SYMANTEC VISION 2012

A significant structural change in NetBackup 7.5

• Problem

– Over the last few releases new features have been added

– Image metadata has been split across two databases

– This impacts performance and scalability

– It also prevents us from adding further new features

• Solution

– We need to put all the image metadata into a single location

– We’re doing this in NetBackup 7.5

– Conversion occurs as part of the upgrade process

IM B11 – Upgrading to NetBackup 7.5 4

Catalog conversion?

Please! No!

Not NetBackup 6.0 all over again!

SYMANTEC VISION 2012 IM B11 – Upgrading to NetBackup 7.5 6

Not this time...

We’ll show you how.

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Catalog conversion occurs at upgrade

• Catalog conversion occurs after the upgrade completes

• Conversion occurs in two “phases” which run in parallel – Phase 1

• Initiated automatically when the upgrade completes

• Migrates SLP controlled images and DSSU controlled images

– Phase 2

• Initiated automatically as part of the regular cleanup job

• Migrates image metadata and removes old files from image database

• Can be manually initiated with the command:

bpimage –cleanup –allclients

• The conversion process has been extensively tested with “real” catalogs containing up to 10,000,000 images

The Performance Benefits: NetBackup 7.5 vs. 7.1

Examples of performance improvements seen in testing*

Hot Catalog Backup is Faster (26%)

Catalog Restore is Faster (47%)

Catalog cleanup is faster (96%)

bpimagelist queries are faster (29%)

bpverify is faster (19%)

image expiration is faster (10 – 92%)

MSDP job throughput is slightly improved (7%)

Best practice

Upgrading to 7.5 – The DOs and DON’Ts

IM B11 – Upgrading to NetBackup 7.5 10

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Considerations when planning your upgrade

Determine the number of images in the catalog

Minimize SLP back log

Reduce DSSU content (if possible flush DSSUs)

Tune Sybase (server.conf)

Disable OpsCenter data collection

Disable backups and restores (if possible)

If you have a large catalog (> 1,000,000 images) use the “Guided” conversion method

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5198

IM B11 – Upgrading to NetBackup 7.5 11

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Catalog Conversion – Things to Avoid

• Do not run catalog backups while migration is in progress

• Do not run OpsCenter data collection while migration is in progress

• Minimize the use of query commands etc. while migration is in progress

• Minimize the running of backups and restore while migration is in progress

– During Phase 1 migration Capacity managed duplication and DSSU staging won’t run

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5198

IM B11 – Upgrading to NetBackup 7.5 12

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Catalog Migration – Can I see it running?

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5198

IM B11 – Upgrading to NetBackup 7.5 13

Phase 2 migration can be seen in the cleanup job in the job monitor

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Catalog Migration – how do I know it’s completed?

• For Phase 1 migration use the nbemmcmd –listsettings on the master server – Phase 1 migration has completed when SLP_DSSU_MIGRATION_STATE is set to "1"

• For Phase 2 migration check the value of LIST_FS_IMAGE_HEADERS in the bp.conf file or registry using the command bpgetconfig LIST_FS_IMAGE_HEADERS – Phase 2 migration has completed when LIST_FS_IMAGE_HEADERS is set

to “NO”

• For clusters the phase 2 migration must be complete for every member node.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5198

IM B11 – Upgrading to NetBackup 7.5 14

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Catalog Migration – Frequently asked questions

• What if my catalog is inconsistent?

– Corrupt image headers will be moved to the db.corrupt directory

– These images will not be migrated

• How can I tell how far the migration has got?

– The activity monitor displays the progress as each client is processed

• Can I stop the phase 2 migration and restart it?

– The cleanup job that is migrating the images can be cancelled and the next cleanup job will continue where it left off

– The customer can also manually start a cleanup job

Known issues/considerations around the upgrade

• Know your 7.5 Upgrade order: – OpsCenter.... then Master.... then Media.... then Clients.

• SLP/DSSU not starting or failing after upgrade – Upgrade to 7.5.0.1 removes this issue

• Special considerations for clusters – Local clusters explained in DOC5198

– Global clusters explained in HOWTO73064
