Sample Scenario:Sam, a die-hard fan of TV Series ‘Lost’, is able to download and play the episode on his WiMAX phone even while he is still on a subway ride.

What happened:When a user requests content from the server, the phone intelligently surveys nearby peers to check for the same content. On successful discovery of an eligible peer, an ad hoc P2P connection was established with this peer and the content is transferred to the user. The transfer is extremely fast irrespective of the low coverage zone.

Sample Scenario #1:Mary uses her and her 12 year old daughter’s WiMAX devices to ensure that they don’t become separated by a greater distance than she is comfortable with at the mall.

Sample Scenario#2:Sam and his friends use their WiMAX devices to notify them that they are in the same general area so that they can meet.

What happened:In both cases the WiMAX devices use peer discovery to determine local proximity of other devices. Channel propagation loss, number of hops and environment type is used to estimate distance between devices.

Every time an mCoupon is shared the sender gets some additional incentive for viral marketing.What happened:

A server initially provides an mCoupon that is virally shared. Every time a mCoupon is shared the sender gets some additional incentive for viral marketing. The receiver can share it with others to receive incentives but only after she/he plays the embedded advertisement at least once. Since the operator is in control of the P2P network, it can accurately track things like credit points earned and user preferences.

Opportunistic MS Relay Usage Model Example

MS Relaying for in-coverage and out-of-coverage MS significantly enhances throughput

What happened:As Susan walks into the atrium of a large office building she begins to receive a large video file that was just completed back in the home office for use in her next meeting. The coverage in the atrium is poor, but Sam’s device is able to serve as a relay, thus significantly increasing the throughput to Susan’s device and ensuring an important video is downloaded in time.

Customer Premise Relay Usage Model Example

MS Relaying for providing coverage inside a business, home or office

What happened:A low cost customer premise relay station (RS) is placed in a location in which it receives a sufficient signal to/from the WiMAX base station (BS). The customer premise RS then provides indoor coverage to mobile stations (MS) within the coffee shop with no additional infrastructure, site planning or network management costs to the infrastructure provider.

Sample Scenario: Joe owns a small coffee shop that serves a high end clientele. He notices that his customers are having trouble getting good WiMAX service, so he buys and installs a small, inexpensive relay station near an exterior window that improves coverage throughout his shop. Now his customers happily use their WiMAX devices and stay longer, sipping coffee.
