The Issue
• Marrow types are hereditary, therefore the best chance for a
matched donor for these patients is a sibling
•
70% of these 30,000 are unable to find a matched donor withintheir family and must find an unrelated donor
MARROW PROGRAM
• Each year, 30,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with
leukemia or one of over 70 other life-threatening blood diseases
• Some are successfully treated with conventional therapy, others
will become candidates for a bone marrow transplant
• The highest likelihood of finding a match is within the same
ethnic group

Why Have a Military Marrow Donor Program?
• Military Personnel meet our Age/Health requirements
• Ethnic and Racial diversity of the military
• Ability to locate military personnel through military locators
and own secure system
• Over 500 DoD members search for an unrelated donor each year
• Contingency support to DoD casualties of marrow toxic agents
(platelets/marrow transplants)
MARROW PROGRAM
• Centralized Command Approval & Support for CommunityDonor Drives
