DESCRIPTION

Visions and Voices is a USC-wide arts and humanities initiative that is unparalleled in higher education. President C. L. Max Nikias established the initiative during his tenure as provost in order to engage USC students in the arts and humanities. Highlighting the university’s commitment to interdisciplinary approaches, the initiative features a spectacular array of events conceived and organized by faculty and schools throughout the university. Every Visions and Voices event is designed to challenge students and expand their perspectives.

A Message from Elizabeth GarrettDearFriendofUSC,

Iampleasedtoannouncethe2012–2013seasonofUSCVisionsandVoices:TheArtsandHumanitiesInitiative.CreatedbyPresidentNikiassevenyearsago,thisannualseriesofperformances, lectures,exhibitionsanddiscussionshasbecomeacenterpieceofcampuslifeandahallmarkofaUSCeducation.

AtUSCwebelievetheartsandhumanitiesnotonlytransmitcorevalues,butalsochallengeandshapethem.Withgreatpowertostirourmindsandemotions,theygiveuspleasureandcallustoaction.Theyareanenriching,joyful,trulynecessaryaspectofour lives.VisionsandVoicesextendstheartsandhumanitiesbeyondtheclassroomandcreatesdiverse,transformativeexperiencesforouracademiccommunity.Quiteoften,Ihearaboutstudentscontinuingtodiscussandreflectontheseeventslongaftertheyareover,sparkingfurtherinquiryamongfriendsandroommatesorthediscoveryofsurprisingconnectionstocourseworkandresearch. 

Thisyear’ssignatureeventsofferabroadrangeofexcitingspeakersandperformances.InOctober,we’llhostatimelydiscussionwithnotedjournalistsandauthorsFrankRichandFranLebowitz,whowillbringtheirwitandwisdomtoanexplorationofAmericaatacrossroads—withthepresidentialelectionjustweeksaway,wheredoesthenationstandandhowwillweshapethefuture?Laterinthefall,oneofthemostdistinguishedplaywrightsofourtime,TonyAwardwinnerDavidHenryHwang,willvisitUSCforalookbackonhiscelebratedcareer,whichincludestheworksM. Butterfl y and Golden Child.

InFebruary,wewelcometheinimitableartistandmusicianPattiSmith.HerpioneeringworkblendedpoetryandrockandrollasshefedofftheculturalinspirationthatwasNewYorkCityinthe1970s.Herrecentbook,Just Kids,takesusbacktothetimewhenshecreatedartwithherfriendRobertMapplethorpeandwentontorecordheralbumHorses—oftenconsideredoneofthegreatestrecordsofalltime.Andinthespring,ODC/DancebringsitscriticallyacclaimedfusionofballetandmodernperformancetoUSC’sBovardAuditorium.TheenergyandcharismaofthisdancecompanywillamazeyouaswecloseouttheVisionsandVoicesseason.

IamalsoexcitedforanewseriesalignedwithVisionsandVoices,theProvost’sWritersSeries.USChassomanytalentedandinfluentialfacultyproducingremarkablestories,poetryandcriticalwork.Overthecourseoffourevents,studentswillhavetheopportunitytoengageinintimatediscussionswiththeauthors—discussionsthatwillexplorethethemes,ideasandexperiencesthatshapedtheirmostrecentpublications.ProfessorDavidTreuer,forexample,willdiscusshisbookRez Life: An Indian’s Journey Through Reservation Life,whichtellsastoryfromhisperspectiveasanOjibweIndianonMinnesota’sLeechLakeReservation.

Africa’s HopeisanemotionallychargedandvibrantshowthatblendsthetruestoriesofRwandangenocidesurvivorswithtraditionalIntoredance,Kinyarwandasinging,contemporarydanceandmovementandliveEastAfricandrumming.CreatedbyMashirika,themosthighlyacclaimedtheatrecompanyinRwanda,Africa’s Hope isanincredibleandenergizingperformancethatlookstothefutureinthewakeofthe1994genocide.Overthecourseofthreemonths,onemillionpeopleweremurderedinRwandasimplybecauseofwhotheywere.AcastofyoungandtalentedRwandanartiststellsthestoriesoftheircountrythroughtheatre,danceandmusic.Whilethisproductionconveysthebrutalityoftheconflict,italsohighlightsuniversallessonsofindividualresponsibility.Establishedin1997,Mashirikaisdedicatedtopresentingworkshopsandplaysexploringtheissuesaroundcollectivetrauma,conflictresolution,HIV/AIDSeducation,genocidehealingandreconciliation.

CalledGypsy, Tsigan, Gitane, Cygane, Zigeuner,theRomapeoplehavewanderedtheworldforathousandyears.They’vebeenromanticizedbutalsobrutallypersecuted.Tsigan: The Gypsy Poem isanacclaimedbook-lengthpoeticsequencewrittenbyUSCpoetCeciliaWoloch.ItintertwinesherpersonaljourneyofidentitywiththelargerforcesintheworldthathaveshapedtheRomapeople’sfateandfortunes.Tsiganbotheulogizesandcelebrates the lives of Gypsies, a people who haveenduredcenturiesofdispossession,exile,povertyandextermination.ThetextofTsiganwillformthebasisforthismovingmultimediaperformance.Woloch’sreadingfromthepoemwillcometolifeagainstabackdropofarchivalfootagedepictingthehistoryandtravailsoftheRomapeople.Musicanddancewillbewoventhroughouttheperformance,celebratingthelyricalfireoftheGypsyspirit.TheperformancewillbefollowedbyaconversationwithWolochandStephenSmith,executivedirectoroftheUSCShoahFoundationInstitute.
