UFAW Animal Welfare Student Scholarship

Through its Animal Welfare Student Scholarships, UFAW aims to encourage students to develop their interests in animal welfare and to provide them with an opportunity to conduct relevant research or other (eg educational) projects. In these, and its other awards, UFAW wishes to promote high quality research that is likely to lead to substantial improvements in animal welfare. UFAW seeks to promote both fundamental research aimed at providing new insight into the subjective mental experiences of animals relevant to their welfare and at understanding their needs and preferences, and also to promote applied research aimed at developing practical solutions to animal welfare problems.

Applications are welcome from individuals studying at universities or colleges in the British Isles or an overseas institution at which there is a UFAW University Link (see: http://www.ufaw.org.uk/links). Students will usually be undertaking courses in the agricultural, biological, psychological, veterinary or zoological sciences. However, we would also be pleased to receive applications from students from other disciplines who are interested in carrying out a project in animal welfare. MSc students on appropriate courses will also be considered. Projects should be completed before the end of the degree course. The student scholarship scheme will not normally support students already studying towards a research degree (PhD, DPhil, MPhil etc).

Where the proposed project forms a part of the requirements of the student’s degree course, details of the support provided by the institution for the project should be supplied together with justification for the extra support sought from UFAW. Projects may be carried out within the UK or overseas and must be relevant to improving the welfare of farm, companion, laboratory, zoo or free-living wild animals whose welfare is compromised by human factors.

The judging panel may award the Ruth Harrison Student Scholarship’ to a high quality, or the highest quality, application addressing the welfare of farmed animals. This scholarship has been established with the support of the Farm Animal Care Trust (FACT), and is in memory of Ruth Harrison, whose tireless work at the Trust, and seminal book, ‘Animal Machines’, led to reform and long-lasting improvements in farm animal welfare both within the UK farming industry and beyond.

NB Much as UFAW applauds research that advances species conservation and other important issues – this scholarship is for work that addresses animal welfare.

Student Scholarships consist of £200 per week subsistence allowance for the Scholar plus £50 per week to the department for project expenses. Projects may be carried out at any time and usually last between four and eight weeks. Support is provided for up to 8 weeks, although projects themselves may be longer than this. Payments are made prior to the commencement of the project by cheques made out to the Scholar and the Supervisor’s Department.

The first Scholarships were awarded in 1983 and since the scheme began there have been over 350 scholars. The range of projects that have been undertaken has been very wide and in many cases scholars have published papers arising from their work in scientific literature (which we encourage). Other scholars have gone on to undertake postgraduate research in aspects of animal welfare. UFAW encourages its past scholars to keep in touch and to remain part of the UFAW team actively promoting animal welfare.

UFAW Student Scholarships Notes and Conditions

Use of funds

1. Projects and procedures funded by UFAW grants may not be altered from those specified on the application form and in the grant authorisation from UFAW without prior written permission of UFAW, and no additional funds will be provided unless UFAW so decides in its absolute discretion.

Animal Welfare Student Scholarship 2018 11

Page 12: Use of funds - ufaw.org.uk Web viewPlease note that funds can only be transferred into an account bearing the ... (200-300 word) account of their project written in ... 18.The project

2. Where funds are granted to an institution for the employment of staff at that institution or for work to be carried out by a private individual, UFAW is not the employer. It is the responsibility of the host institution to issue a contract of employment in accordance with the Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978 or equivalent legislation in other countries and with any other employment legislation. Full details of all employment costs should be provided in the application. Where UFAW provides funds for the employment of staff to undertake research, the employer is expected to protect these staff from the burdens of undertaking administrative and teaching responsibilities unless agreed otherwise by UFAW.

3. The period of the grant is strictly limited and the tenure of appointment of any persons employed by the host institution for the work must be confined strictly to the period of the grant. If staff are retained beyond this it is for the host institution’s own purposes and at their own expense.

4. All grants are made on the condition that UFAW is in no way responsible for claims under any statute or at common law and it does not indemnify the host institution against any claim for compensation or against any other claims for which the host institution may be liable as an employer, owner-occupier or user of premises or as the provider of services or facilities or in relation to the work carried out under the grant.

5. Any equipment purchased from a UFAW grant will become the property of UFAW and should be used only for the activities approved. At the end of the project the ownership and future use of the equipment will be reviewed by UFAW.

6. UFAW’s financial support should be acknowledged in all publications, presentations and press-releases arising from the work and copies of publications arising from the work should be forwarded to UFAW on their publication. UFAW should also be notified when the work is presented at conferences and meetings etc.

7. It is the responsibility of the host institution and the Grant Holder and Co-Investigators to communicate research funded by UFAW to the public at local, national and international levels, as appropriate, and to raise awareness of the role of science and research in advancing animal welfare and any related issues of public interest. The publication or release of findings may be reasonably delayed to enable protection of any intellectual property.

8. Copies of publications arising from the work should be forwarded to UFAW on their publication.

Legal and ethical

9. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be aware of all laws and codes under which the work is to be carried out and to abide by these and to obtain all necessary permissions and licences.

Use of animals

10. If the proposed work involves the use of animals, it is the responsibility of the principal applicant to check with the appropriate national or regional authority (eg Home Office in the UK) regarding the need for licences or other specific authorisation required in the country concerned and to obtain these where necessary. It is also the responsibility of the principal applicant to obtain the necessary approvals from the institution’s ethics committee where there is one.

11. UFAW requires rigorous implementation of the 3Rs. Where animals are used in research they must be afforded high standards of welfare compatible with the aims of the research. At all times conditions for husbandry and experimentation should be of high standard conducive to good welfare and to minimising stress. Enclosures should meet the physiological and behavioural needs of the animals and appropriate enrichment should be provided. The health of the animals should be maintained and monitored, and any deterioration attended to immediately. All staff involved in animal research, both at a scientific and research support level, and those involved in the breeding, handling and care of animals, must be appropriately trained and possess relevant qualifications.

12. In order that UFAW can be satisfied fully that projects involving the use of animals take the fullest possible

account of their welfare, applications should include details of the following (as appropriate) in the description of the methods:

animals - species, strain, weight, sex, age, source, transport, health status, conservation status, fate at end of project;

housing/feeding/measures to improve welfare - cage/enclosure type, size, floor, furnishings, bedding, cleaning, thermal environment, number of animals per cage, diet, feeding regime;

experimental design - experimental design, details of how numbers in test and control groups have been determined (eg by power analysis prior to the experiment), statistical methods to be used in analysis of the results; Applicants may wish to consult the following websites for help with designing an appropriately powered study before submitting their application - https://www.nc3rs.org.uk/experimental-design or http://www.3rs-reduction.co.uk/ . The following edition of the ILAR journal also contains valuable information on experimental design and analysis - http://ilarjournal.oxfordjournals.org/content/55/3.toc .

Data should be collected in a way that ensures that on publication the ARRIVE guidelines can be complied with – see https://www.nc3rs.org.uk/arrive-guidelines .

experimental procedures - experimental procedures, any risks to animal welfare (nature and duration), measures to improve the animals’ welfare, analgesia, methods of euthanasia.

Applicants (especially those submitting applications for behavioural research) may find useful, and are recommended to familiarise themselves with, the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour’s Guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioural research and teaching updated in each January issue of the journal Animal Behaviour and available on the Journal website http://asab.nottingham.ac.uk/ethics/guidelines.php

13. Financial arrangements

Funds are normally paid in GBP sterling, by cheque. Arrangements can sometimes be made to transfer funds electronically, however any costs associated with this must be met by the recipients. Please note that funds can only be transferred into an account bearing the applicant’s name or the name of the institution which will administer the award. Payment cannot be issued to third parties.

Limitation of liability

14. UFAW is in no way responsible, financially or otherwise, for the expenditure or liabilities arising out of the work other than those specifically listed and defined in the project proposal or approved in further correspondence.

Publication of reports and copyright

15. In the first instance, reports should be considered confidential to UFAW. Subsequently, by prior mutual agreement, the authors or UFAW may publish the report or offer it in part or entirety for publication. However, UFAW reserves the right to publish the brief account of the project and any accompanying illustrations in its publications, either as submitted or after editing at UFAW’s discretion, and without prior discussion with the Scholar or his/her supervisor.

Where the Scholar or his/her supervisor, having obtained UFAW’s permission to do so, publish the work or aspects of it, UFAW’s support should (unless otherwise specified by UFAW) be duly acknowledged. A draft copy of any proposed article should be submitted to UFAW for permission prior to submission for publication. Reprints of articles arising from work supported or partially supported by UFAW should be sent to UFAW in due course.

Reports

16. Student Scholars are required to submit a written report of their projects. These should be presented in the following format:

an abstract of 100 – 200 words the aim full details of the background including a critical review of related literature a clear explanation of the method results with appropriate tables, diagrams, figures and statistical analyses discussion including subsection on animal welfare implications summary of conclusions and recommendations references (quoted in full) reports should follow the ARRIVE guidelines for reporting studies in which animals were used wherever

possible - see https://www.nc3rs.org.uk/arrive-guidelines

Reports should, as far as possible, be prepared in the format of papers published in Animal Welfare (and scholars are encouraged to consult the instructions for authors for this journal). Reports need be no longer than necessary to clearly and concisely describe the project. There is no merit in producing unnecessarily lengthy reports.

Please email an electronic copy to [email protected]. A hard-copy should also be sent by post to the UFAW office: Wendy Goodwin, UFAW, The Old School, Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead, Herts AL4 8AN.

Brief account of project

16. In addition to the main report, each Scholar is asked to provide, on a separate sheet, a brief (200-300 word) account of their project written in an easily accessible style suitable for inclusion in the UFAW Annual Report or News-Sheet. This should explain the background of the project and its animal welfare benefits.

Please email an electronic copy of the brief account to: [email protected]. A hard-copy should also be sent by post to the UFAW office: Wendy Goodwin, UFAW, The Old School, Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead, Herts AL4 8AN.

Scholars are also requested to provide photographs illustrating their project, or the animals involved in it, for inclusion in UFAW publications. Digital photos should be provided in either TIFF or JPG format and in the highest resolution practicable (300 DPI is ideal).

Supervisor’s assessment

17. Project supervisors are asked to provide a brief assessment of the success, or otherwise, of the Scholar’s project. Please email an electronic copy to: [email protected]. A hard-copy should also be sent by post to the UFAW office: Wendy Goodwin, UFAW, The Old School, Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead, Herts, AL4 8AN.

Deadline

18. The project report, brief account, and supervisor assessment of the project (see above) must be submitted, via the Project Supervisor, to UFAW by 1st November in the year the project is undertaken, unless otherwise agreed in advance with UFAW.

Please note that failure to comply with these conditions and to submit reports on schedule may result in the disqualification of the applicant or of his/her organisation from obtaining grants from UFAW in future.

Oral Presentations

19. UFAW regularly holds a meeting for Student Scholars at which Scholars will be invited to present their work to an audience (likely to comprise other Scholars, students, and other persons interested in animal welfare). It is our expectation that all invited Scholars will present at this meeting. This meeting is usually held in December of the same year in which the projects are carried out.

Termination of grants

20. UFAW has the right to revoke or suspend any grant upon failure to observe any of the conditions listed above or specified by UFAW in the offer of a grant or on consideration of the progress of the work. In such a case, UFAW may require repayment or, depending on the circumstances, may reimburse the host institution for expenses incurred to the date of termination but will not be responsible for, nor will indemnify the host institution against, any claims (relating to employment or anything else - see conditions above) arising as a result of the termination.
