From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ... My Dear Friends,
The Gospel today tells us the contrast between the citizens of Nazareth, who closed their hearts to Jesus, and Peter, who opened up his heart and his total availability to Jesus. Craftily, the evangelist Luke points to Peter, James and John, and to their total response to the good Lord after a truly miraculous catch: “With that they brought their boats to land, left everything, and became His followers” (Lk 5:11). Mind you, all
the apostles were married, except for John, very likely in his mid-teens at the time. I can only picture the shock of their families and the anxiety of survival in a time totally lacking any social programs. I must presume that Jesus, so merciful and compassionate, must have made some kind of arrangement for their families. Even today the Church allows clerics and religious with vows to take a leave of absence to support their relatives in times of need. We must also be aware that Jesus was home in the rainy and cold season, and then He preached the Good News during the good weather season (April – October), traveling throughout the region, and it was only then that the group of apostles and pious ladies followed Him around. But let’s go back to the incredible faith, courage and humility of Peter: “Leave me, Lord. I am a sinful man.” It is with such humility that at the beginning of each Holy Mass I confess: “I am a sinner … How about you?” And all of us very humbly confess our sins and gratefully accept the merciful forgiveness of God. Let us rejoice in His merciful compassion!
Peter then followed God’s call, just as Isaiah did after being forgiven of all his sinfulness, and finding the courage to answer the Lord’s query: “Whom shall I send?” with His generous: “Send me!”
Through the centuries, countless deacons, priests, nuns, monks and ministers have answered: “Send me …” Please pray today for those who serve you, dear people, and let us implore God to send us new vocations, especially to the priesthood.
I would like, also, to point out the powerful witnessing of Paul to the resurrection of Jesus. Writing about 20 some years after Jesus’ resurrection, the Apostle of the Gentiles destroys the ideas of certain Christians belonging to the sect of the “Wisdom-People.” In doing so, Paul clearly affirmed the apparitions of the risen Lord “seen by 500 brothers at once, most of whom are still alive.” The resurrection of Jesus did turn timid fishermen into fearless preachers, who gave their lives as witnesses of Jesus, the risen God.

EL LLAMADO DE DIOS Al ser confrontado con el poder y la majestad de Dios, la primera respuesta del profeta Isaías es reconocer su pecado. “Ay de mí, estoy perdido porque soy un hombre de labios impuros”, dice en voz alta. De la misma manera, con las redes de pesca repentinamente llenas con la orden de Jesús, Pedro cae de rodillas y clama: “Señor, apártate de mí porque soy un pecador”. Después Pedro se levanta, deja atracado su bote y sigue a Jesús. Isaías también experimentó un cambio impresionante. Cuando escuchó al Señor que decía: “¿A quién voy a enviar? ¿Quién irá por nosotros?”, Isaías respondió: “Aquí estoy, envíame”. Somos llamados diariamente por el Señor resucitado. Se nos recuerda del poder salvador del Evangelio y sabemos de corazón que, como escribió san Pablo, creer en otra cosa no nos llevará a ningún lado. ¿Qué se necesita para que dejes el pecado? ¿Qué se necesita para que caigas de rodillas? ¿Qué se necesita para que dejes lo que no es importante y aceptes el llamado de ser mensajero de Dios?
