From the Pastor: From time to time I stop for a few moments and

try to pay attention to some things that are happening

that some may notice, but not everyone may see or

know. Here are a few things I’ve noticed and wanted

you to know about.

VBS Alive was a great ministry again this year.

Six churches from Rapid City took part: Bethel Assembly,

Destiny Foursquare, Dove Christian Center, Faith Luther-

an, First Christian, and First Baptist. We averaged 142

kids each night and 90 volunteers. On the last night, we

packaged 10,000 dry goods meals. There were 300 vol-

unteers that helped with this project. We raised

$2,400.00 between the six churches to cover the costs

of these meals. Our theme for VBS this year was based

on Hebrews 10:24 and focused on having a missional

mindset in our world. I was very pleased and proud of

First Baptist’s involvement in this year’s vbs. We were

well represented on all levels: students, volunteers, lead-

ership, and financially. Continued on page 2

From the Pastor, Continued: It’s exciting to see how the congregation has responded to paying off our re-

modeling debt. As I write this note, we’re less than $1,000.00 from paying off the debt.

The Stewardship Ministry is beginning to plan how we can celebrate this accomplish-

ment. Please watch for further announcements about this.

We have just finished our series on the Seven Deadly Sins in the Church and have

started a new series based on Matthew 5:14-16 entitled, “City on a Hill.” When we start-

ed the “sin” series, I had no idea how it might shake out. Most of the people I’ve talked

to about their experience felt it was a healthy thing to stand in front of the mirror like

we did and xray our lives for the presence of these sins.

It won’t be long and the full swing of camping season will be upon us. Are you

going to camp this summer? We have brochures in the office that describe different

camps available. If cost is a factor for you or your family, talk to Josh or me and we’ll

see if we can figure something out. Josh Bond will be the director of Trail Camp this

year and he’ll also be helping with worship at Jr. High Camp. I’ll be the Camp Pastor at

Jr. High Camp again this summer.

By the time you get July’s newsletter, we’ll be about a month into our single ser-

vice change. Change is always a challenge for us no matter what age we are. As human

beings, we’re creatures of habit. I believe with my whole heart that we are constantly

changing our whole lives. Physical changes, family changes, financial changes, friend-

ship changes, and spiritual changes are just a few of the transitions we’re confronted

with. The very definition of growth means that change will be part of the process. I

want to encourage you in the midst of the changes we are going through to hang in

there. If you have ideas or thoughts, please share them. Let’s keep the conversation

going as we journey together.

Thank you for the privilege of serving among you.

Theme Verse for 2013

Psalm 133:1

“How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together

in unity.”

If you have an event, announce-

ment, or anything else that you

would like included in the Au-

gust newsletter, please send

them to Stephanie, by noon,

on July 15th! ([email protected]) It’s hard to believe, but it is time

to start thinking about lawn

mowing again! Depending on

the weather, of course, we are

looking for individuals or fami-

lies to take a month of mowing,

July through October. If you are

able to volunteer, please con-

tact the office or a member of

Physical Maintenance.

Pray for a Cabin Cabin #5 is named for Mary Irene Laughlin. Her first mission assign-ment was India, but was later moved to Burma (Myanmar) and was one of the last missionaries to leave as World War II heated up. After retirement, she spent 30 years doing volunteer work at a Baptist retirement home in California.

Cabin 5 The Camp Judson Camp Commit-tee is asking that our church pray for Cabin #5 at Camp Judson this summer.

The youth and adults who will be housed in this cabin this summer need our prayers that they will come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and grow in Him.

We are Keith and Cheryl Varnado. We have two children. Katherine, 19, studies at Dakota Wesleyan Universi-ty, and Abigail, 17, is a senior at Douglas High School. Keith is

originally from Amite, Louisiana, and serves in the United States Air Force stationed at Ellsworth AFB. Cheryl is origi-

nally from Waterbury, Nebraska, and works as a government civilian on Ellsworth AFB. Our military family lived 10 years in Europe (England and Germany) and 11 years in New Mexico, Utah, Idaho and South Dakota. Cheryl and the girls arrived

to Ellsworth AFB July of 2012 and Keith rejoined the family in October after finishing his second tour in South Korea. We are grateful to the LORD for guiding us to

this church community, and we are excited to be part of the congregation at First Baptist Church. We are looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hello FBC friends and family! Hope your summer has been great so far! I am be-

ginning to set my gaze on things for the fall and winter months, and would love to en-

list your help. There are potentially many of you who have a gift in teaching. There per-

haps are some of you who would enjoy setting up activities and games for young peo-

ple. Maybe there are some of you who would love to facilitate a book or Bible study. I

would love to help you get involved in an area where you can find fulfillment through

exercising your spiritual gifts. There are many areas where you can get involved and

the list I am attaching is by no means exhaustive. Perhaps you have an idea our area in

which you would like to serve. Feel free to send me a text, email, or phone call and we

can set up a time to discuss your idea. I look forward to hearing from many of you and

working alongside with you in ministry! Please prayerfully consider.
