A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORGreetings from the Recreation Department,

I hope you have all enjoyed the leisure time and activities that summer affords. A good book in a hammock, or a plunge in the lake on a hot summer day, can’t be beat. How about some fresh sweet corn, blueberries, or a juicy peach? They all remind me “That Life is Good!” Here at the Rec. Dept. we have enjoyed great music at our concert series, great participation in our swim lessons, bike camp, and Ashford Adventurers Camp! The 300th anniversary events have also added much to our small town community spirit!

Remember, Recreation Commission Meetings are on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m, in the Recreation Office. John Boiano is our chairperson and is supported by Kim Ayers, Sandra Moquin, Garth Bean and Dan Kehoe. We are interested in your input and involvement! Please call or stop in at a meeting if you have an idea, a program or a project you would like considered. We are often looking for some additional volunteer help at some of our special events. This is a great way to get to know the Commissioners. Extra hands are needed at the Ashford Metric Century Bike Ride, 9/28, the Halloween Party, 10/24, and our Carol Sing, 12/7. Please give us a call if you’d like to be involved. at 860-487-4409.

Now, it’s time to shift gears into all that Fall brings, so read on. If you’ll check out all the special events, trips and programs your Rec. Dept has to offer, and register early, then, we will keep on.

Building Community through People, Parks, and Programs!

September 16Fer de Lance by Rex Stout As any herpetologist will tell you, the fer-de-lance is among the most dreaded snakes known to man. When someone makes a present of one to Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin knows he’s getting dreadfully close to solving the devilishly clever murders of an immigrant

Social Servicesand a college president. As for Wolfe, he’s playing snake charmer, in a case with more twists than an anaconda -- whistling a seductive tune, he hopes will catch a killer who’s still got poison in his heart.

October 21Outrageby Arnaldur IndridasonHaunted by personal demons, Detective Erlendur decides to take a short leave

of absence, putting his female assistant, Elínborg, in charge while he is gone. When a disturbing case lands on her desk, Elínborg is quickly thrust into a world of violent crime.

The murdered man turns out to be a serial rapist, and Elínborg must overcome her feelings of disgust for the victim if she wants to catch his killer before he strikes again.

November 18Last Refugeby Chris KnopfSam Acquillo is at the end of the line. A middle-aged corporate dropout living in his dead parents ramshackle cottage in the Hamptons, Sam has abandoned his friends, family and a big-time career to sit on his porch, drink vodka and stare at the Little Peconic Bay. But, when the old lady next door ends up floating dead in her bathtub, it seems like Sam is the only one who wonders why. Burned-out, busted up and cynical, the ex-engineer, ex-professional boxer, ex-loving father and husband, finds himself uncovering secrets no one could have imagined, least of all Sam, himself. Meanwhile, a procession of quirky characters intrudes on Sam’s misanthropic ways. A beautiful banker, pot-smoking lawyer, bug-eyed fisherman and gay billionaire join a full complement of cops, thugs and local luminaries in this tale of money and murder.
