    PREFACE

This volume of the annual hydrologic data report of Massachusetts and Rhode Island is one of a series of annual reports that document hydrologic data gathered from the U.S Geological Surveys surface- and ground-water data-collection networks in each State, Puerto Rico, and the Trust Territories. These records of streamflow, ground-water levels, and quality of water provide the hydrologic information needed by State, local, and Federal agencies, and the private sector for developing and managing our Nations land and water resources. Hydrologic data for Massachusetts and Rhode Island are contained in one volume. This report is the culmination of a concerted effort by dedicated personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey who collected, compiled, analyzed, verified, and organized the data, and who typed, edited, and assembled the report. In addition to the authors, who had primary responsibility for assuring that the information contained herein is accurate, complete, and adheres to Geological Survey policy and established guidelines, the following individuals contributed significantly to the collection, processing, and tabulation of the data:

Kimberly W. Campo Britt O. StockLinda Y. Comeau Joan S. WhitleyTimothy R. Driskell Joseph F. WhitleyCharles R. Leighton Dennis J. VentetuoloDomenic Murino, Jr. Joseph L. ZancaLansen R. Ramsbey

Anne M. Weaver was responsible for the word processing and publishing phases of the report, Mark V. Bonito prepared the illustrations, and Matthew G. Cooke provided the editorial review.

This report was prepared in cooperation with the States of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and with other agencies under the general supervision of Wayne H. Sonntag, MassachusettsRhode Island District Chief, and James B. Campbell, Subdistrict Chief, Rhode Island Office.

    13. ABSTRACT (Maximum 200 words)

Water resources data for the 2001 water year for Massachusetts and Rhode Island consists of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; contents of lakes and reservoirs; and water levels of ground-water wells. This report contains dis-charge records for 93 gaging stations, stage records at 1 gaging station, monthend contents of 4 lakes and reservoirs, water quality for 31 gaging stations, water levels for 139 observation wells, ground-water quality for 24 water-supply wells, and stage records for 1 pond. Miscellaneous hydrologic data were collected at various sites that were not a part of the systematic data-collection program and are published as miscellaneous discharge measurements and miscellaneous surface-water-quality data. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperat-ing State and Federal agencies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

  • Water Resources Data for

    Massachusetts and Rhode Island, 2001

By R.S. Socolow, C.R. Leighton, J.F. Whitley, and D.J. Ventetuolo

    INTRODUCTION

The Water Resources Discipline of the U.S. GeologicalSurvey (USGS), in cooperation with State agencies, obtains alarge amount of data pertaining to the water resources ofMassachusetts and Rhode Island each water year. These data, accumulated during many water years, constitute a valuabledata base for developing an improved understanding of thewater resources of the States. To make these data readily avail-able to interested parties outside the Geological Survey, thedata are published annually in this report series entitled WaterResources Data-Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Hydrologic data are also available through the Massachu-settsRhode Island District Home Page on the World WideWeb (http://ma.water.usgs.gov). Historical data and real-timedata (for sites equipped with satellite gage-height telemeter)are also available. The home page also contains a link to theU.S. Geological Survey National Home Page where stream-flow data from locations throughout the United States can beretrieved. Please be advised that hydrographs for surface-water discharge stations and ground-water-level observationwells, published in the MassachusettsRhode Island AnnualWater Data Report for water year 2000, are not included in thisprinted edition. However, improved versions of these hydro-graphs are now available on-line in page-sized pdf format forwater year 2001 through the USGS Web page at:http://water.usgs.gov/pubs/wdr/.

This report series includes records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; contents of lakes and reservoirs;and water levels of ground-water wells. This volume containsdischarge records for 93 gaging stations; stage records for 1gaging station; month-end contents of 4 lakes and reservoirs;water quality for 31 gaging stations; water levels for 139observation wells; ground-water quality for 24 water-supplywells; and stage records for 1 pond. Locations of these sitesare shown in figures 1 and 2. Short-term water-quality datawere collected at 26 gaging stations and are shown in figure 3.Locations of ground-water-quality sites are not shown forhomeland security reasons. Hydrologic data were collected atmany sites that were not involved in the systematic data-col-lection program and are published as miscellaneous dischargemeasurements, miscellaneous surface-water-quality, and mis-cellaneous ground-water-quality data. The data in this report

represent that part of the National Water Data System operatedby the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State andFederal agencies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

This series of annual reports for Massachusetts andRhode Island began with the 1961 water year with a report thatcontained only data relating to the quantities of surface water. For the 1964 water year, a similar report was introduced thatcontained only data relating to water quality. Beginning withthe 1975 water year, the report format was changed to present,in one volume, data on quantities of surface water, quality ofsurface and ground water, and ground-water levels.

Prior to introduction of this series and for several wateryears concurrent with it, water-resources data for Massachu-setts and Rhode Island were published in U.S. GeologicalSurvey Water-Supply Papers. Data on stream discharge andstage and on lake or reservoir contents and stage, throughSeptember 1960, were published annually under the titleSurface-Water Supply of the United States, Parts 1A and 1B.For the 1961 through 1970 water years, the data were pub-lished in two 5-year reports. Data on chemical quality, temper-ature, and suspended sediment for the 1941 through 1970water years were published annually under the title Qualityof Surface Waters of the United States, and water levels forthe 1939 through 1974 water years were published under thetitle Ground-Water Levels in the United States. The abovementioned Water-Supply Papers may be consulted in thelibraries of the principal cities of the United States and may bepurchased from U.S. Geological Survey, InformationServices, Box 25286, Denver Federal Center, Box 25425,Denver, CO 80225-0286.

Publications similar to this report are published annuallyby the USGS for all States. These official Survey reports havean identification number consisting of the two-letter Stateabbreviation, the last two digits of the water year, and thevolume number. For example, this volume is identified asU.S. Geological Survey Water-Data Report MA-RI-01-1.For archiving and general distribution, the reports for 197174water years also are identified as water-data reports. Thesewater-data reports are for sale in paper copy or in microficheby the National Technical Information Service, U.S. Depart-ment of Commerce, Springfield, VA 22161. Additional infor-mation, including current prices, for ordering specific reportsmay be obtained from the District Office at the address givenon the back of the title page or by telephone (800) 696-4042.

Assistance in the form of funds or services was given bythe Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, in collecting records forthree gaging stations published in the report. Assistance in theform of services was given by the Cape Cod Commission,Barnstable County, Nantucket Land Council, NantucketCounty, and Cooperative Extension, Marthas Vineyard,Dukes County, Massachusetts, in measuring observationwells on Cape Cod, Nantucket Island, and Marthas VineyardIsland, Massachusetts.

    SUMMARY OF HYDROLOGIC CONDITIONS

    Streamflow

Runoff for the 2001 water year was generally normal(between the lowest 25 percent of record and highest 25percent of record) at stations in Massachusetts and RhodeIsland. Runoff was above normal (highest 25 percent ofrecord) for eastern Massachusetts and all of Rhode Islandin March, all of Massachusetts and Rhode Island in April, and western and eastern Massachusetts and northernRhode Island in June. Annual peak flows occurred primarilyduring storms on December 17 and from April 10 through 15at most sites in west-central and western Massachusetts.

Annual peak flows occurred during the two weeks fromMarch 22 to April 4 in central and eastern Massachusetts andall of Rhode Island. The March-to-April peak-flow eventresulted from a combination of approximately 5 inches ofrainfall onto a snow pack that ranged from approximately 24to 36 inches deep in Massachusetts to approximately 12 to 24inches deep in Rhode Island. New peak flows for period-of-station records were recorded at two stations with fiveor more years of record (Ipswich River at South Middleton,MA, operated since June 1938; and Aberjona River atWinchester, MA, operated since April 1939. Peak flows atboth stations indicated recurrence intervals of 100 years. Atable showing peak-flow information for those stations ineastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island most affected by theMarch flood appears in the Floods section following theGround-Water Levels section.

Monthly and yearly discharges for the 2001 water year, and median monthly and yearly discharges for the 30-yearreference period 19712000, for three index gaging stationsare compared in figure 4. Maps showing monthly surface-water conditions during the 2001 water year in Massachusettsand Rhode Island are shown in figure 5. The maps show areasof normal, above-normal (within the highest 25 percent ofrecord), or below-normal (within the lowest 25 percent ofrecord) runoff for each month an
