Iampleasedtoannouncethe2012–2013seasonofUSCVisionsandVoices:TheArtsandHumanitiesInitiative.CreatedbyPresidentNikiassevenyearsago,thisannualseriesofperformances, lectures,exhibitionsanddiscussionshasbecomeacenterpieceofcampuslifeandahallmarkofaUSCeducation.

AtUSCwebelievetheartsandhumanitiesnotonlytransmitcorevalues,butalsochallengeandshapethem.Withgreatpowertostirourmindsandemotions,theygiveuspleasureandcallustoaction.Theyareanenriching,joyful,trulynecessaryaspectofour lives.VisionsandVoicesextendstheartsandhumanitiesbeyondtheclassroomandcreatesdiverse,transformativeexperiencesforouracademiccommunity.Quiteoften,Ihearaboutstudentscontinuingtodiscussandreflectontheseeventslongaftertheyareover,sparkingfurtherinquiryamongfriendsandroommatesorthediscoveryofsurprisingconnectionstocourseworkandresearch.

Thisyear’ssignatureeventsofferabroadrangeofexcitingspeakersandperformances.InOctober,we’llhostatimelydiscussionwithnotedjournalistsandauthorsFrankRichandFranLebowitz,whowillbringtheirwitandwisdomtoanexplorationofAmericaatacrossroads—withthepresidentialelectionjustweeksaway,wheredoesthenationstandandhowwillweshapethefuture?Laterinthefall,oneofthemostdistinguishedplaywrightsofourtime,TonyAwardwinnerDavidHenryHwang,willvisitUSCforalookbackonhiscelebratedcareer,whichincludestheworksM. Butterfl y and Golden Child.

InFebruary,wewelcometheinimitableartistandmusicianPattiSmith.HerpioneeringworkblendedpoetryandrockandrollasshefedofftheculturalinspirationthatwasNewYorkCityinthe1970s.Herrecentbook,Just Kids,takesusbacktothetimewhenshecreatedartwithherfriendRobertMapplethorpeandwentontorecordheralbumHorses—oftenconsideredoneofthegreatestrecordsofalltime.Andinthespring,ODC/DancebringsitscriticallyacclaimedfusionofballetandmodernperformancetoUSC’sBovardAuditorium.TheenergyandcharismaofthisdancecompanywillamazeyouaswecloseouttheVisionsandVoicesseason.

IamalsoexcitedforanewseriesalignedwithVisionsandVoices,theProvost’sWritersSeries.USChassomanytalentedandinfluentialfacultyproducingremarkablestories,poetryandcriticalwork.Overthecourseoffourevents,studentswillhavetheopportunitytoengageinintimatediscussionswiththeauthors—discussionsthatwillexplorethethemes,ideasandexperiencesthatshapedtheirmostrecentpublications.ProfessorDavidTreuer,forexample,willdiscusshisbookRez Life: An Indian’s Journey Through Reservation Life,whichtellsastoryfromhisperspectiveasanOjibweIndianonMinnesota’sLeechLakeReservation.

Africa’s HopeisanemotionallychargedandvibrantshowthatblendsthetruestoriesofRwandangenocidesurvivorswithtraditionalIntoredance,Kinyarwandasinging,contemporarydanceandmovementandliveEastAfricandrumming.CreatedbyMashirika,themosthighlyacclaimedtheatrecompanyinRwanda,Africa’s Hope isanincredibleandenergizingperformancethatlookstothefutureinthewakeofthe1994genocide.Overthecourseofthreemonths,onemillionpeopleweremurderedinRwandasimplybecauseofwhotheywere.AcastofyoungandtalentedRwandanartiststellsthestoriesoftheircountrythroughtheatre,danceandmusic.Whilethisproductionconveysthebrutalityoftheconflict,italsohighlightsuniversallessonsofindividualresponsibility.Establishedin1997,Mashirikaisdedicatedtopresentingworkshopsandplaysexploringtheissuesaroundcollectivetrauma,conflictresolution,HIV/AIDSeducation,genocidehealingandreconciliation.
