12 Tips That Will Make Your House ShineSure, you vacuum and do laundry every week. Your tub never has a ring and your stovetop is always shiny. You’re house proud, and why not? Guests always comment on how organized and clean your place is. But this summer, even you can take it up a notch. Here are 12 easy chores that’ll make your home shine.

1 Clean lampshades. Disconnect the lamp and remove the shade. If your shades are simple -- no decorations -- just use a damp cloth to gently wipe the inside and outside. If there are embellishments that need extra attention, use an old toothbrush to get them clean. Wipe down the lamp base and give the cord a once-over, too.2 Wash draperies. For fabric panels: Some can go into the washer; others (like silks and fine fabrics) can be gently vacuumed, brought to the dry cleaner or washed by hand in the sink or tub. For mini-blinds: Cover your hands in a pair of cotton socks. Dip them in warm soapy water and wipe each of the slats clean.3 Clean ceiling fan blades. Climb a ladder and dust ceiling fan blades with a feather duster.4 Dust the baseboards. If a simple dusting doesn’t suffice to remove gathered dust on your baseboards, use a toothbrush to gently scrub them clean. Be careful not to damage the painted walls above. 5 Wipe and disinfect all your doorknobs, light-switch plates and telephones with a damp cloth. Use a damp paintbrush on stereo knobs and to dust its crevices. You can do the same for your remote control.

6 Wash all inside and outside doors with soapy water, remembering to wipe the top edge of the frame7 Clean window screens by removing them and laying them on the ground in the yard. Spray with the garden hose, wipe with a soapy cloth and rinse with the hose. 8 Clean shower curtains. Cloth curtains: Take them down and wash them in the washing machine, then hang them outside to dry. Before hanging them back up in the shower, soak them in salt water to prevent mildew. Plastic curtains: Leave them hanging in the shower and spray the top with your favourite cleaner, letting it run down to cover the entire curtain. Allow cleaner to sit for a few minutes, then rinse with the showerhead or wipe with a sponge.

9 Clean drains. Nothing says summer like a fresh-smelling home, and stale drains can sometimes give off a subtle odour. In the kitchen and bathroom drains, pour about half a box of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a small plate or bowl for a few minutes. Complete the process by run-ning the cold-water tap for a few minutes.10 Clean all filters. Your dehumidifier may be getting a workout this season, as will your central air conditioner and air-purifier unit. Re-move each of those filters and screens, submerge them in water and gently brush with a cloth. Let stand outside to dry before reattaching.11 Disinfect all your garbage cans and recycling bins. Take them outside and douse them with cleaner. Grab a tall, cool drink and call your best friend. When you get off the phone, attack garbage cans with the garden hose. Leave them upside down on the deck and put your feet up until they drip-dry.12 Clean out the kitty litter box. Those plastic buckets, domes, houses and other containers are indestructible, it’s true -- but that doesn’t mean they don’t get filthy. Take the litter box out to the back-yard and hose it down. Soap and water will work wonders.

Have you struggled in trying to get organized? Has something overwhelmed you in your life that has caused you to become disorganized? Are you fairly organized, but have areas where you struggle? Most people fall into one or all of these categories. They try, but never quite succeed to the degree they would like because of the following mistakes: 1. Thinking that clutter is only about the stuff. Clutter also includes things we have started and not yet completed; things not put away or thrown out; possessions we no longer use or are broken; habits we keep repeating that no longer serve a purpose; activities we continue to do because “we have always done it that way”; beliefs we hang onto that are not true; holding on to relationships that haven’t worked for a long time.

2. Buying things without planning ahead as to where they are going to go. Every time you go shopping you should know exactly where the things you are buying are going to live. When items don’t have a permanent home, they just become clutter because they are not where they belong. 3. Disregarding the “one in, one out” rule. When you buy something new, get rid of something else. Remember the 20/80 rule. We wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. We tend to use our favorite things over and over and have others that never see the light of day. Be willing to let those things pass to people who can use them.

4. Buying organizing tools without first sorting and purging in order to plan what will actually be needed. There are steps to follow in the organizing process in order to be successful and buying organizing tools is definitely near the bottom of the list.

5. Diving in without a plan. As with any goal, if you don’t know where you are going, how are you going to get there? You have to have a clear picture in mind of what you want to accomplish and plan out each step you must take to achieve it.

6. Trying to do it all at once. Again, a plan is imperative. Start small and break it down. For example, if you want to organize your office, begin with one desk drawer and don’t let yourself become distracted by the papers that need filing. Stick to the drawer until it is done, then move on.

7. Believing that people have to be born organized and they must love it to be good at it. Organizing is a learned skill like using a fork or typing and the best systems are simple and tailored to your natural tendencies.

8. Believing it will take longer than it really will. No matter how disorganized your space is, chances are it can be organized in a couple of hours at best, or a few days at worst, especially if you have some help.

9. Believing it will all get done in minutes. It didn’t get this way overnight, so it will take some time to set it right. Each item of clutter represents a post-poned decision. Every time you bring something in the house that doesn’t have a permanent home and you just set it down anywhere, you have post-poned deciding if you should keep it and where it should live.

10. Believing that if you hire a professional organizer, they will make you get rid of everything. A professional organizer will help you keep everything that you find beautiful, that you love, and that brings you joy. They will make sure everything is stored properly and according to how often it is used. Also, they know all the best tools and systems and how to tailor them to your needs and will keep things moving so you achieve your goals in record time.

11. BONUS: Underestimating the importance of daily, or at least weekly tidying and de-cluttering routines. 10 minutes of de-cluttering every day will go a long way to getting you on track very quickly without an overwhelming effort as well as maintaining your success once you have achieved your goals.

If you’re preparing your home for sale, there are certain improve-ments that are definitely worth their cost in helping to attract more buyers, sell your home faster, make back most (or all!) of your investment, or even increase the value of your home. 1 Kitchen: A state-of-the-art kitchen is one of the most popular renovations for earning back most, if not all, of its investment. Even if you don’t fully gut and renovate, certain upgrades --granite counters, hardwood or high-end tile floors, premium appliances (especially stainless steel), islands and under mount sinks -- attract attention and can increase value2 Hardwood floors: Especially on the main floor, hardwood is pe-rennially popular with buyers. If your floors are refinished but worn, have them lightly sanded and resealed. If they’re very beaten up consider replacing them.3 Premium broadloom: Broadloom is popular too (especially for bedrooms), but only if in top condition. If it’s worn, soiled or out of fashion, replace it with something more contemporary. Neutral, lightly textured weaves such as wool “sisal” are fashionable right now4 Master ensuite: If your ensuite is a bit tired, it’s worth upgrad-ing, especially if you can afford a few luxuries such as a whirlpool or air jet tub, separate shower with a rainshower head, double sinks and/or heated floors. If you don’t have an ensuite, perhaps you can install one by stealing space from the master bedroom or a room next to it.5 Radiator covers: It’s a simple carpentry job, but makes almost

any older home seem more gracious6 Upgraded lighting: Old-fashioned “can” track lighting can be easily replaced with more contemporary styles such as smaller cans or halogen track lights. Replace dingy overhead lighting with chandeliers (vintage or modern), or install them in rooms that don’t have any.7 A finished basement: After kitchens and bathrooms, a stylishly finished basement is high on many buyers’ wish lists. If the ceiling is low and you can afford the investment, consider digging down to increase ceiling height. If you can’t, levelling the floor and installing broadloom will help make it more comfortable.8 Landscaping: A well-maintained garden with attractive plantings, hardscaping such as brick or flagstone, and features such as urns or paths, add an elegant look to even a smaller home.9 Front porch: Two or three decades ago, tearing off front porches became fashionable in some Canadian cities, but now they’re back in a big way. If you can, add a full front porch (or replace/repair the one you have if it isn’t in top condition); if not, a portico (a smaller porch that shelters the front door) can be a worthy substitute. Or add a deck in the back.10 Adding a bedroom: A four-bedroom house will command a higher price than a three-bedroom, even if they’re both the same size. Consider dividing a large bedroom into two small ones (as long as they’re not too small, or it can have the opposite effect), or alter-natively, consider converting an upstairs den or sitting room.

6 Ways To Make Your Flowers Last Longer1 Fill containers at least three-quarters full so flowers have enough water.2 Use tepid water, not hot or cold. “It relaxes and conditions the flowers, and is especially important if they’ve been out of water for a little while, It revives them.”3 Stir in floral food, or, if you have none on hand, a pinch of sugar. You will definitely see a difference in the longevity of the flowers.4 Refresh water every few days. Divide the flowers and make little arrangements for along the kitchen counter or along the table.6 Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight. Flowers don’t like the heat. But they do like to be somewhere where there’s a lot of natural light.

Types of Irrigation Systems

Drip SystemA drip irrigation system directly waters plants or a tree base by seeping into the roots, and conserves water by watering only each individual item. This system is beneficial in water-ing individual plants in a flower garden or a hedge line of bushes.

Spray HeadThe spray head system is stationary and sprays a fine mist around its circumference over a 4- to 15-foot area. These are beneficial for smaller areas, such as landscaped beds and trees. Spray heads are available in the pop-up style so that they will only rise above the ground when activated.

Anti-SiphonAnti-siphon valves spray water from their sprinkler heads in an area of about 15 to 20 feet, and can be set to spray up to 360 degrees. This is the most common type of irrigation system that you see in residential lawns. Anti-siphon valves are also obtainable in the pop-up style.

Gear DrivenGear driven rotor sprinklers cover the largest areas, water-ing 25 to 60 feet in diameter. They rotate in a circle, with the motion being controlled by the water pressure impacting on the spoon on top. You can use more than one type of sprin-kler to water a lawn, garden, bushes, shrubs and trees.

Caring for the tools that help you through the gardening season is important to ensure they last season after season. Here’s how to keep everything in tip-top condition. Cutting tools: Sticky residues often build up on pruners, shears, loppers and pruning saws. Use a rag dipped in paint thinner to remove the sap and pitch from the blades of these tools. Then, sharpen the blades with a file or wet stone before protecting them from rusting with a spray or wipe of WD-40 oil.Hand tools: Wash trowels, cultivators and other hand tools with soapy water to remove dirt, scrubbing them with a stiff-bristled brush or steel wool to dislodge crusty chunks. Inspect the handles of your tools and re-glue any that have come loose. To prevent them from drying and splitting, give wooden handles a swipe with a rag moistened with linseed oil, removing the excess oil with a clean cloth. Tools with painted handles can be touched up if necessary, or coated with brightly coloured paint that’s easy to spot in the garden.Hoses and sprinklers: To guard against splitting and cracking, drain all hoses before storing them coiled on a flat surface – hoses hung on nails might cause the hose to crack where it bends. Drain and turn off outside taps to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting. Large tools: Clean large tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes and edgers with soapy water, removing crusted soil with a wire brush or steel wool. Sharpen the blades of digging tools – they’ll perform much better with sharp edges. Wipe or spray metal parts with WD-40 to prevent rusting. Rub linseed oil into wooden handles to prevent drying and splitting, finishing with a swipe of a dry cloth to remove excess oil that makes the handle sticky to the touch.
