It is with the utmost pride and excitement that I introduce Urban Ink’s celebratory 15th anniversary season. It’s the most ambitious and wide-reaching season in the company’s history - that reaches local, rural, and national Indigenous and Intercultural communities.

At Urban Ink, we are putting the power in the hands of Indigenous and Intercultural artists to tell their own stories from their own unique voices. Join us this season for four outstanding productions: the powerful story of two remarkable women in Return Home, a workshop production of Children of God in Kamloops, a national tour of our groundbreaking production Sal Capone, and a brand new work by the exciting emerging artists of the Urban Ink Collective in Silenced.

This landmark 15th anniversary season furthers our efforts to promote intercultural understanding, ignite conversation from coast to coast, and celebrate the rich history of this land by bringing communities together in a national conversation that affirms diversity as a shared Canadian value.

I hope you will join us.

A NEW MUSICAL BY COREY PAYETTE

Developed in partnership with Raven Theatre, Western Canada Theatre (Kamloops) in collaboration with English Theatre at Canada’s National Arts Centre and in association with the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc.

Children of God is a musical about an Oji-Cree family whose children were sent to residential school. It takes place in two time periods twenty years apart, and examines how the effects of our past are directly related to our future. To share in what was lost, the pain and anger that still exists in many families from wounds that will not heal. Hopefully, by acknowledging these stories we can move toward accepting the past. Written as a celebration of Indigenous peoples’ never-ending cultural spirit featuring new contemporary dancing, drumming and spirit songs all created to celebrate the characters’ desires to retain their culture.
