This course will help students understand the approaches and strategies of primary health care (PHC) in Colombia. Theories that are central to PHC, its methodologies and the location-specific application of PHC will be explored to address important issues such as intersectoral coordination, social participation, environment, community organizing and participation, family and community outreach and the challenges to human talent, among other issues. The course allows students to engage in dialogue with experts and permits them to gain first-hand work experience from healthcare programs in urban and rural settings.

PRIMARY HEALTH CARE IN COLOMBIA: EXPERIENCES FROM WORKING IN URBAN AND RURAL AREASDate: June 18 to June 27, 2018Language: Spanish

The course is an introduction to the theory and empirics of urban economics. Topics include the benefits and cost of cities, conceptualized as agglomeration economies and congestion costs, the role of amenities, and the role of policies that aim to affect the cities’ land use, transportation and housing. The course highlights the application of these topics to developing countries, including Colombia.”

URBAN ECONOMICSDate: July 9 to July 13, 2018 Language: English

VENEZUELA: STATE IN CRISISDate: July 16 to August 3, 2018Language: Spanish

The framework of the Peace Accords between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) is aimed at establishing “stable and lasting” peace. The challenges and issues to implementing this process are great, however; especially in regard to the daily implementation of it by citizens. This course seeks to provide students with the educational tools for developing the skills that can be used to build a culture of peace in specific contexts (local, regional, professional, etc.). It offers these tools under the guiding lens of the ideas and discussions surrounding the following topics: armed conflict, transitional justice, historical memory, and regional peace, among other issues.

CONCEPTS AND TOOLS FOR BUILDING A CULTURE OF PEACEDate: July 16 to August 6, 2018Language: Spanish

Considered to be the action of abusing a privileged position for a private interest in exchange for compensation or benefits to both parties, corrup-tion is a problem that is not only endemic to Latin American countries, it also affects developed countries. There are two different manifestations of it that are important to distinguish: the abuse of power and abuse of authority. The impact of corruption is equated with poverty (due to its negative impact on economic development), it is an impediment to the provision of social services and it affects the areas of infrastructure and public services.
