a long-lasting effect.

There are very few gardens that do not have roses. Old varieties, floribunda, ramblers, English roses - the

variety of shape and colour is practically never ending. It is true to say they are considered sensitive and susceptible to disease, but they also have many friends and rightly so.Giving them the correct care right from the onset is thebest way of preventing diseases. This starts by finding theright planting site.

Roses feel at home hereRoses are sun worshippers – but can suffer from heat stress so placing directly in front of a south-facing wall is too hot for them. They like tohave a slight breeze around them which allows the leaves to dry outmore quickly following exposure to rain so that fungal diseases are notable to spread as easily. The soil should be deep as rose roots go particularly deep into the ground.

Slugs and snails love thisSlugs and snails love to come outin the rain. Reinhard Arndt, head ofour experimental garden, knowswhy: “Slugs and snails have to con-sume lots of water in order toproduce the slime which helpsthem to move. This explains whythey mainly appear when there islots of moisture around as thenthere is no danger of them dryingout. In developing the Sluggo® Slug& Snail Killer* we made sure thatthe pellets are able to absorbplenty of water so that they willappear particularly attractive.”

Prevent slugs and snailsWith a few simple measures, it ispossible to reduce the annoyingplague of slugs and snails. These include:• Only watering plants in the

morning • Where possible, placing slug

barriers around plants• Keep breaking up the soil so

that the slugs’ hiding places are destroyed

• Using plants that slugs and snails don't like the taste of such as aquilegia, saxifrage, monkshood, sedum, lady's mantle, campanula, nasturtium

These slimy visitors come mostly under cover of dark-ness. They descend on newly planted lettuce with a

vengeance but their favourite foods also include strawberries, hostas and dahlias. Usually there isn't much left in the mor-ning, only their slimy trails show who was responsible. By providing shelter to hedgehogs and shrews in the gardenyou can help reduce the scourge but additional help is required in the fight to save produce and flowers.

Greedynight feeders

Effective control for slugs and snailsSpread Sluggo® Slug & Snail Killer* at the first sign of any slug or snail infes-tation. During a mild spring, this can occur as early as March when theslugs and snails start eating the leaves of tulips and other bulb floweringplants from below the surface of the soil. It is very important to makesure Sluggo® Slug & Snail Killer* is liberally spread across the entire flowerbed. It is not enough to just spread it in a circle around the plants as oncea few granules are eaten this would allow the slugs and snails a gapthrough which to crawl.

No visible dead slugs andsnails – with Sluggo® Slug &Snail Killer*

Sluggo® Slug & Snail Killer* containsferric phosphate, an active ingredientwhich also occurs in nature. “Oncethe slugs and snails have ingestedSluggo® Slug & Snail Killer* they stopeating”, says Reinhard Arndt, experi-mental engineer for the develop-ment of pesticides. “Sluggo® Slug &Snail Killer* causes the slugs andsnails to creep back into their hidingplaces in the ground to die. Whichmeans that the slime trail that slugsand snails are so well known fordoes not occur.

The dead slugs and snails are nolonger visible as they die in theground and quickly decompose.”Sluggo® Slug & Snail Killer* poses nothreat to birds, hedgehogs, earth-worms, pets, bees and other usefulinsects. It contains ferric (iron)phosphate which occurs naturallyin the environment. Excess pelletsbiodegrade into iron and phosphate, enriching the soil around your plants.

What you need to know A lot of lawn problems, such asclover and lawn thatch, disappearpractically by themselves if youtake good care of your lawn. Wewill show you how, without the use of chemicals, you can encour-age a healthy weed-free lawn.

Fertilise organicallyYou determine the way in whichyour lawn grows through yourchoice of fertiliser. The sole purposeof some fertilisers is to ensure thatthe grass shoots up - which then requires frequent mowing. Nobody finds this desirable, which is why we have developed our Organic Lawn Feed & Improverwhich limits the height of lawn growth and increases the width

of each blade of grass. Your lawnbecomes much thicker but this isnot everything that Organic LawnFeed & Improver has to offer :• It is organic and made from

natural raw materials• It contains all main nutrients

and many trace elements• It has both an immediate and

long-term effect

There is more to a lawn than merely being a decorativefeature in the garden. It should be a lush green colour,

beautifully thick and hard wearing and an inviting place forfun, play and relaxation. Neudorff's natural lawn care meetsthe lawn's special needs so that you too can obtain yourdream lawn with very little effort.

Green, thick, lush,attractive

• It contains Mycorrhiza Fungi which improves drought resistance

• It contains additional micro-organisms which revitalise the soil providing optimal growth conditions and rapidly breaking down lawn thatch

• Children and pets can go onto the lawn immediately after applying the fertiliser

• A thick lawn suppresses moss and weeds

Spread the Organic Lawn Feed &Improver in March/April and againin September/October in order tomake the lawn more winter resis-tant and less sensitive to frost.

An additional bonus - MyccoVitalLike all the solid fertilisers in theNeudorff range, the Organic LawnFeed & Improver contains Mycorrhiza

Keep cats away -the natural way

Cats number amongst our favouritepets, but they still should not be allo-wed to roam freely and leave theirmarks behind.Cats love open, crumbly soil whichquickly warms up and in which theycan scratch around, bask and doze. However, they then often leave behind mess which we are not sohappy to find. Cats also love crossingproperty that is really “dog territory”,often lead ing to wild chases. Bird lo-vers view them as a threat to birdsand their ca t erwauling is unpleasantand annoying. These are just some of the reasonscats are not always welcome. Cats arenotoriously persistent and it isn'tenough to just simply shoo themaway, which is why Neudorff have de-veloped Super Strength Cat Repellentwhich has several benefits.

Fungi (see Page 4). This enables thelawn's roots to reach and absorbadditional water and nutrients inthe soil. Because the surface areaof the root is greatly increased bythe mycorrhizal fungi, during a dry period the roots are still able to absorb water whereas in lawns without Mycorrhiza, the roots willhave long been suffering from theeffects of drought.

It acts on the basis of pure, plantbased fragrances which are bound inclay based mineral granules. Cats findthe smell unpleasant and it thereforeeffectively drives them away withoutdoing them any harm. The scent that cats useto mark their territoryis also masked by theSuper Strength Cat Repellent. The granulesare simply spreadaround the area to be protected and thisprotection lasts forthree to four weeksdepending on the weather.

Hints

Pruning fruit treesDon't worry, we don't know of a singleinstance where a tree has died becauseit's been pruned incorrectly, so you canpick up your pruning shears or sawwith a stout heart. There are many reasons for pruning:• Pruning brings light into the canopy

of a tree or into the interior of abush. It is only by doing this that thesun is able to reach the fruit andmake it achieve full flavour

• The crowns of trees that have beenpruned are airier and foliage dries faster, so that fungal diseases whichrely on moisture do not occur to thesame extent

• Old fruit wood is removed so thatthere is space for new, high yield fruit wood

• Correctly pruned trees are more stable and healthy, branches are less likely to break during storms

A few hints for pruning:• Make sure your tools are sharp.

The smoother the cut, the better the wound will heal

• Don't leave short stumps, always cutup to the main branch. Short stubsleft behind are an entry point for infections

• Do not prune in frost otherwise the branches are likely to break offquickly. The best time for pruningmost fruit trees is in March, just be-fore growth begins. Only cherry andberry bushes should be pruned in the summer

12

Grow tomatoes –the easy way!Don't worry, a vegetable bed doesn't need that much work and there isn't a lot that you cando wrong! Here are a few easysteps to your own tomatoes:1. Break up the soil2. After a few dry days, rake the

soil, break up rough clumps of earth

3. Don't forget canes and ties for securing the plants

4. Use Organic Tomato & Vegetable Food during planting

5. Water in6. Water regularly and snap off side

shoots. There should be just one strong shoot growing upwards

7. Feed with Organic Tomato & Vegetable Food again in July

8. Harvest!!

Crisp, fresh lettuce –no problemIt couldn't be easier. You only needbreak up the soil with a cultivator ora hoe, place the seedlings you havebought into the ground, mix a littleOrganic Multipurpose Plant Food intothe soil and water in – done! If theplants are not planted too deeplyyou will be able to keep bottom rotat bay. Distance between each plantshould be around 25 cm. Hoe occa-sionally, water when dry – that's it!

The best soil brings in the best harvestLoose, humus rich soil with sufficientclay content is best for the vegetablepatch. Not everybody has such a soilbut there is still a lot you can do toimprove yours. Every soil benefitsfrom mulching compost from theThermal Compost Bin ”Neudorff Duo Therm®“ 530 L (see Page 14). A special soil testing kit, availablecheaply from a specialist retailer, canbe used directly on-site to test whet-her your garden soil is too acidic. If necessary, add lime to the soil. Then, provide a good supply of nutrients by using our universal fertiliser - Organic Multipurpose PlantFood. All the essential elements willnow be in place for you to get thevery best from your plants.

How to hoodwink pestsThe caterpillars of the Winter Mothcan cause serious damage towoody plants in the garden. In thespring they feed on the leaves ofboth fruit trees and ornamentaltrees. By placing a Neudorff Grease-band around the trunk in Septem-ber, heavy infestation can beprevented. The females that crawlup the trunk in order to lay theireggs in the autumn become trap-ped on the sticky glue and withouteggs, there are no hungry cater-pillars the following spring.Greasebands are also good in tack-ling ants. Ants help aphids and evenkill beneficial insects so that theycan feed on the sweet honeydewof the aphids. Fortunately they alsostick to the Greaseband.Neudorff's Greaseband is coatedwith a special glue which neitherdries out nor can be washed off. As the green colour appears uninteresting to beneficial insectssuch as ladybirds and hover flies, these garden helpers are not harmed in any way. There is no insecticide in the glue, naturally, so by using the Grease-band a variety of pests can be controlled in a natural way.

Tasty tomatoes, crisp apples, sweet tasting carrots –the freshest way to harvest fruit and vegetables is from

your own garden. Down with boring conifers and bushes! And who needs such a large lawn area? Create a fruit andvegetable bed in your garden and be amazed just how littleeffort is really needed, and how much fun it is to watchyour plants grow.

Fast or slow composting? You have two options. Fast composting in the Thermal Compost Binwill lead to nutrient-rich mulching compost within a short space of time. The structure of the starting materials are still recog-nisable as they are not yet completely decomposed. Or the conventional method of slow composting on a compost heap which takes two to three years and produces compost soil which has fewer nutrients.

How to compost easily and quickly• Shred organic material• Mix moist waste such as grass

clippings with dry material suchas bark mulch

• Activate with Organic CompostAccelerator

• After around four weeks, mixthoroughly so that sufficient oxygen may reach the material

Useful aid for fast compostingThe most important tool is theThermal Compost Bin. It has a 530 L capacity and the following features: • Insulated, double walled

construction, including the lids• An access flap at ground level• Easy assembly and dismantling• Extra sturdy and weatherproof• Made from recycled plastic

How can you obtain a nutrient-rich soil improver forthe garden and get rid of waste at the same time?

By fast composting in the Thermal Compost Bin “Neudorff DuoTherm®” 530 L. In record time, perennialcuttings, leaves and kitchen waste rot down into nutritiousmulching compost. When you spread this on your beds, beneath shrubs and hedges, you will be amazed with the results!

Natural, living,nutrient-rich

"Recipe"

Grass clippings• Leave to wilt for a few days• Mix with dry shredded material,

leaves or bark mulch at a ratio of 2:1• Place in the Thermal Compost Bin• Activate with Organic Compost

Accelerator• Mix thoroughly after approx. 3 weeks

Kitchen waste• Only use uncooked waste other-

wise you will be inviting vermin• If possible, add compost worms• Continue topping up with waste

regularly

Autumn leaves in the composter

• Shred the leaves together with thelast grass cuttings of the year

• Place in the Thermal Compost Bin• Activate with Organic Compost

Accelerator• Mix thoroughly after approx. 3 weeks

Autumn leaves on the bed

• Spread the leaves across the beds in a 10 - 15 cm thick layer

• Spread Organic Compost Accelerator on top

• It will have decomposed by the spring

Turbo starter for compostingUsing Organic Compost Acceleratorboosts the composting processparticularly effectively because thecompost starter contains a widevariety of microorganisms, com-post bacteria and fungal cultures.Added organic nutrients serve asan easily digestible breedingground for microorganisms so thatthey are able to multiply more easilyand can quickly decompose organicwaste. Simply add Organic CompostAccelerator to the material everytime you fill your composter.

This is what you get with fast compostingThe advantage of composting inthe Thermal Compost Bin is not justthe much faster rotting processthan in an open heap. It also resultsin a coarse mulching materialwhich is excellent for breaking upyour garden soil and supplying yourplants with additional nutrients.Mulching compost enriches yourgarden soil with plenty of humus. This makes heavy loam and claysoils looser and light sandy soilsare able to store water and nutrients better thanks to the additional humus. There is no better soil improver than mulchingcompost you have made yourself!

Control weeds

Weeds are plants which grow at the wrong time inthe wrong place. This can apply just as much to

tomatoes in the perennial border as daisies in the vegetablegarden or dandelions on the path. The most environmen-tally friendly way to tackle weeds is by hoeing. Though insome places – for example beneath hedges – this isn't always easy. This is where the biodegradable Weedkillerproducts by Neudorff can help.

* Use plant protection products safely. Always read the label and product information before use.

Prevent spread of weeds You will almost certainly not beable to prevent weed seeds landingon your property. But we can stilloffer you a few hints for prevention: • Bare soil is an invitation for

weeds to spread themselves. For example, if you have densely planted your perennial border orcovered it with mulching compost from the Thermal Com-post Bin ”Neudorff Duo Therm®“530 L, weeds will have less opportunity to spread

• Nowadays, there are also mulchmats that you can place betweenthe plants

• Hoe on a regular basis beforeweed seeds can take hold

Why use weedkiller? Quite simply, there are some areaswhere it is very difficult to combatweeds by hand such as under shal-low-rooted shrubs and trees andparticularly on garden paths. Theseare areas ideally suited for tacklingweeds by means such as OrganicFast Acting Weedkiller* or Superfast& Long Lasting Weedkiller* whichboth contain a natural active ingredient.

rennials with which they come intocontact. You only need to wait twodays after application before plantingin the same spot again.

Positive environmental propertiesOrganic Fast Acting Weedkiller* andOrganic Moss & Algae Killer* providethe following benefits:• They are low risk to beneficial

insects such as bees and lady-birds

• Children and pets are able to goonto the treated areas again assoon as they are dry

Organic Fast Acting Weedkiller* doesnot possess a long-term effectagainst weeds, i.e. regrowth mayoccur. Therefore, repeated applications may be applied at 2-4week intervals. Mosses and algae onpaths and on open areas aroundtrees will usually be controlled by asingle application but repeat appli-cation may be applied at 3-4 weekintervals if complete control is not achieved or following regrowth.

No more slippery moss on garden paths It does not take long for algae andmoss to cause a green coating toappear on any surface permanentlyexposed to the elements. There isnow an effective remedy to counter-act this problem. Neudorff ’sOrganic Moss & Algae Killer*

removes moss and algae aroundtrees, woody ornamental plantsand from gravel paths. After treat-ment the path will be free ofslippery and unattractive greencoatings. This product is extremelyfast acting, even at low temperatu-res, and the effects are long-lasting.The active ingredient leaves nobrown rust spots behind and oncethe application is dry it is safe forchildren, dogs and cats to be allowedback into the treated area.

An active ingredient which isfound naturallyAll Neudorff Weedkillers* contain theactive ingredient pelargonic acidwhich is a naturally occurring com-pound that can be found in geraniums. It is a long chain fatty acid possessingparticularly good environmental pro-perties. When the products are ap-plied to plants, the active substancepenetrates the wax layer of the leaves and destroys the walls of theouter plant cells. A rapid release ofcell contents then occurs and thegreen parts of the plant dehydratewithin a few hours. The woody bark of the plant is un-affected as the cells are too stableand the active ingredient has no wayof penetrating the surface. Therefore,Neudorff ’sWeedkillers* can be usedunder hedges, trees and bushes without fear of destroying the wholearea. As Neudorff ’sWeedkillers* act on allgreen sections of the plant they mustnot be used on the lawn as they willkill the grass and damage any pe-

Weeds have different mechanisms from cultivatedplants for establishing themselves. Some of them

produce thousands of seeds per flower, others have avery extensive root system. The latter group includes so-called problem weeds like field horsetail, which formmetre long roots or underground “rhizomes” whichspring from the main root. A new plant can sprout fromevery small piece of rhizome that remains in the ground.

Effective even against tough weeds - with immediate and long-lasting effectsYou can see the results quickly - within one day after treatment! Super-fast & Long Lasting Weedkiller* is effective even at lower temperatures. Therefore it can be used from early spring until late autumn ensuringprotection during the entire growth cycle of weeds.Superfast & Long Lasting Weedkiller* also contains natural pelargonicacid which destroys the cell walls in the leaves. The leaves dry out in a few hours when the weather is sunny and look as though they havebeen burnt. Also, it contains Maleic hydrazide, a growth regulator, which is trans-ported by the plant's vascular tissue into the plant. It is known to prevent cell division and therefore growth. The main applications of the growth regulator have been in the production of food, particularly on potatoes and onions as an anti-sprouting agent.

Easy to useSuperfast & Long Lasting Weedkiller*

is available as a concentrate and ina ready to use spray bottle fortreating smaller areas. Simply dilutethe concentrate in water and spraythe plants until dripping wet. Onlythose sections of the plant thatyou treat will die. The leaves shouldbe dry when being treated other-wise the plants are not able to absorb the active ingredient as effectively. With problem weedssuch as ground elder and field hor-setail, you should repeat the appli-cation around four to six weekslater.

Ground elder, in particular, shouldbe at least 10 cm when treated so that there is the largest possibleleaf surface available in order forSuperfast & Long Lasting Weedkiller*

to be absorbed and to act optimally.

Naturally effectiveNeudorff ’s Superfast & Long LastingWeedkiller* works against a widevariety of annual and perennialweeds and is also effective againststubborn weeds, moss and algae.

The soil is the be all and end allFor your plants, buy the very bestpotting soil you can afford. After all, what is the point of having themost glorious young plants if be-cause of the bad soil they don'thave the chance to develop splen-did blooms? Do something goodfor your plants and use a high qua-lity potting soil. A really good pot-ting soil should:• not shrink or cave in on itself• be able to be repeatedly wetted

even after a long drought• be able to absorb water and

nutrients to an equal extent andalso release these to the plants

• already contain fertiliser• be composed of rapidly

renewable raw materials and therefore peat free

Solid or liquid – it should bepurely organicPatio plants look wonderful in narrow containers. However, incontrast to their natural habitatoutdoors, they only have a fractionof the soil volume available fortheir roots so nutrients in theearth are quickly used up. By caringfor them with an organic feed, yourplants will have everything theyneed to provide a beautiful displayall summer long.

The organic feed is available in different forms:• The liquid feeds, such as the

Organic Multipurpose Plant Feed,Organic Tomato Feed and OrganicRose Feed can simply be addedto the watering can. They are 100% of plant origin and are therefore madefrom quickly renewable resources

Pest control on the patio is not a problemIn tackling aphids, you can use anactive ingredient from nature withPyrol Bug & Larvae Killer*. It is avai-l able as a concentrate and also as aready to use spray. The active in-gredient rapidly degrades throughlight and air.

Adazzling display of colours and shapes on the patio is a magnificent sight to see. Or do you prefer every-

thing matching in similar shades? The abundance of varietiesand species for the patio is simply enormous which meansyou are spoilt for choice. It is a great source of pleasure tosee plants compete with one another in the flowering stakes. We can show you how to achieve this colourful paradise.

Pesky antsAnts in or around the house can betruly unpleasant. But don't worry, wehave a few highly effective aids for you: • Refillable Ant Bait Station#:

This refillable bait trap contains thenatural active ingredient spinosadwhich the ants collect and feed to thebrood and queen thereby wiping outthe whole population. Suitable for in-doors and also outdoors on terraces, balconies and on patios.

• Ant Killer Granules #: The granules contain the naturalactive ingredient pyrethrum. This product can be sprinkled or dissolvedin water and poured through a wate-ring can. Used on hard surfaces likepaving stones, the product penetratesinto the nest and eradicates the en-tire colony

23 * Use plant protection products safely. Always read the label and product information before use. # Use biocides responsibly. Always read the label and product information sheet before use.

• Solid fertilisers such as the Or ganicFlowering Plant Food, can be useddirectly without dissolving beforehand. If the soil is dry, it isadvisable to water after applyingthe fertiliser so that it can bebetter introduced into the soil andto activate the microorganisms

Plants that have been fed withNeudorff's organic feeds are lesssusceptible to many diseases because they are provided witheverything they need for healthygrowth. This makes them the per-fect feeds for all plants in pots, tubsand baskets.

Hints

Care of orchidsOrchids are perfect for lazy plant-owners as their needs are very modest:

• Hold the plant in the washbasinabout once a week and thoroughlysoak with luke-warm water until thewater runs out of the pot. When ithas finished dripping, replace in its position

• Feed once a month during the grow -ing phase with liquid Organic OrchidFeed. This organic feed is particularlylow in salts and is therefore ideal forsalt sensitive roots

• Spray every two to four weeks withNeudorff's Orchid Vitaliser. The plantmaterial it contains promotes healthygrowth and flower formation. This orchid care also improves the micro-climate around the orchid by increa-sing humidity

24

Repotting houseplants correctlyWhen roots are growing out ofthe pot, then your plants need abigger pot and fresh soil. Onlyrepot from March to Septemberwhen your plants are in their growing phase. The new potshould be about 3 cm bigger indiameter than the old one. Here's how to go about it:• Carefully loosen the plant roots,

shake off old soil• Remove wilted plant sections• Cover the drainage hole in the

new pot with clay fragments• Fill with a small amount of soil so

that the plant is seated as deeplyas before

• Put in the plant • Fill with soil, pressing down lightly• Water thoroughlyBe sure to use high quality soil.Roots can only grow stronglywhen they have perfect conditions.

Exotic beauties - OrchidsIn their natural habitat many spe-cies of orchid grow as so-called “air plants” (epiphytes) in forkedbranches and tree canopies. Thetree only holds them, their rootsdo not penetrate the trunk. Theyfeed themselves from the thinhumus layer on the trees. This li-festyle of tropical orchids explainstheir special requirements. Withtheir roots they take in the waterthey need to grow from the air. Itis essential, of course, that they arenot placed in normal potting soil. A good orchid soil has a breath -able, solid structure to it. It onlydecomposes slowly, therefore pro-viding the orchid roots with an airyyet solid substrate in which it canquickly dry off and not rot.If green fingers aren't enough

If despite taking the best care ofyour houseplants, pests take hold, you can tackle them in a complete lyenvironmentally friendly way. Use Plant Flycatchers to catch flying pests such as whiteflies, fungus gnats or winged greenflies. The insects are attracted to thespecial yellow colour and stick tothe insecticide free sticky surface.

Or use Pyrol Bug & Larvae Killer*,effective against most houseplantpests. It contains natural pyrethrumderived from the flower of thechrysanthemum, an active ingre-dient that comes from rapidly renew-able natural sources. Pyrol Bug &Larvae Killer* is very well toler atedby plants.

Green ivy winding down from a shelf, a lush fern cheering up a dark corner or an extravagant orchid

bringing an exotic flair into the house – plants introduce colour and truly make rooms come alive. With the right location and the right care, you will have many years of enjoyment with your plants.

Decorative

Perfect habitat for orchidsThere are as many shapes and col ours to different orchids asthere are habitat requirements. Orchids love light but not directsunlight. Make sure that there is ahigh level of humidity, particularlyduring the heating period. For allspecies, it is important that thetemperature at night is lower thanduring the day as this fluctuationencourages the formation of flowers. If night temperatures are too highthen some varieties produce accordion-like folded leaves.

* Use plant protection products safely. Always read the label and product information before use.

tions from amateur gardeners all year round. Many questionscome back time and again because their answers are impor-tant for work in the garden or on the patio. You can find themost important questions here.

The horticultural engineers, Sabine Aulich, Kristin Germeyerand Anasthasia Wagner answer numerous technical ques-

LawnsI don't feed my lawn so that Idon't have to mow it as often. However, weeds have nowstarted spreading. If you don't feed your lawn at all youare weakening it. Weeds, however, are much more able to spread andcrowd out the lawn grasses. WithNeudorff's Organic Lawn Feed &Improver it is primarily thickness thatis improved rather than height whichmeans it becomes beautifully lushwithout you having to mow as much.

Do I have to spread the fertiliserwith a fertiliser spreader? No, that isn't really necessary thoughthe lawn will grow more evenly usingone than if you spread the fertiliserby hand.

Can my pet go onto the lawnagain after I've fertilised withOrganic Lawn Feed & Improver?Yes, your animal can use the areaagain straight away. Organic LawnFeed & Improver contains no sub-stances harmful to animals.

What should I do with my grassclippings?Large amounts of grass clippings gomouldy in the Thermal Compost Bin.To avoid this let the blades dry out alittle bit beforehand and always mixdry material such as fine bark mulchwith grass clippings. Don't forget tospeed up the composting processwith Organic Compost Accelerator.

Slugs and snailsCan I spread Sluggo Slug andSnail Killer* again just before picking lettuce?Yes, it may be applied and you do notneed to wait before picking lettuce.

What can I do to prevent slugsand snails? Only water in the mornings and sur-round particularly vulnerable bedswith a slug and snail barrier. Frequentlybreak up the soil so that the slug's hi-ding places are destroyed. Encourage hedgehogs and other be-neficial creatures with piles of brush -wood which act as a hiding place.

Do other animals eat Sluggo Slug& Snail Killer*?It is possible that mice or even birdseat Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer*. ButSluggo Slug & Snail Killer* doesn't harmthese animals, the same also applies tohedgehogs, earthworms and pets .

WeedsCan I also use Superfast & LongLasting Weedkiller* with verysmall weeds?Yes, it can be used on all sizes ofweed. But the effect is better whenthe green surface area of the weedis larger so that the maximumamount of active ingredient can penetrate the leaves and reach theroots.

Will the Superfast & Long Las-ting Weedkiller* products also da-mage my shrubs? All Neudorff Weedkiller* productsare broad-spectrum herbicides.Which means that everything that

has green leaves and is touched by itwill die. It is best to use a spray ca-nopy in the perennial border whichwill make sure that your shrubs donot come into contact with thespray mist.

Can I also use Superfast & LongLasting Weedkiller* on the lawn? No, because Superfast & Long Las-ting Weedkiller* acts on all greenplants and will therefore kill the lawn.

products Environmentally friendly

During product development, wherever possible, we use activesubstances that also occur in nature. For example the Iron-III

phosphate in Sluggo® Slug and Snail Killer#. Furthermore, we pre-fer to use local raw materials which are quick to regenerate. We testour products extensively in our experimental garden under fieldconditions before we bring them into the marketplace. You can finda complete list of products at www.neudorff.co.uk.

Organic fertilisersAll our organic fertilisers are composed of natural rawmaterials. They have both an immediate and a long-termeffect. In addition to essential main and trace elements, our solid fertilisers also contain natural Mycorrhiza Fungiand microorganisms. This enables roots to reach and absorb the water and nutrients in the soil better. This isparticularly noticeable during dry periods when theplants need to be watered less. The composition of nu-trients in the organic feeds are tailored to the particularplant species’ needs. Once applied Neudorff fertilisersare completely safe for both people and animals.

Biodegradable methods to control insects, slugs and snailsBiodegradable pesticides reliably protect your plants from pestsand ensure a bountiful harvest and splendid show of flowers. The active ingredients are also to be found naturally. These in-clude Iron-III phosphate in the Sluggo® Slug and Snail Killer# as well as natural pyrethrum in the Pyrol Bug & Larvae Killer#.Microorganisms in the soil quickly break these actives down, ensuring they pose no harm to useful garden dwellers such as hedgehogs, earthworms and bees.

Natural ant controlAnts in the house and on the patio are a nuisance andsometimes even harmful. We have a wide range of pro-ducts available for ant control, for pouring, sprinkling oras a refillable bait box depending on your requirements.Of course, the active sub-stance s are all to be found innature. The Refillable Ant BaitStation* is particularly long-lasting as the active ingre-dient is fed to the brood andqueen of the ant colony the-reby eradicating the entire population. For outdoor use,we have Ant Killer Granules*.

Weed and moss control with a naturally occuringactive ingredientNeudorff's biodegradable Weedkiller products# combatmoss and weeds. They take effect within hours. Superfast& Long Last ing Weedkiller# contains a growth regulatorwhich results in an immediate and long-term effect onthe roots. You can even control problem weeds such asground-elder and field horsetail. Thanks to the activesubstances, dogs and cats are able to go back onto thetreated area as soon as the application is dry. The weedkiller products are naturally biodegradable (according to OECD 301F).

Natural compostingMake your own mulching compost by recycling your organicwaste in your garden. This will save you journeys to the wastedisposable center and give you a compost with the nutrientsthat will transform your garden into a green paradise. The organic material breaks down in the Thermal Compost Bin ”Neudorff Duo Therm®“ 530 L extremely quickly thanks to thehigh temperatures obtained within its double walled con-struction which stores the heat generated by the decomposi-tion. With the addition of Organic Compost Accelerator, micro-organisms responsible for converting the nutrients multiply in a short space of time. This additive is also extremely suitablefor composting autumn leaves outside of the compost bin.
