Set Your Sights High by Clay Angle, Curtis High School teacher and coach

It is on nights like this, when we have the opportunity to acknowledge the positive accomplishments of a fine group of young people, that I take great pride in being an educator. This is the first of many steps. Your next steps will vary dramatically. Some of our graduates have concrete plans while others are uncertain. I have three pieces of advice that I hope you will consider as you go forward. #1 Seek goals for which you have a passion and you’ll be more likely to achieve them.#2 Set your goals high and the rewards will be greater.

On behalf of myself and the entire senior class, I would like to thank our families for their constant support throughout this tu-multuous time in our lives. As we stand on the threshold of our future and celebrate our long awaited com-mencement, we can truly realize our accom-plishment for the feat that it is. This year, UPSD’s Teacher of the Year is vision specialist Lynnda Biek, who works in Special Education. Biek received the award in recognition of her exemplary service in working with the visually impaired students in the UPSD schools. “Lynnda’s selection acknowledges the importance of a non-traditional teaching assignment,” said Andrew Eyres, director of Teaching and Learning. “Working with the visually impaired de-mands a commitment that extends far beyond the perceived job requirements.” Biek has been with UPSD for the past 12 years, and presently serves nine visually impaired students in the system. Her relation-ship with her students is intense and demanding, and unlike the classroom teacher’s experience, extends well beyond a single school year. For example, she has been working with one of her high school students since kindergarten. She must assess their individual and special needs, and then devise the necessary aid or assistance for each student to ensure their success in school. “It’s a creative challenge every day,” said Biek.

Throughout our history youth have provided the social conscience for our nation. Many times young people have become involved in events that changed our nation. It takes young people to see the inequalities in our society and to address them.

It has been an honor to teach and coach you. We wish you the best.

Malcolm Brownonce said, “A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.” What he failed to mention was that stealing is illegal regardless of your education level. So you may want to think twice before accepting that advice. It might feel like it’s time to leave the nest but if this new healthcare bill passes, you can stay on your parent's health insurance until the age of 26. I wish you all the best as we enter this next chapter in our lives. Thank you for the memories. Congratulations!
