What is the Fulbright Foreign Student Program?

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables Algerians to pursue graduate level study in

the United States and build leadership skills. It also promotes mutual understanding.

Programs are only for Master degrees. The program generally runs from 6 months to a

year.

Who can apply?

To participate in the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, the applicant must have

completed their undergraduate education and hold a degree equivalent to a bachelor’s

degree. Applicants should generally have strong academic qualifications and personal

leadership ability.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholars Program enables Algerian scholars and researchers to

lecture and/or conduct research at U.S. universities and institutions in a myriad of

disciplines for a half or full academic year. (i.e. English, Media, Economy,…etc)

Who can apply?

To participate in the Fulbright Visiting Scholars Program, the applicant must have a

doctoral degree or equivalent professional training or experience at the time of

application. The applicant must have proficiency in English as well. Applicants should

generally have strong academic qualifications and personal leadership ability.

What is the Foreign Language Teacher Assistant Program?

The Fulbright FLTA Program provides young teachers of English as a Foreign Language the

opportunity to refine their teaching skills and broaden their knowledge of American

cultures and customs while strengthening the instruction of foreign languages at colleges

and universities in the United States. The Foreign Language Teacher Assistant program

promotes the learning of critical need foreign languages in American universities.

Participants teach Arabic in American universities and take graduate-level English and

American studies courses.

Who can apply?

To participate in the FLTA Program, the applicant must have completed undergraduate

education and hold a degree equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. Applicants should be

Algerian citizens between the ages of 21-29 who are: English language teachers with a

bachelor’s degree, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) graduate students, or

English language teachers holding a Master’s degree.

What is the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program?

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides 10 months of professional enrichment and non-degree graduate-level study in the United States for accomplished mid-level professionals from designated countries. The fellows are placed in groups by professional field at selected U.S. universities offering specially designed programs of study and training

Who can apply?

Applicants to the Humphrey Fellowship should have an undergraduate degree and a minimum of five years of full-time, professional experience. Applicants should have limited or no prior experience in the United States. The Program looks for applicants with demonstrated leadership qualities and a record of public service in the community. Applicants should have proficient English language ability.

What is the Study of the United States Institutes for Secondary Educators?

The SUSI Program for Secondary Educators provides two multinational groups of 30 secondary educators (English teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, ministry of education officials, etc.) with a deeper understanding of U.S. society, education, and culture, past and present. Through a combination of traditional, multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, the programs elucidate the history and evolution of U.S. educational institutions and values.

Who can apply?

Applicants should be mid-career, likely between the ages of 30-45, highly motivated and experienced secondary school educators. Applicants should have English language fluency. Preference is given to applicants who have strong plans to enhance and/or develop courses with a U.S. studies component and who have strong academic and professional credentials. Preference is also given to applicants who have limited or no experience in the United States.

What is the Study of the United States Institutes for Scholars?

Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars are designed to strengthen curricula and improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions overseas. Foreign university faculty, secondary educators and other scholars spend approximately four weeks at host universities where they take part in a series of lectures, seminar discussions and site visits related to each institute’s theme. Participants spend the remaining two weeks on a study tour, which includes visits to sites of interest in another geographic region of the country. Each institute concludes with several days of meetings and related study in Washington, D.C.

Who can apply?

Applicants to the Study of the United States Institutes for Scholars should be fluent in English. The program is looking for foreign university faculty, secondary educators, or other scholars who have strong academic and professional credentials.

What is TechWomen?

TechWomen pairs women in Silicon Valley with their counterparts in the Middle East and North Africa for a professional mentorship and exchange program at leading technology companies. The TechWomen initiative identifies emerging leaders with expertise in technology to attend a five-week program that includes project-based mentorships at leading companies in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. The women also attend workshops, networking events, a conference, and meetings in Washington, D.C. Participants are women in professional careers that require significant knowledge of and skill in technology.

Who can apply?

Applicants to TechWomen should have an undergraduate degree and a minimum of two years of full-time, professional experience in the STEM fields and/or a field requiring significant technological expertise. Applicants should have proficient English language ability. Preference is given to applicants who have demonstrated leadership abilities in their profession and who have a record of community and/or public service in their community.

What is the MEPI Leaders for Democracy Fellowship Program (U.S.)?

The MEPI Leaders for Democracy Fellowship Program is a 3-month program in the United States for 20-25 young civic leaders from the Middle East and North Africa. The program begins with 5 weeks of academic coursework, where fellows focus on the concepts of leadership, democracy, communication, and conflict resolution, among others. After completing the academic portion of the program, participants engage in a 7-week professional assignment with a political, non-governmental, or public policy organization of professional interest in Washington, D.C.

Who can apply?

The program is open to professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 with a bachelor's degree and English language fluency. Fellows should be able to function at full capacity in an English-speaking academic and professional environment. Applicants should have 5 years of work experience, as well as demonstrated leadership skills

What is the MEPI Leaders for Democracy Fellowship Program (Lebanon)?

The MEPI Leaders for Democracy Fellowship Arabic project provides ten weeks of study and professional experience in Lebanon for 20-25 young civic leaders from across the Middle East and North Africa. The project begins with four weeks of academic coursework in Arabic at the Lebanese American University, where fellows focus on the concepts of leadership, democracy, communication, and conflict resolution. After completing the academic portion of the project, participants engage in a five- to six-week professional assignment with Lebanese civil society institutions and organizations.

Who can apply?

The program is open to professionals between the ages of 25 and 35 with a bachelor's degree and Arabic language fluency. Applicants should have some experience working in civil society, rule of law, human rights, democracy promotion, etc., and have a demonstrated commitment and desire to remain working in this field for the foreseeable future.

What is the TESOL Conference?

Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) funds attendance to the annual TESOL

conference to provide the latest information on English teaching techniques, and opportunities to

present research and network with colleagues. Through the conference, teachers and scholars can

discover and implement ideas from the cutting edge of English language pedagogy.

Who can apply?

The Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Conference occurs at a variable time

each year. The U.S. Embassy chooses to nominate possible conference-goers once these dates have

been set. This variability means that there is no set application or application deadline year-to-year.

Nonetheless, applicants should have strong academic and/or professional credentials as a English

language teacher or as a TESOL graduate student. Applicants should also show a strong willingness to

learn and to implement new ideas in their own classrooms.

Programs that bring US Scholars to Algeria

• The English Language Fellow Program sends U.S. educators in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) on ten-month fellowships.

• The English Language Specialist Program recruits U.S. academics in the fields of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) / Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Applied Linguistics for short-term assignments abroad.

• Fulbright Scholars Program awards grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative two- to six-week projects at eligible institutions worldwide. Projects are encouraged that contribute to the creation of new academic programs or fields of study at host country institutions of higher education

• The E-Teacher Scholarship Program offers online, graduate level classes to English teaching professionals outside of the United States through the University of Oregon.

Programs for Algerians in Algeria

• The English Access Microscholarship Program provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 14 to 18 year-olds from underserved sectors through after-school classes and intensive summer sessions.

• El Amel is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Embassy Algiers and Berlitz which provides free intensive language camps to disadvantaged high school students during school vacation periods.
