HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! This year is special because it is an Olympic year, filled with plenty of gymnastics action that culminates in London and will be celebrated after the Olympic Games with the Kellogg’s® Tour of Gymnastics Champions.

The year kicks off in New York City with the Nastia Liukin Cup and the AT&T American Cup, a FIG World Cup event for the second

consecutive year. These events take place March 2–3, respectively, in Madison Square Garden, the world’s most famous arena. Jordyn Wieber, Alexandra Raisman and John Orozco are scheduled to compete against a field of world-class gymnasts.

Shortly after the AT&T American Cup, the Kellogg’s® Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships occur in Everett, Wash. Held every two years, the Pacific Rim Championships traditionally feature gymnasts from all over the Pacific Rim, including China, Japan, and other countries. This friendly competition will showcase even more of the world’s top gymnasts, as they prepare for the Olympics.

In April, USA Gymnastics will host the FIG World Acro Gymnastics Championships and World Age Group Competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex’s HP Field House at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. More than 600 gymnasts are expected to participate in the competition, scheduled from April 16–22.

In June, the run to London becomes intense with the Visa Championships, June 7–10 at the Chaifetz Arena in Saint Louis. Performances at the Visa Championships will determine which gymnasts advance to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, June 28–July 1 in San Jose, Calif., at the HP Pavilion, where the Olympic Teams will be named. The national championships for rhythmic and trampoline will also take place in San Jose, where the U.S. Olympians will be announced.

Following the Olympics, USA Gymnastics will kick off the Kellogg’s® Tour of Gymnastics Champions, a 40-city tour that takes place from September–November 2012. Tickets will be going on sale soon around the country, so be ready so that you don’t miss this exciting opportunity.

There is no doubt that this is going to be an exciting year! USA Gymnastics has so many things to look forward to and we want everyone to join us in celebrating this great sport and our wonderful athletes. Go USA!

USA Gymnastics’ Talent Opportunity Program (TOPs) is in its 20th season and is still going strong. Fifty athletes participated in the three-day National TOPs Team Camp at the Women’s National Team Training Center, held at the Karolyi Ranch in Huntsville, Texas, Nov. 30–Dec. 4. An additional 72 athletes participated in the TOPs B Camp, Dec. 4–8. For the second-consecutive year, 8-year-old gymnasts participated in the training camps with tremendous success. The athletes were instructed in all four Olympic events and dance by the National Team Developmental Coaching staff. Lectures were also given by the staff to the coaches on training techniques.

TOPs is a talent search and educational program for female gymnasts ages 7–10 and their coaches. During the months of June and July, 2,000 gymnasts ages 7–10 were evaluated on physical abilities at the state level. From there, the best 280

8–10 year old athletes were invited to participate in the National TOPs Testing in October, where they were evaluated on t h e same physical abilities tests and basic gymnastics skills. From National TOPs Testing, 50 athletes were named to the TOPs National Team and invited to participate in the National TOPs Training Camp in December. Former TOPs athletes include Carly Patterson, Chellsie Memmel, Courtney Kupets, Tasha Schwikert, Alicia Sacramone, Samantha Peszek and Jordyn Wieber, just to name a few. Gary Warren, the USA Gymnastics Elite Program Director who oversees the TOPs program, said, “The training camps were, without a doubt, the most productive camps in our 19 years of existence and the inclusion of the 8-year-old athletes was a tremendous success.”

On Sept. 17, 2011, as more than 20,000 people set a new world record for most simultaneous handstands in honor of National Gymnastics Day, gymnastics clubs

across the country completed fundraising efforts for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Since 2001, gymnastics clubs have helped raise more than $1.5 million for CMN,

including $120,050 this year.

The funds are distributed to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals locally, based on where the money was raised.

This year, Northern Elite Gymnastics and Cheer in Flanders, N.J., raised $22,171,

more than any other club in the nation. For their efforts, they will receive a $1,500

AAI gift certificate and a $200 Member Services gift card, which can be used

for educational courses, sanctions or memberships. California Sports Center in

San Jose, Calif., $18,012.60, and Gymnastics World and Cheer in Broadway Heights, Ohio, $17,935.10, were the second and third highest fundraisers, respectively.

Individually, the top fundraiser was Abby Villenauve (shown left) of Gymnastics World in Broadview Heights, Ohio, who collected $7,642.02. This is the third, consecutive year that Abby collected the most money for CMN. Shelly Katz and Mary Kate Cacchione, both of Northern Elite, finished second

and third in overall fundraising with $4,555 and $4,550, respectively.

All three fundraisers win round-trip airfare, two event tickets, a one-night hotel stay and pre-event VIP hospitality passes to attend the 2012 AT&T American Cup in New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

For Abby, who has raised $26,342 all-time for CMN and National Gymnastics Day, her fundraising efforts come with a big reward. “I know that the money is going to a wonderful hospital and making families more comfortable while they are there,” Abby said.

The 14 year-old invited friends and families to her website where they have the opportunity to donate and receive a raffle ticket for prizes from her father’s company, including a $250 Apple gift card and Bose headphones.

“I had a short article published in our local paper letting the community know I was raising money and that I would be at my local grocery store selling raffle tickets,” Abby added.

Abby’s efforts have not gone unnoticed: she has received the Emily Lewis award, named for a patient at Rainbow Babies that passed away. The award, which honors Emily’s memory, recognizes young philanthropists in the area.

“I did not know Emily personally, but I have met her family. That experience made me realize how much the money I raise helps the families,” Abby said.

The second-place earner was Shelly (shown below), a 10 year-old Level 5, who says her favorite event is floor. Shelly has a personal connection to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals as two of her grandparents are pediatricians, while her mother is a special education teacher.

“Several of my mom’s students need medical care from CMN hospitals,” Shelly said. “Helping children be successful in life is important to both my grandparents and parents, so it has become important for our entire family.”

Shelly says she worked with her sister, Rayna, and her parents to raise her funds. Rayna helped create letters, which were handed out to their religious-school teachers and some of their teachers at school. Shelly’s mom

emailed family, friends and community leaders, alerting them to her daughter’s efforts.

“After that, the money just kept coming in,” Shelly said.

Finally, 15 year-old Mary Kate (shown below), a Level 9 and one of Shelly’s teammates, raised the third-most funds. Mary Kate has participated in the National Gymnastics Day fundraiser for the last four years, bringing in around $16,000 combined.

“The kids motivate me,” Mary Kate said. “Every time I watch a video of them or see them in person, I just want to do everything in my power to help them.”

Mary Kate, whose favorite event is floor, says she had help from her friends and family to raise money. Her large family, which she

contacted via email, came through, in addition to friends from school, whom she encouraged to come out and support Northern Elite’s National Gymnastics Day celebration.

“The best part of the fundraiser is when it is over and you can think about what a difference you have made in someone’s life,” Mary Kate reflected.

Jordyn Wieber won every major competition she entered in 2011, including the World Championships, the Visa Championships and the AT&T American Cup.

Wieber, nicknamed “Jo,” trains at Twistars USA with her coaches John and Kathryn Geddert in Dimondale, Mich.

Something you might not know about Wieber? When this 16-year-old gymnastics sensation is at DeWitt High School, she likes to keep a low profile avoiding attention if at all possible. “I would rather just blend in at school,” said Wieber.

After winning the 2011 world title in Tokyo, Japan, in Oct., Wieber returned to school and to a huge welcome party waiting for her with all of the students lining the hallways to say congratulations. Wieber smiled as she recalled the day. “My mom knew about it and tricked me. My mom told me I had an appointment with my counselor, so she came into school with me. It was nice, but I was very embarrassed.”

Wieber takes two classes at her high school in addition to two online courses. She is a junior and will graduate in 2013. She plans to go to college but won’t compete in collegiate gymnastics since she has turned professional.

“It was definitely a hard decision to make,” said Wieber. “A part of me wanted to compete in collegiate gymnastics. My family and I thought about it for a while and worked through all of the details. I’m happy with my decision.”

Wieber hopes to study psychology and is interested in becoming a psychologist or therapist someday.

The Wiebers are a close-knit family. The Wieber family includes her mom and dad, two sisters and a brother. They are all athletes so they have a lot in common. Wieber’s older sister is in med school and runs marathons, her older brother is a senior in high school and the quarterback of the football team and her younger sister is a soccer player.

The family enjoys spending time at their cottage in Michigan where they snow ski. Of course, Wieber is taking a break from snow skiing these days as she prepares for the Olympic Games.

It was Wieber’s parents, Rita and David, that got Jordyn involved with gymnastics at age 4. “She had all these muscles when she was little,” said Rita. “We thought gymnastics would be a great fit for her.”

“My favorite part of gymnastics is competing,” said Wieber. “To go out there and show everyone what you’ve been practicing is just an amazing feeling.”

When asked what she likes about gymnastics, she said, “I love gymnastics because it’s a new challenge everyday. It’s not always easy, but I love coming into the gym, being with my teammates and working hard to accomplish my goals.”

Outside of the gym Wieber is your average 16-year-old girl. She got her driver’s license in the summer of 2011 and enjoys the independence. She likes manicures and pedicures with her sisters, movies and shopping with her friends, and getting dressed up for banquets and dinner outings. Her favorite stores at the mall are Forever 21 and the Buckle, her favorite vacation was Mexico with her entire family, her favorite event is beam and her favorite skill is her standing full on beam.

Oh yeah, and if she wasn’t a gymnast, she would probably be a runner like her mom and

sister – she definitely would not play a sport with a ball.

With Kathryn and John in 2006.
