Welcome to Your NationalWildlife Refuge SystemI am pleased that you are visiting one of ourNational Wildlife Refuges. The National WildlifeRefuge System provides the opportunity to see aneagle soar, watch a buffalo roam, or fish in a pristinestream. The magnificence of the great outdoorsoffers treasured experiences and memories.
There are more than 500 National Wildlife Refugesthroughout the United States. There is at least onerefuge within an hour’s drive of most major cities. At a refuge, you can learn about our environment, take a friend hunting or fishing, or snap pictures of wildlife. I am proud to be one of nearly 40 millionAmericans who visit National Wildlife Refuges
each year. During your visit, I hope you enjoy the best of wild America.
Why Wildlife Refuges? The National WildlifeRefuge System is the onlynetwork of federal landsdedicated specifically towildlife conservation.Home to more than 700 types of birds, 220 different mammals,250 reptiles, and morethan 200 kinds of fish, theamazing variety of wildlifefound on refuges reflectsAmerica’s bountifulnatural heritage. Manywildlife refuges were created to protect andenhance the resting and feeding grounds ofmigratory birds, creating a chain of steppingstones along major migration routes. Otherswere established to conserve the naturalhomes of our rarest wild species, includingbald eagles, bison, and whooping cranes.
In southern wildlife refuges, peaceful coastalbackwaters and bayous provide importantspawning areas for fish. Countless shallow pondsand marshes in the Upper Midwest, createdthousands of years ago by receding glaciers, arenow prairie “pothole” refuges, critical forwaterfowl as well as wildflowers. In the Northeast,a variety of unique wetlands and forests providehavens for songbirds, waterfowl, whitetail deer, and a multitude of small game. The rich grasslandsand mountain streams of western wildlife refugesoffer magnificent scenery for viewing elk, cutthroattrout, and sandhill cranes. Alaska refuges’ vasthorizons are home to more than 12 million ducks, geese, and swans each summer, and host the mostvibrant salmon runs, the world’s largest brownbears, and magnificent herds of caribou.
A hundred years in the making, the NationalWildlife Refuge System is a network of carefullychosen habitats that support abundant wildlife, protect a healthy environment, and provideunparalleled outdoor experiences for all Americans.
America’s Best Kept SecretNational wildlife refuges are far more than havensfor wild plants and animals. In fact, visitors—nearly40 million each year—are welcome on 98 percent ofwildlife refuge land. Visitors join in a variety ofoutdoor activities, especially hunting, fishing, wildlifeobservation, photography, interpretation, andenvironmental education.
Wildlife refuges host recreational hunters at morethan 300 locations and welcome anglers at morethan 260—a testament to the abundant wildliferesulting from successful conservation andmanagement programs. Birdwatchers from aroundthe globe visit wildlife refuges to be awed byamazing congregations of our feathered friends, numbering in the tens of thousands at peakmigration in many locations. And there’s no betterplace than wildlife refuges for children and adultsalike to learn about the natural world. More than230 wildlife refuges attract visitors with innovativeeducational programs showing how we managerefuges to ensure that future generations canexperience America’s wildness. Still, the discoveryopportunities don’t end with wildlife. Wildliferefuges also protect important historic sites, fromNative American campsites to World War IIartifacts, preserving interesting facets of theAmerican culture.
Watch wildlife from a distance. When you approach a wild animal,it may defend itself, or flee but from
a distance you can see its natural behavior.
Caring for Wildlife and Their SurroundingsFor millennia, America’s wildlife thrived in naturalsurroundings stretching across millions of acres.Areas that in recent times have been reduced to a fraction of their original size—but are still crucial to the survival of wild species—require active, consistent, research-based management. TheNational Wildlife Refuge System oversees theworld’s most comprehensive wildlife managementprograms, combining biological research andmonitoring with strategic habitat management. In Alaska for example, brown bears are fitted withglobal positioning system collars to track theirmovement. We build secure floating nests on theCalifornia coast to attract and protect rare light-
footed clapper rails during breeding andnesting season. Periodic burning,
grazing, or harvesting of grasslandsstimulates plant growth providingfood and cover for elk, endangeredAttwater prairie chickens, andwaterfowl alike.
“Wake up with the birds.”Arrive in the early morning
(or late afternoon) whenwildlife is most active.
Sometimes thebest managementis doing nothing atall. Within theNational WildlifeRefuge System, 21 million acres of wilderness—an area larger
than the states of Rhode Island, Connecticut,Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and New Jerseycombined—allow species as diverse as Floridapanthers and barren-ground caribou to survive inundisturbed surroundings.
Contact the wildlife refuge beforeyou visit for up-to-date information
on access, special activities, weather conditions, and more.

Gale A. NortonSecretary of the Interior
From the Smallest Beginning . . . President Theodore Rooseveltestablished the first wildlife refuge in1903, Florida’s 3-acre Pelican Island, to
protect egrets, herons, and otherbirds from market hunters whokilled these birds by the thousandsto satisfy turn-of-the-century
fashion demands. From this humblebeginning, Americans have embraced the concept ofproviding unique places for wildlife to flourish, whilealso allowing for many forms of wildlife dependentrecreation. Through cooperative efforts with a growingnumber of partners and committed citizens, theNational Wildlife Refuge System has become a modelof stewardship where all Americans and Internationalvisitors can enjoy our precious natural resources.
As you spend time learning about the NationalWildlife Refuge System, take a moment to thank themillions of volunteers, hunters, anglers, and otherconservationists that help us continue America’swildlife heritage. Enjoy your visit!
