It’s not often that a football manager will return to his former stomping

ground. In living memory, Manchester United have never gone back to a former manager. Mind you, Sir Alex Ferguson was their manager for longer than most people on earth have been alive. The same applies to Arsenal, although London rivals Chelsea have gone back recently with the return of José Mourin-ho to Stamford Bridge last season. Mind you, he is The Special One.

Sadly, this rule does not apply to Bafana Bafana.

If you flew off into space in 1992 and only returned to earth in 2014, you would presume that Bafana must have been a staggering success. After all, Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba was the coach of Bafana when you left and he was still in charge when you returned. However, sandwiched inbetween there were 15 other coaches, making a total of 17 in 22 years. United had three manag-ers in that time.

Arsenal have had just 18 coaches in the last 114 years, while Manchester City have had 21 in the time United had 3! Mind you, after the Special One’s couple of glory years at Chelsea, owner Roman Abramovich went on a firing spree, resulting in 10 management changes in the past 10 years. Chelsea enjoyed some good success in that decade, but fans feel they would have achieved more with a greater sense of continuity. As for Bafana, all we’ve done was win the African Nations Cup in ’96. We host-ed the World Cup in 2010, but so gra-cious were we as hosts that we failed to get out of the group stages - and some people doubt we would have played in 2010 were it not for our automatic quali-fication as hosts.

Worst of all, Bafana have had 24 changes of managers in what has become like a magical mystery tour of musical chairs. Mashaba has held the reins 4 times in this 17-year spread. Four times! Surely if you like someone that much you’ll just hold onto him? And if you keep letting him go… then maybe he’s not the one? Others who we’ve repeatedly gone back to are Jomo Sono (3 times), Trott Moloto and Pitso Mosimane (two tours of duty apiece). This constant back and forth be-tween coaches is possibly more worrying than the high number of changes over-all. We seem desperate, as if we don’t have a solution and don’t know where we should be looking for one.

Is it the coaches or the players? If you’re

What would Fergie do with Bafana?

What would Fergie do with Bafana? They say you should never go back, but that doesn’t seem to apply to Bafana Bafana

a Man United fan you’ll know it’s the manager, even though they had some truly great players. So we have to ask: what would Fergie do with Bafana?

All things considered, he would prob-ably say ‘thanks, but no thanks’. He’s got nothing to prove – and it might just be impossible to prove anything with Bafana. Or would it? As long as he had a translator who could help us all under-stand Glaswegian, this is what I think he would do.

First, he would send the Bafana boys a DVD of Fergie’s Greatest Hits. Hit 1 – Cantona past his sell-by date: Out. Hit 2 – Beckham getting too big for his branded boots: Out. Hit 3 – Roy Keane getting too miserable: Out.

Second, he would do it ‘his way’ (see right). If you gave Fergie a sacred cow, he would slaughter it if it was for the good of his team. He’d throttle it with his bare hands if he had to. I think therein lies the problem. Fergie has had years to build a reputation which has given him the time to develop into one of sport’s lasting legacies.

Bafana need to do that. They need to find the right man and put him IN CHARGE and then BACK HIM. Let him mould the team in his own image – for several years. The challenge for the ad-ministrators would be dealing with the internal politics, external politics, social pressure, cultural pressure – crumbs,

HE DID IT HIS

WAY

3

Fergie’s first priority was to bring in young players and build a youth system that could sustain the club for years, rather than signing big name veterans in the hope of short-term success.

Fergie was not afraid to rebuild his team every four years. He made decisions based on what he imagined the team would look like in four years’ time.

He set high standards for himself - and he always held everyone around him to these same high standards. He tells a great anecdote about how meeting high standards can become contagious: “I used to be the first to arrive in the morning. In my later years, a lot of my staff members would already be there when I got in at 7am. I think they understood why I came in early—they knew there was a job to be done.”

5Ferguson says there is no rule about when a manag-er should criticize players and when a manager should encourage players. The situation should dictate the best message to send to your team.

76

Prepare to win and take risks. Fergie’s philosophy is that if you’re down 2-1, you might as well put on an extra of-fensive player and lose 3-1 rather than play conservatively and lose 2-1 anyway.

8

Fergie delegated managing practices to his assistant coaches so that he could simply watch what was going on with each individual player. He said, “I don’t think many people fully understand the value of observing.”

Finally, Fergie says you should never stop adapting. He ex-plains, “I believe that you control change by accepting it.”

sometimes they might even have to deal with soccer-related pressure!

We call on Bafana to blaze us a trail

Bafana have not won anything of substance for almost 20 years so do we really, really, really have anything to lose by taking a long-term gamble? Give The Chosen One the chance to either wreck us or lift us off into a bright new future.SA needs someone who is passionate and who sees it as their calling and who knows they have some time to build something of value. This is the chal-lenge, because the players can’t have belief in themselves if their leader keeps changing. With a strong manager, it allows him to groom a strong onfield leader, like Fergie did with Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, David Beckham. Powerful men, almost like the Clive Lloyd of West Indies cricket.

That’s what Bafana need and, as a football-loving nation, we deserve it. We have great talent and astonishing passion, yet our beautiful national game is being run and ruined by politics – and without a leader.

Sometimes all that’s needed for suc-cess is to make a decision and stick to it – right or wrong. Decide and press forward. If we can do that with a manag-er and a captain then what great glory might be awaiting us? However, if we don’t get it right then the next time we play in the World Cup probably be

in 2204 - when our turn to host the World Cup comes around again!

4Never, ever give control over to anyone else. He says you have to cut loose any employee who is making trouble and trying to take some of your power away, even if he is the best player in the world. And never worry about whether your employees or team members like you.

1 Generally, men are top-of-the-pile kind of people; grabbing what’s visible in the wardrobe. It’s very likely that if you can’t see it, you won’t wear it. The answer to this is to get organized. Give away clothes you have not worn in over a year,

fold t-shirts to make them visible and easy to get to. Hang up your pants, shirts and jackets and keep your belts in view too. Cleaning out your closet and adding a system is your first step to looking great.

The clothing stores you choose should be able to accommodate your style as well as offer up some new, exciting additions to your wardrobe. If you are shopping in the city, choose an area with at least 3 different shops for you to browse. Otherwise, head to a shopping mall that has all you need.

I suggest the following retail stores:

Add some laid-back attitude without looking like you just woke up. Un-tuck your shirt, leaving half still tucked into your trousers or jeans. If you are wearing a stylish leather belt, let a part of it show. Effortless style at its best

HOW TO WEAR IT

Your work-wear, even if it’s a smart suit and tie, is perfect-ly wearable at night too, be confident and rock it! These days you should not have to rush home to change, unless you are in desperate need of a shower/freshen up. Loosen the tie, roll up your sleeves and you are ready to unwind.

JUST THE TIP

Shop your basics at stores like Mr. Price and Ackermans or Pick ‘n Pay clothing

If you find a pair of trousers that fit you perfectly and are comfortable, buy two or even three pairs. Stock up that wardrobe so there is always an outfit in the making.

The End of a GenerationTRASH TALK

The 16 actors being fired from the Generations set will not be bowing

out with much dignity, as their wage strike took a dramatic turn. The soap stars’ demands for higher wages lead to producer Mfundi Vundla’s, rather unexpected, response of booting them all. The 16 contracts were terminated on Monday 18 August, following consulta-tions with the South African Broadcast-ing Corporation (SABC).

With six weeks’ worth of soaps pre-re-corded and in the bag, the team will need to start rubbing heads together to figure out a way of realistically ending the 16 roles on Generations. Soap opera dramas are well-known for the coma patient, horrific car crashes, sudden disappearances of people and scandals, but I am sure we are all wondering how it will play out for the 16 cast members!

The actors released statements after the contract termination, stating that they were disappointed by the response, but intend to fight for fair wages for creative professionals. The actors claim that, despite the show’s popularity (over 7 million viewers a night), they are not treated or paid fairly. The actors are demanding bigger salaries and extended three-year contracts. They also want royalties from episodes that have been rebroadcast, as well as syndication fees resulting from the sale of Generations outside of South Africa. The actors have threatened to go to court if their contracts are terminated on Monday.

According to Sunday World, the SABC rejected the actors’ pay increases which it deems “astronomical”, increasing the wages of long-serving actors from R16 000 to R30 000 per week.To date, the termination of the cast’s contracts have not been reversed, and the demands listed above have not been

addressed by SSMV or SABC. The actors did not return to work and have gone to court over the matter. Whether or not the firing of 16 Generations stars was a mock-charge remains to be seen.

What will the 7 million viewers think in six weeks time when new plot twists emerge? It will be an extreme-soap-ies-throw-down, with fans glued to the TV so as not to miss one of the 16 cast members’ sudden ‘deaths.’

The actors on strike are: Anga Makuba-lo (MJ Dlomo), Atandwa Kani (Samora Lembede), Katlego Danke (Dineo Dlo-mo), Mandla Gaduka (Selwyn “Choppa” Maithufi), Menzi Ngubane (Sbusiso Dlomo), Nambitha Mpumlwana (Mawan-de), Patrick Shai (Patrick Tlaole), Slindile Nodangala (Ruby Dikobe), Sophie Ndaba (Queen Ndaba), Seputla Sebogodi (Ken-neth Mashaba), Thami Mngqolo (Senzo), Thato Molamu (Nicholas Nomvete), Winnie Ntshaba (Khetiwe Buthelezi), Zenande Mfenyana (Noluntu Memela), Zikhona Sodlaka (Priska Nomvete) and Zolisa Xaluva (Jason Malinga).

If you are an avid Generations viewer, you will notice that these are not minor characters, but ones that play a daily role in the world of Generations. Two weeks on from termination, and still no recall or changes to contracts – what will happen in Generations to come?

MMSV Productions’ primetime soap opera Generations has fired 16 cast members for illegal wage strike action

How will the characters be written out?

Queen announces she is really in love with Jason and they run off together

This causes a rift between Queen’s family and Noluntu accepts a job offer overseas while Queen’s now ex is so distraught from the betrayel that he drinks all day, drives and crashes into a bridge, dying.

Dineo sticks to his escape plan and does a serious disappearing act

Queen, who has been wanting to (force/push/get?) Patricia out, is caught out and, to avoid complete embarrassment, resigns and takes an extended “leave of absence.”

Kenneth commits suicide

A work event mishap, bus trip to a client, or weekend workshop gone wrong – crash, 3 killed, 4 comas, 3 so badly injured they resign and leave the city. Comas, death and disability end it all.

Or they find people who look similar to the sacked bunch, and try to trick the viewers into getting used to new faces with the same names, set of problems, treachery and backstabbing.

TRASH TALK

As final farewell, or tribute, to the actors, let’s take a trip down memory lane with 10 moments from Generations worth remembering

better known as ‘the gay kiss’ between Senzo and Jason that lead Senzo’s homophopic father to beat them both senseless, leaving Jason with a concussion.

the one that viewers love to hate was shot by Sarah-Lee, who was once a friend of hers. Ntsiki was paralysed after the shooting.

that time when Khethiwe landed a modelling contract that was cut severly short after Dumisane stabbed her in the face on New Years. As one does.

the time we all remember! Zoleka and Zinzi both fall in love with Archie Moroka. He then married Zoleka, who had a miscarriage, who then asked her twin to swap places with her… being a twin has it’s benefits.

Samuel L. Jackson featured on the show and advised Khethiwe on her drinking problem. Thanks, Samuel.

that time when Mamfundisi tricked old and sick people into transferring money to her for bettering the church… more like bettering her lavish lifestyle. To top it all off, she set the church on fire while it was full of all her followers. Never a dull moment in the twisted lives of Generations stars.

Khensani and her boyfriend Noah are about to tie the knot, but there is a secret that becomes uncovered. Noah is her long-lost twin brother! Say what!? Noah turns to drugs after finding this out.

that episode when Chris Brown was featured and recorded a song with Ajax, who was in hospital after a car accident.

the episode with the messy love affairs is one to remember too; Ntombi, Sibusiso and Karabo. This one sleeps with that one, when that one is actually her man, and they were friends… you remember it right?

that time when Queen had a fling with Archie Moroko, then his brother, Zake Moroka, and then later had a child with the other brother, Terence. If not, why not?

TECH TALK

Bigger is BiggerYou know what they say about big

hands? They can hold the iPhone 6 Plus. This 6.2 inch long slab of alumin-ium has the biggest display, with the thinnest body, found in an iPhone yet. It’s a real man-size phone and it feels good in your hand with the near seam-less case bonding aluminium, stainless steel and glass. Sure, the iPhone 6, at 5.4 inches, might be more conven-iently sized, but you’ve got to super size that thing to get all the real features.

But my thumbs are only so big, I hear you cry.

That’s why Apple upped the reachability on the iPhone 6 Plus, making it easier for you to get to the things you use with the swipe of a thumb. Double tap the home button and everything will inch down, closer to your digit. Just swipe left or right to go back and forward in your browser. They’ve even made the volume

button longer and put the sleep but-ton on the side so it’s within

easy reach.

Nobody needs a heavy phone weighing them down. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are 6.9mm and 7.1mm thin. Everything down to the finest detail has been designed to run smaller, lighter, better.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are coming to the rest of the world on the 19th of September, but we have to wait a little longer with a predicted due date in October/November. Rumours suggest its going to be pricey too (around R12 999 for the 128GB iPhone 6 Plus and R11 999 for the iPhone 6) so it might be time to upgrade that contract.

What’s 6.2 inches and fits snugly in your hand?

Watch this space

The first wearable smart watch from Apple, the Apple Watch connects messages, Facebook updates, simplified apps and Siri to your wrist.

With cellphones getting bigger every year, it’s easy to see why someone might want to stow their phone away in a bag or jacket pocket and let their smart watch do the work.

Simplified apps on the Apple Watch include: iMessages, Health, Calendar, Weather, Mail, Photos, the camera’s Shutter Button and Apple Maps to help you find your way.

The watch’s 38 or 42mm display is surrounded by alloys of stain-less steel and aluminium, making them tough enough for daily wear. Splurge on the 18-karat yellow or rose gold for a premium look.

MONEY

Don’t put all your eggs in one bank

After the banks crashed internationally in 2008 we all now know that it’s no longer safe to put all your eggs in one investment basket. Having learnt that lesson the hard way, wise investors now spread their investments as well as their savings, and even their insurance and retirement planning.

Live on the mild side

It’s only worth making a risky investment if you can really afford to throw that money away without a worry. If you might need that cash to cover some ba-sic costs down the road then just don’t take the risk.

My job’s safe…

If you work for a company there is always the chance that, despite your best efforts, the company could get into trouble or lose a big client and either have to make cutbacks or close up shop. Lose one big client or big deal and you could find yourself at the back of the unemployment queue.

Sowing the SeedsWhether you’re a humble employee or a thriving entrepreneur, we all need to plant the right seeds for

our financial and career success.

Godfrey Madanhire

Plan B for businessman

The most successful entrepreneurs and business owners always keep some-thing in their back pocket, and usually it’s seeds. Not real seeds, but figurative seeds. It’s as if they spend their life dropping these tiny seeds behind them as they go along their merry way. From Branson to Trump to Sexwale, they know that there’s always someone else hungry to take their client or market share away from them. No-one ever rests on their laurels.

Plan E for employee

No longer do people spend decades working at one company and, increasing-ly, less and less people are working for companies. Everyone is moving towards outsourcing and employing freelancers or consultants. Great news: you can now be your own boss. However, you need to tread carefully. Don’t just leap into the world of self-employment because it can be a short trip of a few months in which you can move from being hungry for suc-cess to hungry for bread and water. Build your side businesses or turn hobbies into money making ventures WHILE you are still employed.

TIP It can happen again...

TIP In a dog eat dog world, make sure you have a muzzle in one hand and a gun in the other.

TIP Use your money wisely.

TIPKeep your eyes out for icebergs, be adaptable… and know when to dive into the lifeboats.

Don’t run your business into the ground…

Any business can hit troubled times, but there’s a problem if you ‘run it into the ground’. The problem is in your approach. If things start going wrong you need to address them and refocus, trying something different. Just stubbornly saying “I won’t let this go down” doesn’t help. If it’s a lost cause then knowing when to abandon ship is essential. You can either lose a lot of money or a lot more money.

When do I jump?

Don’t leave a vaguely decent job to be self-employed until such time as you literally can’t afford not to. It’s about the head ruling the heart. Many people are desperate to leave a frustrating or boring job and convince themselves they will make a living from their great new business venture.

You have to let your head rule this decision. You jump into self-employ-ment when you can’t remain any longer in your job. For the entrepreneur, that literally means when you are making so much money that your daytime job is really costing you money.

How are you going to pay for that?

Why is it that some of the richest people pay cash for some things and yet they take other things on terms? Simple, they value their money. They will look for the very best deal on any offer and the one that allows them to use their money in the best way. That’s why some million-aires might buy their next Mercedes cash yet pay for their photocopier over five years. Each decision will be based on the deal on the table.
