Our first take on CSAT-2014
A Premier exam conducting antlority like UPSC is known for its surprises and this year was of no exception. Last 3 year
trend has been broken as there were no decision-making question, Bilingual Comprehension were of varied subjects and werelengthy.
In the Numerical & Logical Reasoing few questions were tricky rest all manageable. Calculation based knowledge and fast
reading technique is definitely required to handle these questions. Critical Reasoning questions are turning out to be key diffrentiat
or with few figure based puzzle questions. All in all it was a mix of average, easy and difficult questions and a sincere, hard
working student would not have find it difficult but compared to last 3 year CSAT paper this year was slightly tricky if not
difficult.

8 × 9 × 7 = 504 seconds
After every 504 seconds bullets will be fired together.
in 1 hour or 3600 seconds bullets will be fired together
3600504
times
= 7.35 times.
Hence, (b) is the correct option.
7. Let the number of children in first row be, x
x + x – 3 + x – 6 ..... = 630
or n
2x (n 1)d 3602
where n = no. of rows
x = no. of children is first row, d = –3
Now, solving through putting (n = 3, 4 or 5)we will get an integer solution of x, but not for n = 6
Hence, (d) is the correct option.
8. Clearly, E and F cannot be at the bottom of the ladder as

52. In the first paragraph it is written that debate is on free
market operations and its ability for self correction. Thus,
apologists try to defend this face value of free market
operations. Both (a) and (c) are in this direction, but no
control of government authorities seems out of the
periphery of passage. Hence, (c) is the correct option.
53. Ideological bias opposed by apologists by their
assumption of unregulated market is fair. ideological
bias conveys that there is a general thinking that free
market is not fair. Apologists also believe that private
greed is good or biased which is ultimately against the
ideological bias that private greed is not good. Thus, we
can say that ‘ideological bias’ as far as free market is
concerned that the free market is neither fair nor biased.
Hence, (d) is the correct option.

enforcing competition policies not availability of an
effective one now. Thus, (4) ruled out. Hence, (b) is the
correct option.
56. Private sector does not enter rural roads as tolling is not
viable or not having enough money as an incentive for
private sector. Thus, rural road should be the doman of
public sector. Hence, (b) is the correct option.

government, it should be in various sector. Hence, (c) is
the correct option.

All in all it was a mix of average, easy and difficult questions and a sincere, hard
working student would not have find it difficult but compared to last 3 year CSAT paper this year was slightly tricky if not
difficult.

1. Second paragraph is talking about possible loss of genetic
resources and species and decrease in ecosystem services.
Thus, (1) is correct as some endemic species are
vulnerable but not whole ecosystem. Hence, (a) is the
correct option.
2. Contemporary conservation is required for natural
adjustments to climate change. (a) is man made problem,
(c) and (b) are more general in its definition. Though
they are correct but not related with question. Hence, (d)
is the correct option.
3. Through out the passage, author is carrying forward two
themes climate change and Himalayan ecosystem. Hence,

applies to education, health, employment and wages as
well. Hence, (c) is the correct option.
7. Concept of public expenditure is not discussed. (1), (3)
and (4) are directly discussed in the passage. Hence, (c)
is the correct option.
8. As per the passage, state should have the least
intervention. Hence, (b) is the correct option.
9. Clear observation of graph suggests 1996. Hence, (b) is
the correct answer.
10. (c)
11. (d)
12. For (B) it is steady from 1997 to 1998 and goes increasing
afterwards.
Hence, graph is non-decreasing or (b) is the correct
option.

52. Mentioned line in the question do not question mark
capitalism and not glorify it. Thus, (1) and (3) ruled out.
(4) is more co-related. Hence, (d) is the correct option.
53. State plays an important role in India’s industrialization.
Thus, (1) ruled out. Public sector puts up less than
satisfactory performance. Thus, (2) is correct. Passagesuggests about availability of broad social base for
expanding entrepreneurship not in private sector
expansion. Thus, (3) ruled out. Passage is taking about
enforcing competition policies not availability of an
effective one now. Thus, (4) ruled out. Hence, (b) is the
correct option.
54. Private sector does not enter rural roads as tolling is not
viable or not having enough money as an incentive for
private sector. Thus, rural road should be the doman of
public sector. Hence, (b) is the correct option.
55. Portfolio composition should not be static for
government, it should be in various sector. Hence, (c) is
the correct option.

Medieval Modern
Now, GH and FE are likeable groups.
Last year question was A (Medieval), so this year it has
to be Modern.

36 35 33 30 26 21 15 8 0 = 9 points
0 and 36 will not be counted, Thus, we left total 16 points,
but 15 and 21 are repeated. These points should be
counted only once.
[1 3 6 10 15 21 28 35 33 30 26 8]
Total 12 points are counted. Hence, (b) is the correct
option.
78. Using Successive % change formula.

Hence, (c) is the correct option.

the final merit list to decide cut off for prelims-CSE 2014.
All in all it was a mix of average, easy and difficult questions and a sincere, hard
working student would not have find it difficult but compared to last 3 year CSAT paper this year was slightly tricky if not
difficult.

1. In the first paragraph it is written that debate is on free
market operations and its ability for self correction. Thus, apologists try to defend this face value of free market
operations. Both (a) and (c) are in this direction, but no
control of government authorities seems out of the
periphery of passage. Hence, (c) is the correct option.
3. Mentioned line in the question do not question mark
capitalism and not glorify it. Thus, (1) and (3) ruled out.
(4) is more co-related. Hence, (d) is the correct option.
4. State plays an important role in India’s industrialization.
Thus, (1) ruled out. Public sector puts up less than
satisfactory performance. Thus, (2) is correct. Passage
suggests about availability of broad social base for
expanding entrepreneurship not in private sector
expansion. Thus, (3) ruled out. Passage is taking about
enforcing competition policies not availability of an
effective one now. Thus, (4) ruled out. Hence, (b) is the
correct option.
5. Private sector does not enter rural roads as tolling is not
viable or not having enough money as an incentive for
private sector. Thus, rural road should be the doman of
public sector. Hence, (b) is the correct option.
6. Portfolio composition should not be static for
government, it should be in various sector. Hence, (c) is
the correct option.

7. Last paragraph is suggesting that government agency act
as a regulator (umpire) and private sector as players.
Either (a) or (d) should be correct. Option (a) seems more
relevant as it is co-related with the passage theme. Hence,
(a) is the correct option.
8. ABCD EFGH
Medieval Modern
Now, GH and FE are likeable groups.
Last year question was A (Medieval), so this year it has
to be Modern.
Paper setter does not like to ask question from F but since
he like F which means he like E as well.
Therefore most likeable question would be from E.
Hence, (b) is the correct option.
9. Follow the truth Table,
Dancers Vocal Musicians Actress Violinists
Girija × ×
Varaja ×
Jalaja × ×
Shailaja × ×
Tanuja ×
Pooja × ×
4 Dancers, 4 Vocal Musicians, 1 Actress and 3 Violinists
According to Questions use need 3 violinists of which
Girija and Varaja already confirmed. Among Jalaja,
Varaja, Shailaja and Tanuja, two are violinists but Jalaja
and Shailaja cannot be violinists, so we left with Tanuja
who is also a Dancer. Hence, (d) is the correct answer.
10. P-T = 5 or T-P = 5
But, since P = 4
T-P = 5 or T = 9
Now, T is maximum value of all the Alphabets given.

All in all it was a mix of average, easy and difficult questions and a sincere, hard
working student would not have find it difficult but compared to last 3 year CSAT paper this year was slightly tricky if not
difficult.
