November 2014

It feels to me like we‘ve talked

quite a bit about money these

past few months, but in a

good way! Paying off the

endowment loan is a huge

accomplishment for this

congregation, and at the

current pace of giving, it looks

like you will make that

happen by the end of

December. The verdict is still

out on the budgeted shortfall,

but I have this hope that it,

too, will be covered.

Why my optimism? Because I

sense that folks here at

Rochelle UMC are ―getting it.‖

You understand that giving is

not so much about money as

it is about commitment,

priorities, trust and love.

Dollars given through

Rochelle UMC are an

investment in our people and

our community, and both are

worth all that we can give

them.

We also have experienced

what can happen when

EVERYONE participates … at

whatever level is possible for

each of us. I believe God is

teaching us another aspect of

being the body of Christ.

When we take seriously our

prayer that God would make

us one in Christ, one with

each other and one in ministry

to all the world, we realize that

‗oneness‘ isn‘t about agreeing

to do everything together or

the same way … it‘s about

focusing on the one mission

we‘ve been given to love God

and our neighbors.

So how best can we do that

in the coming year? What

ministries need to be funded?

What needs to happen with

our building to make it more

user-friendly? Who needs our

help? Who needs to know

God‘s love through us? What

things are not working? What

should we let go of? These

are questions to ask as we all

consider next year‘s budget.

If you have thoughts,

concerns, ideas or questions,

let‘s talk about it. Let‘s do all

that we can to plan for the

substantive ministry God calls

us to in 2015.

Blessings,

Pastor Cindy

Bishop Is

Coming

Bishop Sally

Dyck will be

preaching

Sunday,

November 30 in celebration of

Rochelle United Methodist

Church‘s 170th Anniversary.

There will also be a special

coffee hour to celebrate this

special event. You will not want

to miss this special Sunday.

This month I would you to get to

know Dianne and Marv Jenner.

Dianne was born in Cairo, Illinois

but when she was three her

family moved to Polo where she

attended grade school and high

school. Her first memory was

singing a solo when she was

four at the Methodist Church.

She was active in dance class,

girl scouts, MYF all through high

school, and also was a baton

twirler. Dianne grew up in a

hurry when her dad died when

she was just twelve, and she

began working at the ice cream

parlor on weekends and in the

summer when she was thirteen.

She has two sisters, one of

whom is our own Rosie Clue!

After high school she began

working at Swift in the office and

soon joined our church. She met

Marv at Swift, and they were

married within a year.

Dianne retired from Swift when

their son, Bob, was born. When

he was two, she went to work as

a bookkeeper at Sawicki Motors,

and then she was the secretary

at the Presbyterian Church until

1972 when Susan was born.

When Sue was three, Dianne

started her own real estate

business, Rochelle Property

Management which she owned

for over twenty-five years. She

has also been very active in our

church: she has gone on six

mission trips with the cluster,

was chairman of Trustees,

painted the mural upstairs in

Hicks Hall, and cooks our

Wednesday night dinners. Thank

you Dianne! Also, she is a

member of the Kiwanis Club and

the Rochelle Women‘s Club. A

highlight for her was in 2010

when she was chosen

community leader! Her hobbies

are directing theater for VCCT

and collecting Jewel dinnerware.

A highlight for Dianne is on her

70th birthday, she went

skydiving. She figured if Jim

Moorehead could do it at 90, she

could do it at 70.

Marv was born in 1940 in Amboy

where he attended elementary

and high school. He enjoyed

sports and in eighth grade he

went to state for track and

baseball. His dad had a tough

work ethic, and Marv repaired

cars, mowed lawns, baled hay,

and trapped muskrat to sell their

fur. He also loved to hunt, trap,

and fish. At age sixteen, Marv

worked for Del Monte for ninety

cents an hour in the summer,

and when he was seventeen, he

ran the crème style department.

After graduating in 1958, Marv

joined the army and became part

of the 82nd

Airborne Combat

Engines Division. He was

stationed at Fort Leanordwood,

Camp McCoy, and then Camp

Haven where he was a fireman

and cook for two years. After he

was released from the army, he

went to work at Swift. Marv was

the first person hired and the last

to leave when it closed. He then

worked at Swift in St. Charles for

fifteen more years in

maintenance for a total of thirty-

four years. During this time, he

attended Kishwaukee College

nights for three years. Marv has

two brothers and two sisters, one

of whom is Jane who will soon

be moving to Rochelle and who

was his Sunday School teacher

at the Methodist Church in Polo.

Now that Marv is retired, he is a

landlord, raises chickens, and

enjoys hunting with his nephews.

He is a member of Golden K,

Hub City Cruisers, and the

Masonic Lodge for forty-two

years.

Marv and Dianne have been

married for 52 years. They enjoy

flea markets, casinos, and

traveling. They have traveled

Route 66 from start to finish and

been to all the states. They have

also gone on a couple of cruises

and traveled to Thailand and

France. Dianne and Marv, thank

you for all you do for our church

family. You are a blessing.

Custodian Position Our faithful, longtime custodian David Meisener is going to be retiring soon (again!). While he may still be

around to unlock and lock the building for us and to take care of some miscellaneous tasks, we need to

find someone to replace him who has knowledge of building systems, will monitor the maintenance needs

of our property inside and out, be available to set up tables and chairs, clean the buildings (offices,

Sanctuary, Hicks Hall and educational building) take care of trash and recycling, and be a generally

helpful and cheerful presence around the church! While that‘s a tall order, we‘re praying there is

someone out there that you may know who would be interested in joining the RUMC team. We would

consider separating the cleaning responsibilities into a second position. If you know of someone, or if you

are that someone, please visit the office to fill out an application and provide a resume. We look forward

to celebrating Dave‘s long years of service at a later date.

Birthdays

We would like for you to get to know the Wengelewskis. Christine grew up in the Amboy and Dixon area. Bill grew up in Chicago. They met at DePaul University. Bill was part of the move-in crew that helped Christine move in. They were both Psychology and Religous Studies Majors in College. They married in 1998 at Resurrection Center in Woodstock where Christine worked as a retreat leader. Bill worked for the Department of Natural Resources for 8 years (IL Beach State Park and Starved Rock) before becoming a teacher in 2005. Christine got her Master's in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University and began her career as a Counselor in 2001.

Bill and Christine have three children/ Ben and Liam are little miracles, born November 5th, 2003 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee. They were having trouble with growth in-utero so Christine was hospitalized at 25 weeks. The boy's heart rates decelerated dangerously low, and Christine was prepared for delivery 7 different times between 25 weeks and 31 weeks because the Dr.'s thought the babies were not going to

survive in the womb. They had family and friends all over the country praying for them. Even the doctors were amazed that she carried the boys to 32 weeks and how healthy the boys were at birth. The boys were breathing on their own and had no bleeding in the brain. Liam was born weighing 1 lb. 14 ounces and 13 inches long. Ben weighed 3 lbs. 3 oz and was 15 inches long. Ben was in the NICU for 4 weeks and Liam for 7 weeks until they were big enough to come home. Liam got to come home even though he wasn't quite 4 lbs. for Christmas Eve.

On the day they brought Ben home from the hospital, Bill was offered the opportunity to transfer from Illinois Beach State Park to Starved Rock. They had just one day to decide if they would move their family. A big part of the decision to relocate was the support of Christine‘s family. They were very supportive making the drive to Milwaukee every week to see her during the stress of the hospitalization and they felt the twins needed to be closer to relatives.

They moved from Kenosha, Wisconsin to a house on the Starved Rock property with their tiny twins in January of 2004. Bill only worked at Starved Rock for a year when he got laid off due to the State's budget cuts. Because their house was part of the job, they had to move. Bill began a Master's program though Rockford College that was geared to help working professionals to transition into teaching. In 2005, they moved to Rochelle. They chose Rochelle because it is between Rockford, where Bill had begun teaching, and Mendota Community Hospital, where Christine was working as a

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

On December 30th, 2010, they had their third miracle baby, Lillian Joy, weighing 7 lbs., 14 ounces, 20 inches long. Lily continues to amaze us each day with her quick wit and joyful laughter.

They tried a few other churches, but found a home at Rochelle United Methodist Church because they liked the music, the message and contemporary worship style of The Gathering. RUMC has been a blessing to them especially when Matt and Rebekah and the Youth fixed their porch and built a deck for them. As a family that had been through so much, it really meant a lot to them that a group from the church would reach out to them in that way. That act of kindness renewed our faith after what seemed like many challenges they had faced, and helped them want to share their faith with others, too.

At RUMC, Bill enjoys leading worship music at The Gathering twice a month. Christine participates in several small group bible studies and has lead service projects such as the Easter Baskets for the home-bound, the Positive Impact Group, and the Bowl-a-Thon for Aaliyah Hillyer's assistance dog. Ben and Liam share their gift of music in the Youth Choir and they love to help Mark Ackland with the audio-visual equipment for The Gathering. Lily enjoys Sunday School and playing with the many friends she has made. Thank you Wengelewski family for being such a blessing to us here at RUMC.

This month I would like to

share with you a little about

Ashley MacTaggart. Ashley

lives with her grandparents

Clarence and Jean

MacTaggart. She is the

youngest of four sisters,

Melissa (28), Shannon (22)

and Sarah (17). Ashley started

coming to this church when

she was in the Kindergarten

and has been coming ever

since.

Ashley is in her Sophomore

year at RTHS.

This year she decided to join

the high school band, and she

plays the clarinet. She really

enjoyed the marching band

competitions, but she wasn‘t a

big fan of having to get up an

extra hour early for band

practice during the fall.

in school is English because she

enjoys writing and the teacher

makes the class a lot of fun.

After high school she would like

to attend the University of Illinois

and pursue a degree in

neurology.

One thing Ashley likes about our

church is that people aren‘t

afraid to laugh and enjoy

themselves while there. A

second thing she likes is how our

church is like a big family when

we pass the peace of Christ with

one another.

We are very blessed to have

Ashley in our church family.

area. Bring your rake and join us in

the Gathering service at 12:00pm

on Sunday, November 16th.

Lunch will be provided before we

begin. Remember to bring your

own rake and change of clothes to

church on that day.

Imagine No Malaria Fast

November 7-8

Unlike many other diseases that are awaiting a cure,

malaria was eliminated in the U.S. in the 1950s.

However, in Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria continues to kill a person every

60 seconds. But there is hope! Imagine No Malaria is part of a global

partnership and together with our partners, our generation can beat

malaria once and for all. We, as United Methodists, are committed to

bring an end to death and suffering from malaria.

As a youth group we are going to fast for 28 hours to help bring

awareness to this cause as well as raise money to help beat malaria!

We will start our fast on Friday, November 7th at 1:00pm and we will

end the fast the next day at 5:00pm. During this time we will pray, learn

more about this deadly disease and continue in our fundraising efforts.

This is a great opportunity to join with others around the world and

make a difference.
