CARDIO1. Look at page 95. Why

was the development of new farming technology important to the settling of the Plains region ?

The Industrial Revolution created a huge labor force, or supply of workers. But most of them were paid too little to support their families.  People moved to the Midwest, hoping their lives would be better there. The Homestead Act of 1862 gave 160 acres of land to any adult who agreed to farm it and live there for five years.

Section 3: The Emergence of a World Power

In 1929, the United States experienced an economic disaster called the Great Depression. Factories closed, people lost their jobs, and farms went out of business.

In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt created a plan called the New Deal. These were government programs to help people get jobs and restore the economy.

From 1941 to 1945, the United States was involved in World War II. In the Soviet Union, the form of government was communism, where the state—not the citizens—owns all the property. The United States feared that communism would spread around the world, and the Cold War, a period of tension when there wasn’t actually fighting, began. After World War II, the U.S. economy improved. But not everyone was happy. Segregation was still a way of life in many places. Martin Luther King, Jr., led the civil rights movement to win equal rights for African Americans.

1. What was the purpose of the New Deal and why was it needed?

2. Which people tried to help the poor?
