But more and more residential properties and businesses are using these bins as their own personal overflow. This prevents people in the street from being able to use the bins for their intended purpose. Businesses and residents are being urged to dispose of their household and business waste in thecorrect way and not use street bins as an overflow.

This comes as North West Leicestershire District Council find more than 40 bins are beingimproperly used around Coalville and Ibstock alone resulting in rubbish spilling over onto the street.

These bins are for the use of the general public to dispose of any rubbish they have while out andabout in the district. But more and more residential properties and businesses are using these binsas their own personal overflow. There are things residents can do to ensure they don't need to use these bins as an overflow:

Order more recycling bins from the council so there is no overflow

Make sure bins are always out for collection on time so a build-up doesn't occur

Businesses can also reduce the need for an overflow by:

Arranging commercial waste and recycling collections with the council or other contactors

Requesting more containers from the council to combat overflow

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NorthWest Leicestershire District Council, said: "This may not seem like a serious problem but it has realknock-on effects. If the bin is overflowing it means anyone wanting to use it can't, therefore theymay drop the rubbish on the floor. Before you know it there is a litter problem in that area whichdamages the look of the place as well as the health and safety of anyone walking by, includingchildren.

"So please, don't abuse these bins, they are there for everyone to use and help to keep our districtlooking tidy and green."
