In what ways does your media product, Use Develop, or Challenge forms and conventions
of real media products
Theorist Andrew Goodwin states that there are 5 key aspects of a music video that the
audience should look out for;
• The Beat of the Sound• The Narrative, Concept or
Performance• Star Image• The relation between the visuals
and the song• Technical Aspects of the music
video
How our Music Video uses the forms and conventions of real media products.
In Hip Hop Videos There is usually some link between the Lyrics and the visuals, due to the narrative not being the biggest element to a Hip Hop Video. In our music video you can often see a link between the lyrics and visuals .
Nicki Minaj- Superbass ‘He always in the air but he never fly coach’
Forward- ‘Im just one in a million so pick and choose’
‘Look Ma No hands’
Also in Hip- Hop videos , there are many close up shots of the artist, this is in order to show domience and power, this is also visible in our music video where there are many close up shots of our artist.
Hiphop videos often have many low angle shots to show the artists power over the situation, in our
music video we feature low angle shots of ‘Michael’ to show the power he has over his life now which
matches to our song lyrics.
How our Music Video develops the forms and conventions of real media products.
• In Hip Hop music videos the clothing is generally sporting attire, often loose and baggy, to the strength of the artist, or something very casual whichfollowed by some shots of working out in the music video.
However in our music video we don’t see the artist always wearing loose clothing infact he is
often seen to be wearing a suit to show his transitions, whilst we still kept scenes of him
working out.
Usually in Hip Hop videos there is great male dominance and they are often seen to be with
their posse in order to show their power, however we developed this by having only one
male artist and one female artist which is interesting since usually the female is seen to be highly sexualized, however we wanted to switch
this around to represent the idea of equality between the females and males
Voyeurism is used greatly within Hip Hop music in order to attract males attention, however due to our target audience being male and female we
developed the voyeurism so that instead of being used to sexualize women, we used it to attract our
audience to the story behind our song.
How our Music Video Challenge the forms and conventions of real media products.
In hiphop music video’s, the storyline often is centred around getting drunk, parties and sex,
however in our music video it presents a inspirational storyline about ‘pushing forward’
and changing your life around Something which many young adults and youths can relate to.
Furthermore in Hip-Hop videos we often see references to wealth and jewelry to signify
wealth and status however we didn't’t want this to be the main focus of our video as we believed it would take away from the messages our music
video presented.
How our Magazine Advert use the forms and conventions of real media products.
Usually Magazine adverts, in particular the Hip-hop genre, use social medias to show a interaction between the artist and the audience. In our magazine advert we have also done this by putting links to the twitter, Facebook and instagram aswell
as website of the artists, in order to show a connection between them and the audience.
Also in magazine adverts a typical convention in the Hip Hop genre is that the artist is the main focus
with often little or nothing going on in the background, we also wanted to incorporate this to make sure that our artists are the main center of
attention.
How our Magazine Advert Developed the forms and conventions of real media products
Usually in Hip Hop magazine adverts we can see that the artists are usually center of the magazine advert however we developed this by putting our artists to the left of the ad, we believed that by doing this it would allow us more text space and we wanted the promotion of the album to
be the highlight therefore we thought this would look more effective.
How our Magazine Advert Challenge the forms and conventions of real media products
We used a promotional offer featured on the magazine advert which hasn’t been seen in
many hip hop adverts, this is because we believe this will make the marketing campaign more
effective and encourage purchase of the album
How our Digipack used the forms and conventions of real media products
Barcode was included to match up to the conventions of a digipack and make it look like a
more realistic product which could be sold.
Colour schemes and themes were consistent throughout; we took inspiration from Rihannas
Digipack where we can see a clear theme throughout each panel in the product.
How our Digipack developed the forms and conventions of real media products
The use of font is different to most hip hop, we kept it a lot simpler and instead of conventionally putting the text across
horizontally we put it vertically. We used subtle colour schemes so that it doesn’t take away
focus from the artist .Despite most hip hop albums having bold bright digipacks
with a lot going on we thought that less is more and we kept our images simple to coincide with the simplicity of the
album.
How our Digipack challenged the forms and conventions of real media products
Often the digipack will show both artists at the front, however we placed it so that one artist is at the front and one is at the back cover of the
digipack this is different to conventional hip hop digipacks since they usually include the artist
only at the front.
