Statement of Significance:

Goddard Cottage c1853 is reputedly the oldest building in Uralla. It has hip front verandah while the c1880s has a skillion verandah. The two modest colonial style cottages have steep pitch roofs. There are high local social values that ensured their reconstruction and relocation. It is highly contributory on the streetscape and a member of a group various period houses

Historical Notes or Provenance:

Reputedly Uralla’s oldest house circa 1853. The building facing the street was originally sited with its verandah aligned to the footpath of what was then the main Northern Road. In 1988 due to its deteriorated state, it was carefully dismantled by Kent Mayo and rebuilt on this site. The boundaries of the present front lawn are formed by the huge adzed tree trunks that were the original cottage footings. The other cottage, sited at right angles, dates from c1880s and relocated from a rural property by Peter Myers in 1980. Henry Sheldon Goddard once lived here. Goddard came to Uralla to install machinery in McCrossin’s Mill.

Statement of Significance:

St Elmo is a substantial brick building in a Victorian Gothic style of 1867-1868. Within the grounds is an early pool, diving board and changing rooms, located along the Park Street boundary. Its heavily wooded surrounding inspires curiosity. It has historic associations with the provision of health services as Uralla Private Hospital and the first publicly accessible swimming pool 1941 to 1966. Despite its seclusion, it is highly contributory to Uralla. The property has historic associations, social, research, aesthetic and representative values.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

During the 19th century the building served as the public school, a private residence, a Hospital, a Private Hotel and more lately a Private Residence..

The original school building was built by Alexander Mitchell for the local school board patrons, to a design supplied by the State Education Department in 1867-1868. It was described as a brick building with high gable and decorative fascia boards.

were entertained by the Armidale Band. It was established by Sister McMaugh, who acquired the property then carried out extensive improvements with Mr W. Buttersworth undertaking the work. During his speech General Fox referred to the nursing skills of Sister McMaugh. It was during the war that he was under her care. The Reverend Canon Riley of Armidale also stated the Sir Charles represented the Army, Sister McMaugh the nursing branches of the forces and he himself the navy.

The Uralla Times, 14 October 1937 reported that contractors Vickery Bros were undertaking extensive additions to St. Elmo Hospital. Ms McMaugh, described as diminutive yet assertive, later ran it as a private hotel.

In October 1941 the new swimming baths run by Matron McMaugh of St Elmo Private Hospital located opposite the school was opened. At the time the headmaster stated in the Uralla Times, 6 November 1941 that the baths ‘were opened with most of the School in attendance. Sad to state the deep end was deserted by most of our members as there were many who cannot swim’. The school intended to overcome this problem with regular swimming classes on Wednesday and Friday with fifty pupils to attend a Christmas Vacation Swimming School. The school also planned to have a Swimming Carnival in the following year. The initial carnival was held on 30 March 1942. Changing rooms were erected along the Park St boundary for convenience for the school opposite.

Swimming changed again in Uralla when the new swimming pool was opened on Saturday 12 November 1966. The Minister for Public Works and Member for Armidale Mr Davis Hughes, unveiled the plaque set into a granite boulder in the south-west corner of the pool grounds. Once the pool was opened students had the opportunity to swim on sport’s afternoons and intensive swimming courses were introduced. In 1967 a Swimming Club was formed and members gathered at the pool early each morning; but this new swimming pool was brought about the demise of St Elmo pool and its diving board.

Further Comments:

Criteria a) St Elmo is historically important because of the part played in the growth of Uralla. Unlike ‘Maroubra’ and ’Elmhurst’, which specifically catered for 'lying-in' maternity patients, St Elmo provided general hospital services

Criteria c) Aesthetically with only its roofs visible, its Gothic forms and heavily wooded grounds despite its corner lot location, it arouses curiosity

Criteria d) Much social significance arises from the use of this building and complex as a school, a private residence, a private hospital and a private hotel. Many residents can remember Matron McMaugh and her contribution to the health and leisure well being of Uralla.

Criteria e) The architectural detail of this building provides the opportunity to research the changing functions of the building.

Criteria g) The development of the former school and later private residence as a private hospital by an army nurse is representative of a community person to provide health services to a small community.

Criteria f) It is rare that such an early building has survived and has combined many uses including a school and principla's residence, a private residence a, private hospital and later a private hotel.

Integrity / Intactness:

Criteria b) There are local historic associations with the provision of public education, the provision of health care services in Uralla and with Matron McMaugh who not ran a hospital but also a private hotel.

clad in corrugated profile metal. The same form is echoed to the rear and in between is an external brick chimney. The verandah is supported by plain square timber posts and has a timber floor. Originally symmetrically with traditional 4 panel front door and to north side is a timber sash window, each with 6 panes. Infill of the front verandah to gain additional floorspace is understandable but unfortunate in this location. Walls appear to be vertical dressed timber sheets with external battens, which may overlie more historic materials. Along the north side boundary are concrete vehicle strips. Now with a simple timber frame low fence with wire infill and rose arch over the similar front gate. The site has high visibility being opposite the Central School. The property is well maintained Modifications: French doors in the north side elevation and part infill of front verandah
