  • The historical township of Murrurundi is the most northerntown in the Upper Hunter located one hour south ofTamworth. It is a delightful town on the edge of the LiverpoolRange and Pages River, 44 kilometres north of Scone in abreath takingly natural environment. It boasts naturalbeauty, rich farming land, a thriving art community andplenty of country character.

    Wingen is a small village situated on the New EnglandHighway between Scone and Murrurundi. It features thenearby Wingen Maid and Burning Mountain Nature Reserve,as well as a number of historic homesteads.

    Scone is a thriving town that lies two hours north ofNewcastle as one of the hubs of Upper Hunter Country.Known as the Horse Capital of Australia, the rural town issurrounded by prestigious thoroughbred horse studs and isalso rich in agricultural and industrial enterprises. Scone isthe central town in the northern part of the Upper HunterCountry region.

    MurrurundiGundy is a small village located about 20 kilometres east ofScone. It boasts the popular Linga Longa Inn and also has ageneral store to cater for your travelling needs.

    Moonan Flat is a small village in the east of the Upper HunterShire area nestled in the wilderness of the Barrington Topsregion. Home to the historic Victoria Hotel, the village ischaracterised by its caring community and is a great stopoff point on the journey from the Hunter to Gloucester viathe Barrington Tops scenic drive.

    Aberdeen is located on the New England Highwaybetween Scone and Muswellbrook. With more than 175years history the small town is a great place to take a breakwith a famous pie shop, plenty of amenities, petrol stationsand more. Steeped in Scottish heritage, it has real characternot to be missed.

    The original custodians of Upper Hunter Countrywere the Wanaruah Local Aboriginal people.

    The Wanaruah people have lived on the landfrom the Liverpool Ranges in the north to thesouth at Wollombi and out to Merriwa in the westand the Barrington Tops in the east,encompassing Upper Hunter Country.

    Upper Hunter Country Tourism acknowledges theclose connection between the local Aboriginalpeople, their descendants and the local area.

  • Muswellbrook sits next to the Hunter River and Muscle Creek,260 kilometres north west of Sydney, midway betweenNewcastle and Tamworth and serving as a junction for roadand rail transport. The economic opportunities in industryand the modern facilities offered to service the UpperHunter contribute to the flourishing attractiveness ofMuswellbrook.     Sandy Hollow is a friendly rural village based in the west ofthe region between Denman and Merriwa. Located at thejunction of the Golden Highway and the Bylong Valley Wayit is a great place to stop over and enjoy the naturallandscape and conveniences of country living.

    Merriwa is the largest town in the west of the Upper HunterCountry region. It lies on the Golden Highway approximatelytwo hours from Tamworth in the north, Newcastle in thesouth and Mudgee and Dubbo further west. Steeped insheep farming history, it has plenty of old colonialatmosphere and picnic areas for stop overs.

    Cassilis is a small heritage listed village located west ofMerriwa. Just off the Golden Highway, the locality is one ofAustralias first Golden Fleece Treasure Boxes.

  • Vintage cars have become the new fad in theHunter with many motoring enthusiasts takinggreat pride in showcasing their historic gloryannually at the Aberdeen Big Boys Toys andFamily Day. Designed as a day for men to gettogether and show off their toys from vintagecars to motorcycles, boats and trucks, the eventhas now grown into a massive attraction for thewhole family.

    There are jumping castles, side shows and facepainting for the children, and a growing range ofmarket stalls for the ladies. You can even grab asnapshot of the Aberdeen area in a joy flight withHunter Valley Helicopters.

    FestivalsA good country experience is neverhard to find in Upper Hunter Countryand none is better than seeing thetraditional country capability of manand horse together. This is witnessedeach year at the King of the RangesStockmans Challenge.

    Now also incorporating a bushfestival with damper cooking,poetry, whip cracking, liveentertainment and much more, thechallenge itself is a not to be missedextravaganza. Its held on the firstweekend in May at the start of theScone and Upper Hunter HorseFestival, providing a showcase of thetop stockmen, women and childrenfrom across Australia with their horsescompleting challenges such as crosscountry, horse shoeing, whipcracking, bareback obstacle,packhorse and stock handling andthe exciting finals of a wild horsecatch and stock saddle buckjump.

    The sound of bagpipesfills the atmosphere withtrue Scottish heritage inAberdeen each Julywhen the ever popularAberdeen HighlandGames is launched. Thetraditional event seesmass pipe bands travelfrom across the state totake part in a grandparade and the festivitiesof the day.

    Hundreds of market stallsline the outskirts ofHarrison Oval at JeffersonPark and people travelfrom near and far to packin and have a taste ofScottish dancing, tartanwarrior strong manevents, tug o warnational titles, childrensraces and more in a realceltic scene.

    Numerous events takeplace throughout theweekend, including aceilidh on the Saturdayevening and a Kirkin ofthe Tartan on the Sunday.Recognised as one of thefour flagship events in theUpper Hunter Shire, thegames are held on thefirst weekend in July.

  • In May each year Denman hosts the Upper Hunter Wine andFood Affair, known as the Hunter Valleys Best Street Party.It attracts thousands of people and offers world renownedUpper Hunter wines, gourmet street and take-home food,free live bands, street theatre, and entertainment forchildren. Denman and Sandy Hollow also host popularCharity Horse Rides.

    Muswellbrook hosts many annual events and festivals thatcelebrate the local and Upper Hunter communitys historyand culture throughout the year including MuswellbrookCarnivale, Upper Hunter Show, St Heliers Heavy Horse FieldDays and the Blue Heeler Film Festival.

    Muswellbrook Golf Clubs Spring Festival of Golf includes theBlack Coal Cup among others and Muswellbrook Race Clubin addition to the annual racing calendar hosts the Carnivalof Cups in Spring. The Global Village Motorfest and Fair alsoattracts huge crowds in November.

    The St Heliers Heavy Horse Field Days is one of the maneevents on the Muswellbrook Carnivale in Spring program,which takes place in August every year.

    The family-orientated affair at the St Heliers exhibitiongrounds, Sandy Creek Road, Muswellbrook, is a greatweekend for those with an interest in breeds likeClydesdales, Shires, Percherons and Draught Horses.

    For the heavy horse owner, the competition highlightsinclude led, ridden, slide and long rein, ploughing andcarriage events.

    There are stall holders selling arts and craft, antiques, heavyhorse harness and memorabilia with plenty of food outletsto keep your hunger satisfied over the weekend.

    With a community bonfire on the Saturday night, plusunpowered on-site camping sites available for the traveller,you can now make a weekend of it.

    If you are inquisitive about seeingsheep scampering along a mainthoroughfare in red socks, then satisfyyour curiosity at the Merriwa Festivalof the Fleeces.

    One of the major attractions in theUpper Hunter, the action-packedJune long weekend event starts onthe Friday night, allowing for a fullprogram, which includes cart derby,sheep dog trials, yarn spinning,quilting exhibitions, amusement rides,billy boiling, market stalls, crafts,agricultural displays, shearingcompetition and lots more.

    Saturdays activities wrap up with aspectacular fireworks display from6pm.

    The Festival of the Fleeces began in1990 to commemorate the townsinvolvement within the Australianwool industry. It has since gone from strength-to-strength.

    The big drawcard, however, is theflock of sheep, fully adorned in redsocks, leading the Saturday paradedown Bettington Street in Merriwa.Its a festival to experience truecountry hospitality - and one not tobe missed.

    Visitors who have a soft spot for small endangered cuddlyanimals can embark on a sight-seeing adventure into thewilderness at Tomalla and witness nature first hand at DevilArk.

    The Tasmanian Devilconservation park is home tomany devils, including a hostof cute babies that are bredon site in the hills of theBarrington Tops. Devil Ark wasestablished by the AustralianReptile Park director JohnWeigel and otherconservationists as a safe siteto continue breeding theTasmanian Devil and preventits extinction from thedisastrous Devil Facial TumourDisease.

    The first of its kind of insurancebreeding project, it hasalready seen a boom in thecute little creatures withalmost 200 healthy devils. Fully escorted two and a half hourtours are available running from September to May eachyear and includes a rare chance to witness wild devils intheir natural habitat of the free range enclosures.

    Upper Hunter Country is renowned for its thoroughbredracing industry with Scone boasting the reputation of beingthe Horse Capital of Australia.

    Numerous million dollar thoroughbred racing enterprises aresituated throughout the region standing as the homes to thefuture champions of the industry.

    With about 100 studs spread across the region, Upper HunterCountry is the second largest thoroughbred breeding regionin the world.

    Each year thoroughbred breeders, trainers and jockeysconverge on the Scone Race Course for the annual twoday Scone Cup Carnival which has grown into one of thebiggest country provincial racing meets on the Racing NSWcalendar.

    Scenic drives

    From Scone, turn off the NewEngland Highway at thesouthern end of town ontoGundy Road. Detour - Lake Glenbawn (5km) -a 24 km circular detour viaGlenbawn Road /Allan BridgeRoad/ Segenhoe Road will takeyou past Glenbawn Dam, anumber of famous horse studsand over the historic AllenSuspension Bridge.

    Gundy (20km) - a tiny ruralvillage with toilet facilities,childrens playground, rest area,full camping facilities at theshowground, a general storewith petrol, ice and eftpos, anda pub. Belltrees (35km) -excellent view of the Belltrees 44stand shearing shed designed by

    Horbury Hunt. Glimpses of thebeautiful homestead can alsobe seen.Hunter Road follows the riverthrough predominantly beefcattle properties to Moonan Flat(52 km) tiny rural village, ageneral store and a pub. Walk across the suspension footbridge over the Hunter River andyou will discover picnic areas on the river bank.

    Follow the Hunter River alongHunter Road and turn right ontoTomalla Road (65km), whichclimbs from the Hunter River tothe Barrington Tops Plateau. From the plateau there will bespectacular views acrossEllerston Station to the GreatDividing Range.

    Scone - Gundy - Belltrees - Moonan Flat - Barrington TopsCircuit - Moonan - Scone

    210km - 3.5 hours

    (104kms gravel road, suitable for all vehicles) (In winter,some roads within the Barrington Tops National Park maybe closed temporarily by snow - check with Scone VisitorInformation Centre, the National Parks and WildlifeService or the police if any doubt)

  • Turn right onto Pheasant Creek Road (81km) through theBarrington Tops State Conservation Area and BarringtonTops State Forest and continue left at the Pheasant CreekRoad/Tubrabucca Road intersection (86km).

    Continue left on Pheasant Creek Road through the forest toHenrys Bridge (89km) over the Manning River. A spacious picnic area is located beside the river.Pheasant Creek Road/Dilgry Circle intersection (94km), turnleft onto the Dilgry Circle. Continue through the forest to Banksia Picnic Area (101km).Follow the dirt track upstream for 100m to discover ashaded, secluded picnic area. Great place to have lunch. Continue, turning right at the Dilgry Circle/Barrington TopsForest Road intersection (105km) onto Barrington Tops ForestRoad.

    Continue west to Honey Suckle Picnic Area (108km) [andPheasant Creek Rd intersection]. The picnic area features a 25 minute one kilometre walkingloop through a temperate rainforest of Antarctic Beech andtree ferns, Devils Hole Lookout and Picnic Area (122km).Follow the short paved path, suitable for wheel chairs, to thelookout platform.

    A magnificent vista over the Wilderness Area to theGloucester Tops section of the National Park and beyond.Polblue Swamp Picnic and Camping Area (129km), PolblueCreek winds through the sphagnum swamp. Enjoy a three kilometre walk around these highlandwetlands.

    The First Picnic Area (138km) is a short, five minute loop walkthrough the pine forest with a good chance of seeing Lyrebirds along the way to the Dingo Gate Picnic Area (140km). The Moonan Lookout provides spectacular views to theSouth towards Wollemi National Park. From the Dingo Gate there is a long winding decent toMoonan Brook. There are breathtaking views at almost every turn MoonanBrook Road {152km) Turn right. The road to the left follows Moonan Brook to the village - anold gold mining area.Moonan Brook Road/Hunter Road intersection (157km), turnleft to return to Scone.

    Murrurundi - historic railway town; Murrurundi VisitorInformation Centre (VIC) has information about localhistory. Travel south on the New England Highway, past EmiratesPark Stud to Blandford (6km) - tiny village. Timor Road (turnoff opposite school) passes through horsestuds and grazing properties to Timor T-intersection (27km)with Waverley Road.

    Turn right (for short detour to Timor Caves turn left).The road has four kilometres of tar, the 23km gravel and thenfour kilometres of tar. Follows the Isis Valley past historic Waverley Station, horsestuds and Waverly Polo Fields to Hunter Road T-intersection(57km).

    Turn right (0.5km on right across river is the historichomestead of Elmswood) to Gundy (61km) - rural villagewith toilet facilities, a general store and a pub. Continue on along Pages River past more horse studs andlucerne flats of Segenhoe.

    Detour - Lake Glenbawn (72km) - picnic area, toilets, kioskScone (80km) - Turn right at intersection with New EnglandHighway. (Turn left to travel on down the Hunter Valley toAberdeen - Muswellbrook - Singleton).At the roundabout turn left towards Merriwa. At next roundabout turn right onto Middlebrook Road(82km) grazing properties and horse studs to the sandstoneescarpments of Towarri National Park (89km) camping area- barbecues, picnic area and toilets.

  • Travel one kilometre further along theMiddlebrook Road to the Washpools(90km) picnic area, barbecues, toiletsand long narrow rock pools wheresheep used to be washed beforeshearing.

    Retrace about 4-5km alongMiddlebrook Road to turn left ontoCressfield Road and then left again atthe New England Highway to Wingen(106km) - a rural village with hotel,antique shop, behind is the WingenMaid rock formation, and on toBurning Mountain Nature Reserve(108km) - picnic area, toilets, short walkto viewing platform, then continuingalong the New England Highway toMurrurundi.

    From Muswellbrook, head westalong the Denman Road to PukaraEstate Olive Grove (14km), whereyou can taste the crisp flavours of theirlocal olives, olive oils and a range ofgourmet products at the modern tast-ing rooms and caf set amongst26,000 olive trees on the 80 hectare

    property. On the Golden Highway,Cruickshanks Estate Wines cellar door(21km) is just around the corner. Therugged mountains to the south areguarded by sandstone cliffs of theancient Wollemi National Park, part ofGreater Blue Mountains World HeritageArea.

    Travel past the magnificent WoodlandsStud to Hollydene Estates ArrowfieldVineyard (46km). Take a break atArrowfield Winery. The view fromArrowfields Cellar Door of the HunterValley looking across Arrowfield vine-yard and the adjoining Coolmore Studis one of the must see views of ourregion.

    Continue onto Jerrys Plains(50km). Thearea was set-tled in theearly 1820s. Inthe historicvillage anumber of

    historic buildings dating back to themid-1800s remain intact. There is acaf, tavern and toilet facilities.

    From Jerrys Plains, take the BureenRoad, a quiet country drive throughbush and farm land to the Martindalearea and to Two Rivers Wines (79km),where the owners have been produc-

    ing fine wine for many years.

    Two Rivers is on the edge of Denman(80km) - a small, quaint country townwhere excellent food for lunch can befound. There are two pubs, club, cafesand a bakery. Denman is the home ofthe fabulous Upper Hunter Wine &Food Affair held on the first Saturday ofMay each year.

    Leaving Denman take the RosemountRoad. This loop takes you through vine-yards along the Goulburn River andbushland adjoining the WollemiNational Park; past the oldRosemount Estate which producedfine wine as far back as 1863.Turn left onto the Golden Highway(92km) past farms, vineyards and horsestuds.

    Approaching Sandy Hollow - a tinyrural village with David Mahonys artgallery and sculpture park, pub andtoilet facilities. Consider turning left andtaking the Sandy Hollow Circular DriveTour detour. You can take in thebeauty of the Bylong Valley Way,Baerami, Widden Valley, GoulburnRiver National Park and Merriwadistrict. This would add about two hoursdriving time to your trip or consider twoshort detours before taking theWybong Road: a 20km detour alongthe Bylong Valley Way to James EstateWinery and back to the GoldenHighway.

    Alternatively, turn right onto Wybong Road(98km) which travels through bush andfarmland. En route call into the YarramanEstate Winery. Follow the Wybong Roadback to Muswellbrook (150km) and finishyour day with a visit to Hunter Belle CheeseFactory or relax at one of the pubs orclubs.

    Start at Sandy Hollow a small ruralvillage, with many vineyards and horsestuds, it was put on the map by theinfamous Sandy Hollow railway being builtduring the 1930s depression. It remainedunfinished until the 1980s, when the linewas completed to allow shipment of coalfrom Ulan to the port at Newcastle. Have acoffee at David Mahonys Gallery beforeheading east along Golden Highway andturn right onto Bylong Valley Way (1km).

    Drive along Bylong Valley Way and crossthe bridge over the Goulburn River. Thiswas built in the 1950s to replace the oldbridge destroyed by flooding in 1955.
