Issue 109 June 2015
Good News!!
The Playground Action Group are extremely pleased to announce that the
grants requested by NMPC on PAG’s behalf have been confirmed. WREN
has contributed £25,000 and SODC £10,000 and we are very grateful to
both of them for their support.
PAG would also like to thank Cllr. Patrick Greene for the contribution from
his Communities Fund, North Moreton Charitable Trust, NMPC and the
Prescotts for their donations and, of course, everyone who supported our
fund-raising events. This money has enabled us to meet the match fund-
ing required by WREN and to provide some extra items for the Trim Trail.
An order has now been placed with Playline Design for the new equip-
ment and installation is due to commence on 14th September 2015. We
will hopefully have a splendid new playground in operation sometime in
early October.
Before that we still have a fundraising event in the diary, which we hope
will be well supported: the very popular Circus Berzercus will be return-
ing to the Barn at North Moreton House on Sunday 13th September with
‘Funny Business’, a second instalment of "comedy and chaos, fun for all
the family". Prices stay as last year, adults £10, children 3 and over £7
(includes tea after the show) and under 3s free of charge. Tickets are now
available through Nora at [email protected]. More infor-
mation to follow, but please book early as last year was a complete sell-
out.

North Moreton Parish Council
Parish Council Elections At the election held on 7 May the following councillors were elected for a
four-year term: Veronica Gibbs, Sue Harrison, Ian Shipton, David Tebworth
and Ros Templeman. The councillors would like to thank parishioners for
their support and extend special thanks to Doreen and Amanda, the Return-
ing Officer and Poll Clerk, whose friendly and cheerful approach turned our
visits to the Polling Station from a duty to a pleasure.
Roger Haycock
After sixteen years on the Parish Council, nine of them as Chairman, Roger
Haycock retired in May. As most people in North Moreton will know, Rog-
er's contribution to village life over these years has been invaluable, not on-
ly in carrying out administrative duties but also in undertaking practical
tasks almost too numerous to mention – clearing ditches, emptying bins,
laying car-parking mesh, fixing broken signs, supplying sandbags, repairing
equipment, maintaining rights-of-way ... The list goes on.
His conscientious and courteous approach has steered the Council through
many challenging situations and resulted in numerous successes, the latest
of which is the award of substantial grants to the Playground Action Group
for complete refurbishment of the play area in the Rec. Although we offer
Roger our very best wishes for his "retirement", we do hope that it won't be
complete, and that in addition to the honorary positions listed below, he will
still act as our general interpreter of rules and regulations, and – as always –
the provider of wise advice.
Thank you, Roger!

Wallingford & its History There are several amazing events in Wallingford during June, which should tempt you to make a way to Wallingford Museum to find out more about the Town's history.
On Saturday 13th June there will be a peal from the bells of St Mary's Church from 12.30 p.m. for about three hours, in commemoration of the signing of Magna Carta. This peal is an initiative which will be happening nationwide during that weekend. As well as listening to the peal, why not come along to the Museum that day to see the 'Magna Carta and All That!' display highlighting Wallingford's role in the events of 1215, and why it is only one of four towns mentioned in Magna Carta.
Then on Sunday 21st June there is the Town's inaugural 'Festival of Cy-cling' - a day celebrating many forms of cycling including community events as well as competitive cycling. It will be based around the tight streets of the Oxfordshire market town. One of the races will be the 'Agatha Christie Youth Girls' race! Use that as an opportunity to visit the Museum to see the exhibition 'At Home with the Queen of Crime' which presents Agatha Christie's life of 42 years residing in the town. There is also the 'Midsommer Murders' display, showing the Wallingford con-nections with this popular TV series.
The weekend of Saturday 27th / Sunday 28th June will bring many visi-tors to the town to experience Wallingford at the time of the Civil War and to witness a re-enactment battle by the English Civil War Society. What better occasion to learn about Wallingford Castle's role in the Civil War - part of the acclaimed new exhibition 'Wallingford's Royal Castle Revealed' which has fresh historical research into the life and importance of one of the greatest royal strongholds of Medieval England.
A £4 ticket will give adults (children free) unlimited access to the Museum for the whole 2015 season. Opening times are:
Tuesdays - Fridays: 2.00 - 5.00 p.m. Saturdays: 10.30 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. Sundays (June - August only) & Bank Holidays 2.00 p.m. - 5.00 p.m. www.wallingfordmuseum.org.uk

Moreton Cricket Club
The 2015 cricket season is well under way and the club is fielding sides on
Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays as well as competitive matches for the
Ladies and the Juniors. The Sunday team has not had the best start to the
season having lost their first three matches, including a very close and excit-
ing finish against ISIS in the first round of the Friendly Cup - they finally
managed to beat us in the last over. Jonny Yaxley‟s Thursday team has had
a much better start to the season having won four matches with a fifth being
cancelled because of the weather conditions. The Ladies and Junior teams
have also played one match each and both managed well deserved victories.
Tim and Rowan have continued to coach at local schools, including South
Moreton and Blewbury, under the „Chance to Shine‟ scheme which has also
resulted in recruiting some future stars for the club.
If you fancy a game then contact Tim (07958962272) – coaching for ladies
is held every Tuesday evenings and juniors on Friday evenings – everybody
welcome!! Finally, don‟t forget the annual Cricket Festival.... 23rd to 26th

Lost & Found
The sunglasses reported lost at the Fete have now been found but another
pair of glasses were lost, this time in the Craft Tent. These are untinted
and have black frames with D&G logo and turquoise on the inside. If you
have them, please contact [email protected].
Also, ten of the green and white metal stakes used to support marking tape
etc. disappeared sometime prior to the Fete. If you have them, please con-
tact John at [email protected] as they are needed for the Air
Pageant.

Time to Spare?
If you are a car owner/driver and have time to spare, the Wallingford Volun-
teer Centre would be delighted to hear from you. Although they provide
services such as shopping for the housebound, the main part of their work is
taking people who are unable to drive and find it difficult to use public
transport to the Wallingford surgery, local day centres and hospitals. Clients
pay the driver a small charge to cover petrol and running costs which ranges
from around £3 for a journey within Wallingford to £13 for a trip from
Wallingford to the Oxford or Reading hospitals - all charges include reason-
able waiting time.
You don‟t have to make a regular commitment - some volunteers do sever-
al jobs a week, others do one or two a month and you can advise the office
of periods when you are not available. Thanks to the cutbacks in hospital
transport their workload has increased by 50% over the past 12 months so
any time you can spare would be much appreciated!
To find out more, telephone 01491 836345 between 9.30 and 11.30 Monday
to Friday or email [email protected].

ternet and online services and take place in Astons Village Hall, Thorpe

own laptop or tablet if you can but we do have some available in the village
hall if you can‟t.

North & South Moreton WI
At the AGM held in March, Liz Elliot was again elected President for the
next year. Mary Hodgson was also elected to the committee.
April was a busy month. Polly Vacher gave us a very interesting talk about
life with her donkeys, Muffin and Wizard. It gave us the chance to find out
just what is involved in caring for them. The meeting was held at the Bear
as the village hall was unavailable, which made a pleasant change. We also
hosted the Thames Valley Group meeting at Aston Tirrold Village Hall,
when the Centenary Baton was passed from Berkshire into Oxfordshire on
its journey throughout the country as part of our centenary celebrations.
Julie Summers was our speaker. She is the author of „Jambusters‟ which is
about the WI‟s contribution to the war effort and has been adapted into a
television series, which is currently being shown on ITV.
Our Resolutions Meeting was in May, when we debated the need for a re-
view of how care for those in need is delivered. We were fortunate to wel-
come Ann Lursey from Age UK, who guided us through the implications
of how care is assessed at present. Our decision, voting in favour of the
Resolution will be taken to the Centenary AGM at the Albert Hall by our
local delegate. As this is a special year, a live screening of the event will
be shown at the Corn Exchange in Wallingford.
The speaker at the June meeting is Clive Holmes, who will give a talk
“Pauper to Priest” and the Garden meeting is in July. We are at present
looking into options for the outing in August. A varied programme of
speakers and events has been planned for the rest of the year. We are al-
ways pleased to welcome visitors and new members to any of our meet-
ings. These are usually held at 7.30 on the second Wednesday of each
month, usually at North Moreton Village Hall. Please contact Liz Elliot on
812562 for details. Penny Busby

All Saints, North Moreton Bad News - Temporary Disruption; Good News – Celebration Concert
This is a brief reminder that our church will have very restricted access for
the duration of the works to provide WC and kitchenette, plus a new vestry
underneath the proposed raised gallery for bell ringing.
Work begins on 1st June and is expected to last about 3 months. During
this time the church will be something of a building site and to maintain
safety, access to the church will be very restricted and it will be locked
overnight.
It is difficult to predict exactly when the bells will be available to ring, but
it is hoped that by the end of the summer this will be possible. As a fund
raising event and to celebrate the completion of the bells and associated
work, we will be holding a ploughman‟s supper and Blewbury Brass Band
concert to coincide with Harvest Festival on the evening of Sunday 20th
September. More details nearer the time.
The restored bells will be rung for this event and will give an opportunity
for other local bell ringers, who have provided continual support to our
project, to ring them as well. It will be wonderful to hear our ancient bells
ring out across the village once again.
Please support this harvest and bell celebration concert and mark the date
in your diaries now. Beryl Jones
Another Date for your Diary!
Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October: Two piano concert at
Melhuish Farm including „Carnival of the Animals‟ with instrumentation
and Heather McGregor as narrator.
Look out for details nearer the date!

North Moreton Fete
What a wonderful day was had by all on a lovely sunny afternoon at the
Church Fete held on the 10th May and what a brilliant result too as it made
after expenses £3,672.24, for church funds, that is £234 more than last year.
We are so grateful to Vickie Squires for taking on the huge responsibility of
organising this event. In an email Vickie asked for this quote to be included
about the Fete as follows: „We had a huge team of volunteers who helped
make the Fete a fantastic success, however the following people helped in
both the planning and preparation stages: Jacquie and Chris Gibson, Nora
Haycock, Patrick and Mary Greene, John Jones, Gar Evans, Yvonne and
Jeremy Howland, Sue and John Harrison. Without their continuous support
over the last four months the Fete would have not gone so smoothly! The
fantastic number of volunteers who turned out early the Sunday made such
a difference to all the activities held and we applaud their efforts’. The
North Moreton Parochial Church Council wishes to convey their grateful
thanks to everyone who helped and to those who financially contributed to
the success of the Fete and for the funds raised to support our beautiful
church. Patrick Greene Church Warden
