You also have the option of installing a wall shelving unit or even floating shelves. They are avail-able in various sizes (length, width and height). That said, regardless of what type of shelf will be best suited to your outside storage area, you need to make sure you know exactly how much weight the individual ledges can hold. Overloading can lead to collapse and dam-aged items.

Hanging Racks2 You can obtain racks that can hang from rafters. This is good for larger items, such as bikes, lawn furni-ture, car tires and other items that can take up valuable floor space.

Hooks or wall tool holders3 Many outdoor tools and equipment, such as rakes, shovels, trimmers, brooms, etc., have handles or ropes that make them easy to hang. You can purchase actual hooks to secure these items, or you can hammer a few nails into the wall to act as simple hangers.

Pegboards4 This is often thought of as being one of the best garage organization ideas. The reason is they are one of the most flexible and low cost functional tools out there. You can easily alter how your garage is arranged by simply changing were you place the pegboards. If you have never seen one of these boards before, what you will find is that they contain many holes where you can place hooks or pegs to hang a variety of things. They are often convenient for work stations as they are ideal for keeping handy tools (ex. hammers, wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, etc.) in order.

Organizing your garage is a good plan because it not only helps you keep things orderly and easy to find, but it is also important for your own safety. However, with a little strategizing you can have the best of all worlds: Turn smaller pieces of your runner-up paper into framed wall art, and hang them against your primary paper, lining up the patterns to match what’s on your wall.

How-to

1 Apply paste and hang your primary wallpaper, if it isn’t already installed.

2 Use blue painter’s tape to temporarily tack up a sheet of the secondary paper where you want to place the frame, making sure to match up the pattern with the primary paper.

3 Hold the frame backing up on the wall and trace around it with a pencil.

4 Remove the secondary paper from the wall, cut out your piece, and insert it into the frame.

5 Use the hanging hardware to carefully place the frame in position over the primary paper.

Curb Appeal101That quality, often called curb appeal, can be somewhat elusive. From a real estate standpoint, curb appeal makes a home more valuable and easier to sell. For a homeowner, it inspires pride.

What about your own home? When you look at it objectively, does it immediately elicit a strong first impression? If not, what is it lacking? Following are some techniques guaranteed to perk up your home’s curb appeal.

Clean up1 This is often one of the least expensive yet most significant things you can do to improve the look of your home. Simply picking up the front yard, putting away un-used items such as lawn furniture or other random items, and cleaning up the driveway can make a world of differ-ence.

Prune and plant2 Cleaning up your landscaping is another relatively easy step. Start by pruning trees and shrubs to enhance their beauty. Then do some planting. Use trees to create majesty and focal points. Tall shrubs can frame and ac-cent interesting features of your house and yard—and conceal unsightly garbage cans and the like. Low plants and ground cover tie everything together. Brightly col-ored flowers in the foreground are a sure way to make a yard look lively.

Wash the siding3 If you can work safely from the ground or a ladder, this is a job you can do yourself; otherwise, call a handy-man or professional pressure-washing service. If doing the cleaning yourself, protect stone and brick walls, patios, and plants with plastic sheeting. Sweep off dirt, working from the eaves to the base. Hose off the walls, again work-ing from the top down. If necessary, scrub with a stiff-bristle brush attached to a long handle, using a mixture of water and non-phosphate detergent. If you decide to use a pressure washer yourself, be very careful to keep the nozzle moving; holding it in one place will remove the paint.

Paint4 If cleaning doesn’t revive your house’s paint job, painting—though relatively expensive—will give you plenty of bang for your buck, transforming your house with an entirely fresh, new look. If painting the siding is a bit beyond your budget right now, consider painting just the trim.

Green up your lawn5 Because a front lawn often carpets much of the front yard, its condition is critical to how a house looks from the street. You can start with regular mowing, raking, edging, weeding, and watering. If necessary, fertilize, de-thatch, or aerate it to get it looking great. The TransformationDécoupage (the art of cutting and pasting paper) turns these plywood and-metal chairs into pretty, one-of-a-kind seats

Getting started1 Lightly sand chair seat and back; wipe clean. Prime using white latex primer.

2 Sand frame, spray-paint with rust paint in colour that coordinates with découpage materials. (We used Krylon Satin in white).

3 Découpage basicsAll it takes is paper, waterbased sealant glue (Mod Podge) and a few finish coats of polyurethane.

4 Use foam paintbrush to coat back of paper with Mod Podge, which goes on milky but dries clear.

5 Place paper on chair. Use foam brush and old credit card to smooth out bubbles.

6 Glue down loose edges by coating with Mod Podge.

7 Allow glued paper to extend past chair edges slightly as you go.

8 Once chair is covered, let glue dry, about 24 hours.

9 Use craft knife to trim along chair edges so paper is flush with edges.

10 Protect chair with multiple coats of Minwax Polycrylic water-based protective finish in clear satin; brush along edges to seal. Allow two hours between coats.

Today’s sheer fabrics come in so many breathtaking patterns. We are taking some of these patterns and finding new ways to use them; one choice is a DIY Fabric screen.Supplies

Directions1 Determine the height and width of your panels, then cut lengths of wood (using mitre box) at 45-degree angle: for each of 3 panels, you need 2 long pieces (for sides) and 2 short pieces (for top and bottom).2 Paint all sides of wood; let dry.3 Fit together mitred corners of top, bottom and side pieces to form 3 rectangular screen panels. Secure corners with white

wood glue and nails; you may want to use a clamp to hold the wood together while drying.4 To determine the fabric measurement, calculate the length and width of one panel, adding three inches to the length and to the width; cut out 3 same-size fabric pieces.5 Lay one fabric piece, pattern side down, on the floor, then lay one wooden frame on top.6 Fold fabric up around frame edges, pulling taut, and staple to back side of frame. Continue stapling sides, top and bottom at 2” intervals. Repeat for remaining frames and panel pieces.7 Trim excess fabric around back edges of frame.8 Screw double-action hinges into long sides of centre panel frame, 2” from top and bottom, and join to each outside panel, making sure all panel fronts face in same direction.
