Jessica Kates

In honor of the new movie release of Catch ing Fire, I star ted reading The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Coll ins. After devouring the f irst book in a matter of two days, I knew that I was on the bandwagon and there was no gett ing off.

Catch ing F i re is a compel l ing cont inuat ion of The H u nger Ga mes t r i logy. Th i s book p i cks u p r i g h t where the f i rst book lef t of f . Af ter winn ing the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta l ive their l ives as any other victors of the games. What they don’ t know is that their victory wil l spark an uprising of rebel l ion aga inst the cap i ta l th roughout the 12 distr icts and the odds will not be in their favor. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the book that wi l l keep you on the edge of your seat. By thelast chapter you wi l l have gone th rough a whole range of emotions. This book will leave you wanting more and luckily there’s still another book that awaits you. Like Eff ie Trinket says, “May the odds be ever in your favor.”

Losing Sleep Over

Losing Sleep?Dr. Razavi Has Solutions

A nyone losing sleep over loss of sleep is not worrying without reason. Sleep deprivation can lead to a host of medical problems from irritability, memory loss, impaired metabolism, a weakened cardiovascular system and, in the worst case scenarios, early death.

Dr. Mehrdad Razavi, a board certified neurologist and sleep specialist, has dedicated the last 10 years of his professional life to finding solutions to problems associated with sleep disorders. He is the Medical Director of Sleep Diagnostics in Chico, Paradise and Yuba City. He is also partnered with Dr. Richard Knudsen a Board Certified Pediatric Sleep Specialist from Paradise.

For the longest time, Chico had only sleep apnea testing facilities (IDTF), but not a Comprehensive Sleep Center, where the focus is not just on testing, but rather on treatment and longitudinal care of these patients. For the first time, we offer such a center. Dr. Razavi’s sleep centers offer not only testing and diagnosis, but also treatment and longitudinal care. “For the first time in Chico area, we offer a Comprehensive Sleep Center,” he says, “treating sleep apnea, insomnia, nightmares, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome, as well as pediatric sleep care to help children get off sleeping pills.” Dr. Razavi’s is never happier than when treatment results in getting patients off medications. “Many patients can get off sleeping pills and other drugs they’ve taken for decades,” he says. “Once a month or so, I hit a homerun and get a patient off all their medications. I’m very stubborn. I don’t want to give up until I find the right solution for each patient’s problem.”

“Most sleep disorders are either misdiagnosed or not detected,” Razavi says. “Many patients are just not aware of what is troubling them. The way they are feeling seems normal to them after awhile. Though our bodies relax when we sleep, our brains remain active, processing the data we gathered through the day, organizing it, analyzing it, and storing it. Lack of sleep disrupts this process, so once a sleep disorder is corrected, patients have enhanced mood, better memory, and are generally more pleasant to be around.”

Dr. Razavi is about to launch an Insomnia Clinic, which includes a series of four one-hour treatments for insomnia. “We’ve done these sessions before at our facility in Redding,” he says, “but that service hasn’t been available before in Chico.”

“When we get a referral,” the doctor says, “we do all the legwork on the insurance, minimizing the work for the patient, the referring physician, and their office staff. When I began my practice, I worried about how to charge people who had little money. I decided we’d charge Medicare rates, which are the least costly. That, we hope, will put people at ease about getting the help they need.”

Dr. Razavi’s Comprehensive Sleep Centers have also been chosen for an upcoming research study into issues related to snoring. For the first time, we will bring clinical sleep research trials to Chico.

Visit your local Sleep Diagnostics and start the year refreshed.

MushroomAdventures

Living in an area surrounded by orchards and

farmland, we love to learn about the local farms

and farmers around us. It’s always interesting to

learn about where your food comes from and we

are lucky to live in an area so rich with resources

for growing food. This month we are excited to

look into the world of a man who is making it

possible to bring the farming inside and grow

your own food at home.

I will apologize ahead of time for any bad puns but getting the opportunity to do an article on mushrooms really brings out the “fungi” (or gal) in me. See, it’s happening already. Donald Simoni, began his mushroom adventure in 1996 growing out of a basement garage in San Francisco. As a young boy of 7 years old Don was in a 5 & 10 Cent store with his father. He saw pictures of vegetables on the little packets of seeds for sale. “I asked my father what are those packets? He said they were seeds to grow the type of vegetable pictured on the front. I purchased and planted the seeds and then soon after, a plant grew! I thought, my God this is magic. When I place aseed in the ground and water it, lo and behold: food. Who would have thought it was possible. That was my first experience asa farmer. I was hooked from then on.” Around this time one winter quite a few years back, Don had some time off and decided to

try and grow mushrooms for fun. He joined a local mushroom club and one of the club members taught him some of the techniques for growing. He soon found out he would need more than $400 for a new pressure cooker to continue growing, so Don made a few mushroom kits to sell at the local mushroom fair to make some money. His kits sold incredibly well, and he quickly made the money for his cooker! So began the story of Mushroom Adventures.

Each of Don’s kits contain ev-erything you need for multiple crops for 6 to 12 weeks. You plant the seeds and “shroom” you will have all the mushrooms you could possibly want! There are a variety of types to grow ranging from Portobello, to Oyster, to Dense Whites. Customers absolutely love these kits and describe them as being incredible easy to set up and maintain. Most never want a store bought mushroom again! There is something about watching your own food grow, and we all know eating it fresh is always far more enjoyable.

Now after moving the product portion of their operation to a farm in Marysville, there’s “mushroom” to expand and grow. Large factory style mush-room farms can grow enough mushrooms to wholesale, but the problem with large farms is that they have little control of their product after it is sold. Many times major stores refuse to remove older product from the shelf until it is sold or rotten. Customers unknowingly often get very old mushrooms, Donald says. He recommends storing

Whether you were born and raised in our area, found yourself in Chico for college, or followed a loved one here, it doesn’t take long to realize there is just something about this place. It always draws back those who have left, and holds on to those who have discovered the friendly small-town, big tree way of life. Traffic-stopping pink winter sunsets and slow-paced creek swimming summers are just part of the local charm, and all of us who stick around know we are choosing that warm, comfortable, simple feeling of home over a big city lifestyle.

When Ric Powers, designer at New Again Kitchen & Bath moved here from southern California in 2010, he didn’t know what to expect. He didn’t know he would be quickly accepted and embraced by a community who supports its local businesses, likes to get to know people on a personal level, and holds in high regard art, design and

craftsmanship. When you get to know Ric and the rest of the folks at New Again Kitchen & Bath, it is easy to see why they have so quickly been adopted into the fabric of our community. In a valley full of people who love feeling at home, Ric and his team are here to help bring a special element of individualized design into your home to make it that more specifically tuned in to your comforts and needs.

Although they mean business when they get to work on demo and re-construction, always finishing their jobs incredibly quick so you can enjoy your new living space without the inconveniently lengthy in-between period, they won’t rush you into a decision or roll their eyes at your vision of a dream kitchen. They are friendly, fun to talk to, interested in your vision, and committed to bringing their customers’ dream spaces to life. We have had a great time following their path of beautification through homes in the area, and are impressed by their dedication to always making improvements, both in the homes they work on and in their own craft and service as a business.

With the new year, New Again Kitchen & Bath is getting back to basics-- but don’t worry, they’re not leaving the sparkling granite and seamless construction behind! As they continue to bring design, function and new life into their customers’ homes, they are making an extra effort to genuinely accommodate and appreciate each person they work with and for. They want to get to know their clients not just as customers, but as people who share a common sentiment: a love for the comfort of home.

“Sherry Landis is by far the best real estate agent in Chico. She is professional, positive, and has incredible follow through. She helped us navigate our way through the sale of two homes and the purchase of another—all at the same time! She never missed a beat. She made sure we understood the process, and stayed in constant contact with us. Even after all three homes closed, she continued to call, email, and text just to make sure everything was going as planned. We could not have done it without her.”

Working with Sherry Landis made both selling and buying property worry free. There are so many details in today’s real estate transactions that would make this process very diffi cult without the right realtor. As sellers of commercial property, we appreciated Sherry’s mar-keting knowledge, commitment and timeliness. As buyers, she listened to what we wanted and found us our replacement properties on the fi rst day we started looking. Sherry’s work ethic and communication skills gave us total confi dence and resulted in an even better outcome than we had hoped for.

Ingredients:• Milk Chocolate Cake Mix• One can of Comstock brand Cherry Pie Filling• Real Vanilla • 2 lbs. of powdered sugar• One 8 oz. and one 4 oz. package of cream cheese• One stick real butter• Premium Baking Cocoa

• Salt• Eggs and ingredients listed on cake mix• Chocolate Chips• One can of Pepperidge Farm Crème Filled Pirouette rolled cookies. • Fancy footed cake plate• 2 yards of wired ribbon of your choice

Preparation:Pre-heat oven to 350 degreesIn mixing bowl pour cake mix, ingre-

dients listed on back of box and one ta-blespoon of real vanilla. Mix for 3 minutes on medium. Once batter is thoroughly mixed, mix in 1 cup of Guittard chocolate chips.

Pour equal amounts of batter into 2 pans coated in Pam spray. Tap cake pans several times on the counter to get the air bubbles out of the batter.

Bake according to box directions.

Homemade Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting:

Mix softened cream cheese and butter, 1 tablespoon of real Vanilla, 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl until creamy. Slowly add powdered sugar and mix until smooth. If needed, add a tiny bit of milk to get desired consistency.

After cakes are COMPLETELY cooled, place fi rst cake round onto a festive footed cake plate. Liberally apply frosting to top and edges of cake. Prior to adding the second layer, use a long, serrated

knife and cut off any rounded top of cake. It needs to be fl at. Place second cake on top and liberally frost. Hold one Pirouette up to the side of the cake to get height. Using a sharp knife, cut all rolled cookies to the desired height and put around the entire sides of the cake. Take remaining frosting and load into your pastry bag and use a medium to large star tip to make stars around the entire bottom and top of the cake. Place one hand around the frosting bag to squeeze and the other hand near the star tip.

Spoon cherry pie fi lling to cover top of frosted layer using more cherries than fi lling. The rolled cookies and frosting stars will contain the cherry pie fi lling.

Tie wired ribbon around the middle

of the cake and rolled cookies and tie in a bow.

Nominated by her friend, Wendy O’Neil: “I would like to nominate my friend Athena Dryer because she is a very hard working single mama who didn’t choose her life circumstances but has not given up and deserves some pampering that she doesn’t have to pay for. P.s. I’ll watch her kids while she’s treated if she wins.”

With a name like Athena, it is no wonder she is such a beautiful, strong woman. Three years ago she was suddenly left alone with her kids, no income and nowhere to live. With the help of friends and family, and the determination to carry all the suffering without letting

it reach her children, she was able to start from scratch and make a new l ife for herself and her kids. She came to us with a recently obtained bachelor’s degree from Chico state and a sweet smile as she triumphantly admitted “parenting is becoming fun again.”

We were happy to see her through a day of much-deserved pampering and her kids witnessed the final elements of Athena’s transformation. “I almost didn’t recognize her!” Her son, Michael told me as we walked to the final photo shoot where Athena was full of light and absolutely stunning. Before

AthenaDryerFACIAL AND MAKEUP:Metamorfoz Skin & Beauty341 Broadway St. Suite #208, Chico(530) 570-5184

Sherri and Chloë are the perfect mother-daughter pair to make you look and feel beautiful inside and out. As Athena settled in for her facial, we all had a tearful moment talking about her nomination. Typical girls: in a spa, laughing, crying, and hugging! “Tears are the fountain of youth,” says Sherri, “if you hold it all in, it makes you bitter and ugly.” She encourages Athena to let her true beauty shine through and revives that beauty with Osmosis products made with gentle natural botanicals.

Chloë was professional and patient as she applied light makeup on Athena, enhancing her natural

beauty and explaining her process to Athena’s daughter, Samantha who watched closely and asked “Why are you painting my mom’s face?” Athena left Metamorfoz glowing and gorgeous and Samantha got a taste of the royal treatment too as Chloë “painted” her lips witha coat of lip-gloss.

HAIR AND NAILS:Tonsorial Hair Studio130 Independence Circle, Chico(530) 879-0154

Tonsorial’s bright, airy salon was a perfectly joyful reintroduction into the world after a relaxing facial. Juanita and Laura doted on Athena creating a hairstyle with lots of layers that works with her natural curls, but looks fabulous straightened as well. Two different colors of highlights

were added to add dimension and movement to her new hair. But that’s not al l, they made sure she felt pampered all the way to her fingertips where she got a Christmassy, sparkly bi-colored gel manicure.

STYLING: 5th Street Clothing Co.328 Broadway Street, Chico(530) 345-5754

After a full day of beauty, Terri went above and beyond, staying late in the shop to make sure Athena looked and felt amazing from head to toe. A delicate linen and wool cardigan was the perfect fit with a rust scarf for that ever- important “pop of color” and a tassel necklace to add some glitz.

Tiffany SmithNominated by herself:“I’m a full time stay at home mom of two (3 year old girl and 9 month old son). I work four part time jobs from home and the majority of my days are spent caring for my son who has been classified as “failure to thrive” since three months old. So my “spare” time is usually spent with doctors and specialists all working to help him gain weight and thrive. Needless to say, having time to do my hair or even put on mascara is a rare luxury these days, particularly with Christmas around the corner and trying to make enough money to give my kids a memorable holiday. The husband and I have decided not to give each other gifts and instead put whatever we can towards the kids and family this year… a few hours away for myself just to breathe would be a dream come true. Thank you for the opportunity to enter your contest.”

There’s a diva hiding somewhere in this timid on the outside hard-working mama! “Sometimes I feel like Marilyn Monroe, sometimes I feel like Stevie Nicks,” says Tiffany about her ideal personal style. So when she was able to have a day for herself, we were happy to see she really went for it! She went for blonde, she went for sparkly platforms, and she achieved her goal of wanting to “look sexy, not like an old mom.”

HAIR AND MAKEUP:The Poison Apple 313 Walnut Street, Suite 100, Chico(530) 899-7875

Kim is always an expert at knowing what’s hot in the world of hair fashion. “Current styles are loose, soft and feminine. A lot of people are embracing

thei r own natural texture,” she explained as she evened out the back of Tiffany’s grown-out bob to make it easier to wear straight or naturally wavy. She brightened the color and heightened the glamour by adding blonde color and lots of shine. Morgan used a combination of Youngblood mineral cosmetics and a few of her other favorite brands to highlight Tiffany’s cheeks, eyes and lips and even out her skin’s classic ivory glow.

STYLING: Labelz974 Mangrove Avenue, Chico(530) 345-1615Jordan helped Tiffany up her glam factor in a gorgeous peach dress with a classic silhouette and a bit of bling on the cuffs and collar. A touch of sparkle in her earrings and gold glitter platform heels left Tiffany’s fear of looking “like an old mom” as nothing but a distant dream.

Shirley BolinNominated by her daughter, Meaghann Tenuta: “I believe my mother, Shirley Bolin, deserves a makeover. Not only is she a mother of six kids, but a grandmother to six kids as well. She volunteers for free for the Red Cross. Every week she handles multiple local catastrophes like providing for people in need after house fires. She works very hard and is a wonderful mother. As a family we have struggled since my father passed away in 2008. I think my mother would love a makeover and it would be something wonderful for her this Holiday Season!”

Thanks to Meaghann for sending us her lovely mother. Shirley has the endearing balance of a safe, loving grandmother mixed with the innocent, happy spirit of a child. Soft-spoken, warm and earnest with an adorably shy side, we fell in love with her throughout the day and admire her spunk for rocking bangs and brightly colored hair.

HAIR, MAKEUP, WAX:The Body Resort1731 Mangrove Avenue, Chico(530) 809-0756Tucked away in a cute building on Mangrove, The Body Resort is truly an escape from the business of everyday life. With a never-ending list of salon and spa services and a staff that will make you laugh, relax and feel beautiful, we couldn’t have found a better fit for Shirley. “We want you to see on the outside what we see on the inside,” says owner, Mikell who freshened Shirley’s face with her gentle waxing technique. Britton was a true artist with mineral makeup, bringing out Shirley’s eyes and natural skin tone. Nichole added some fun to Shirley’s day with her witty sense of humor and personable

way of taking care of her clients. As they chatted away, Nichole applied rich shine and color to Shirley’s hair, shaping it with a flattering cut. We were amazed with how smooth and healthy her hair looked and just had to touch it!

Soft on the skin, reflective of her beautiful hair color and easy to wear, Shirley looked glamorous with a touch of sparkle from Katie’s Corner’s extensive collection of unique jewelry.

Leah FernandezNominated (twice!) by her husband, Daniel Fernandez: “My wife desper-ately needs the new year makeover. She has not had a new look or change in 4 years and I can’t think of a more selfless person to give a new look to. She goes without new clothes so her children can have what they need and she cuts and colors her own hair to save for them. I would love to see her finally have something for herself. I am blown away every day by how she puts herself on the back burner for our children. I just wish there was a way to show her how much we appreciate her and all she does.”

When Leah found out her husband nominated her for a day of pampering, she was “totally shocked!” Spending the day with her, we could easily see why her husband was in love

with his go-with-the-flow, always smiling, infectiously happy wife. She was gorgeous to be around start to finish!

HAIR, MAKEUP AND ACCESSORIES:Mecca Salon1342 Esplanade # B, Chico(530) 892-8746

Mecca is a girly, fun place to hide out all day with jewelry sparkling along the walls and a staff of friendly, talented women. Claudia and cut off an incredible SIXTEEN inches of Leah’s hair and gave her a beautiful A-line cut with soft layers. Ashleigh used Bodyography makeup to enhance Leah’s natural color and beauty. With taupe, chocolate and copper colors on the eyes, complete with individual false lashes, Leah had

a new sparkle in her eye and glow to her skin. Monique accessorized with her impressive ability to pair unlikely pieces together for a modern, layered look.

Jessica RyanNominated by her friend, Summer Duncan: “My friend Jessica Ryan is a hard working single mother who is currently going back to school to earn her Master’s degree, working and taking care of her kids. She always goes out of her way with the little bit of free time she has, to be a good friend. She is beautiful inside and out already, but she is very deserving of being pampered.”

Within minutes of meeting Jessica, I knew three things for sure: 1: This girl is driven. 2: This girl is inquisitive. 3: This girl has a smile that makes you want to shape your hands into a heart and fill the negative space with her face. She’s so stinkin’ cute!

Although she loved her day of pampering and looked amazing with her full-on Mecca makeover, she

was equally interested in getting to know the other makeover winners’ personal stories and was curious about the transformation of each participant; social work is definitely her calling. The twinkle in her eye was undeniably there from the start, but the girls at Mecca added their magic, always knowing just the thing to accentuate your inner glimmer.

HAIR, MAKEUP, STYLING:Mecca Salon1342 Esplanade # B, Chico(530) 892-8746

The glam squad at Mecca never disappoints! Claudia kept the length in Jess ica’s hai r, adding warm highlights to break up the color and create a soft, natural look. She added tons of shine, freshened up the cut, and curled it for her close-up!

Danielle evened out Jessica’s skin-tone, playing on her already beautiful

natural color. “With brown eyes, anything goes!” Announces Danielle and she decides to have some fun, using the emerald green jewelry as inspiration to add some green into Jessica’s eye makeup. “I’m adding some solid definition to her eyebrows for her awesome face shape,” Danielle says firmly. (Gotta love a woman who loves her job!) Individual lashes add length and thickness and a nude lip is simple but glamorous finish.

Monique is a fashion expert. Jessica’s body was killer in a black lace short-sleeved dress and leggings with a perfectly placed rose-tied wrap belt and layers of gold and earth-toned jewelry. A bold flash of emerald green at her collar bone and wrist added some color to this feminine flawless look.

Amy RodgersNominated by Laurie Maloney,co-founder of the House of Hope. “I was hoping you would be up for making over the manager of House of Hope, Amy Rodgers. She lived in Sabbath House for about a year before moving over to House of Hope and we chose her as our manager. She has really picked herself up and is a great role model for others. I think this makeover would be wonderful for her and motivating to others going through what she has gone through.”

Amy is so full of life, laughter and sass, I’m sure she must be the comic relief and inspiration to the women at the House of Hope. As we wit-nessed her transformation, one thing really stood out: her joyful demeanor from start to finish. No matter what

adversity she’s experienced in her life, she is not one to throw a pity party (although if she did, I’m sure it would be a fantastic event). As she talks, observes and engages, her bright blue eyes are captivating and her lips go from smirk to smile as if everything in life amuses her. She is hilarious, fun and a delight to be around. Shockingly single, she now has the perfect little black dress for date night so if you like playing cupid, keep Amy in mind!

HAIR AND MAKEUP:The Poison Apple 313 Walnut Street, Suite 100, Chico(530) 899-7875

Amy’s fine hair got a major lift from Kim who added highlights and some layers to add body and movement.

She gave her a more rich, natural looking color and side swept bangs to frame her face and bring attention to her big baby blues. Morgan evened out Amy’s skin with Youngblood mineral makeup. She added definition to Amy’s eyebrows and used light, natural colors to bring out her eyes and give her face a healthy glow.

STYLING:Labelz974 Mangrove Avenue, Chico(530) 345-1615

Jordan of Labelz and Heather of StyleMindChic.com were a great style team. Amy’s petite body looked fabulous in the perfect little black dress. Gold and black heels stepped up the class and delicate gold and rhinestone jewelry added sparkle to Amy’s refined, glamorous look.

Lisa GaribayNominated by Bil l Slack, Shelter Supervisor at Torres Community Shelter:“Lisa arrived at the shelter in 2012 with two teenage children. When a family break-up forced Lisa out of her home in Oregon, Lisa returned to her childhood home of Butte County.

Most people who reside in the Torres Shelter have some previous experience with homelessness, but for Lisa and her family were new to homelessness. Throughout her stay at the Torres Shelter Lisa did everything she could to make sure that it was a positive learning experience for her children. She refused to let them use the situation as an excuse to let their school work suffer; it was Lisa’s question about a place for her children to study that led to the Torres Shelter’s partnership with a couple of teachers in the area to provide tutoring in the evening.

While her children were in school Lisa spent her days in search of

employment; some days you could see the disappointment and frustration in Lisa’s eyes as she checked her family in for the night. But even on those days, when her eyes would fill with tears, you could still sense that Lisa was not someone to give up on her dream of providing herself and her children with a better life. Even on the worst days Lisa still found the strength to be positive in front of her children.

It is because of Lisa’s indomitable spirit and her refusal to give up on the dream of providing a better life for herself and her children that made Lisa our choice for this make-over. If ever a mother could use a little pampering it’s Lisa.”

When we met Lisa in person, it wasn’t struggle that stood out, but strength; we saw a laid back, yet smart and sassy woman who is fun to be around and has a contagious curly-que

smile. If we could book her for a makeover every month just to hang out, we would!

Jessica Roach who did Lisa’s multi dimensional hair color, and Lin Perkins who styled the cut to highlight Lisa’s gorgeous eyes, were absolutely amazing. “She is our favorite type of client! to make her look perfectly customized,” they said about Lisa. As I was talking to her, I was struck by her absolute will ingness to do whatever they thought appropriate for her look.

I compl imented Lisa’s new red sparkling gel nails done by Jenna Landers and she commented that she “wanted something fun for the holidays!” With three kids at home and a full time job, being queen for the day was a well-deserved start to the New Year for Lisa. The girls at Bidwell Hair Cottage even sent her

on her way with a goody-bag full of styling products to keep up her look; we must say they are honoring the “Bidwell” name with their philanthropic approach to beauty. Annie would be proud!

You may know the voice “On Broadwayyyy!” But you may not know the energy and focus that

goes into dressing their customers at 5th Street Clothing Co. Jennie was enthusiastic and accommodating as she checked in with Lisa to find out about her personal style and suggested new looks for her to try. When she suggested a cardigan that Lisa said reminded her of her ex’s new girlfr iend, Jennie was hilariously quick to hang it back up and say “Ok forget it! We’re just gonna get out the kerosene and burn that one.” The final look was the perfect fit to highlight Lisa’s bold and brilliant personality.

Esteban Duran

Nominated by his wife, Deanna Alexich: “My husband never buys himself anything. Not jeans, new boots, a jacket, nada. He is be-speckled in paint form his art or house painting with a f ine dust cover of chihuahua hair. He tends to hold on to his own hair as well. He looks better with it shorter, and will sometimes make his way to Supercuts, but only when I plead and usually my son and daughter need to chime in as well. He is deserving of a makeover because he wants for nothing. And for a ‘mature’ man he looks hot in jeans. Thanks from all of us, Including the dogs”

STYLING:Formal Education334 Broadway Street, Chico(530) 809-1839

Formal Education is raising the bar for local fashion. It is easy to get away with constantly casual styles in a college town, but why settle when you can look your best? George was able to understand Esteban’s personal style and expand on it, pushing the limits of his fashion comfort zone without scaring him off. Esteban left Formal Education saying, “That George, man! He really knows what he’s doing!” We have

to agree. A perfectly fitted jacket, American made denim, luxuriously soft 100% cashmere scarf, fun socks and wine colored shoes had Esteban looking styled without looking boring.

His formal outfit was a knockout. The vest and tie gave a distinguished, flattering look with subtle shades to accent his hair color and skin tone. The coat was the perfect modern touch to make this ensemble classy and current. Dare we say, “dapper”? We do.

A local artist ful l of energy and willingness to experiment with all things art (including fashion), Esteban was a stylist’s dream. Eager to try a new look, thankful to his family for the nomination, and quick to laugh, pose, and even run to a photo shoot, Esteban added humor and light to our busy day of beautification. With great posture and a comfort in his own body, clothes look fabulous on him and his hair (as requested by Deanna) was trimmed to perfection. From locks to socks, this artist sure cleans up nice!

LizzyOne of our makeover winners this year came to us from Butte Humane Society. We were looking through the available dogs up for adoption on the website and couldn’t resist this one-eyed wonder with long locks and a sweet disposition.

“This shy little love is Lizzy. Lizzy is an adorable and super sweet little Spaniel mix. She loves crawling into your lap and you can’t help but pet her! She’ll win you over pretty darn quickly when she gently nudgesyour hand with her muzzle. You would be hard pressed to find a dog who is more gentle and sweet than little Lizzy. She’s so loving that she will be a wonderful addition to any family! If you think you have enough room in your heart to wel-come this little girl come on down and meet her! You’ll sure be glad you did.”

As Lizzy went to her spa day, she won over the hearts of other dogs, our photographer, Michelle, and her stylist, Alexandra. She was quick to give hugs and fully relaxed into

her beauty session with ease and appreciation.

Alexandra Kriz is professional and passionate about what she does. This was apparent in both the way she gently cared for Liz zy, and the way Lizzy was lovingly at ease with her. She has been in the pet grooming business for 11 years and prides herself on her creativity. From a simple clean-up to a wild style, she can do it al l. “When I can do something nice for a dog, that’s what makes me feel good.” She encourages owners to let their dogs enjoy socializing with other dogs and provides a cage-free environment to prevent anxiety. Alexandra gave Lizzy a good comb

out, tr immed up her feathering, bathed and conditioned her and styled her with pink bows in her hair. Lizzy thanked her with a hug. “Oh my God, I wish I could just take this dog home,” gushed Alexandra, “Lizzy really tugged on my heart-str ings. She was such a perfect angel and was the biggest love afterwards. She was so appreciative of all the attention and of getting cleaned up. I didn’t just want to make her look beautiful, I wanted to make her feel special.” Judging by Lizzy’s affectionate goodbye, it was easy to see that she spent the day feeling very loved.

Discussion on Cancer Screening by Dr. Sam Mazj

The main goal of cancer screening is to reduce the number of people who develop and die from cancer. Scientists have developed, and continue to develop, tests that can be used to screen a person for

cancer. Many people think that the main purpose of these screening tests is to look for cancer in people who don’t have any signs of the disease, or to find cancer in an early, easily treatable stage. But the overall goals of cancer screening are to: • Lower the number of people who die from the disease, or eliminate deaths from cancer altogether.• Lower the number of people who develop the disease.

Not all screening tests are beneficial

Although some cancer screening tests have proven benefits that can help achieve these goals, others do not. When talking about cancer screening, it’s important to understand that these tests can increase the apparent “cure rate” of a cancer without

actually affecting how many people die from the disease or the risk of dying from the disease. That’s because sometimes cancer screening tests find cancer that isn’t causing a person harm and won’t cause a person harm in his or her lifetime.

Because cancer screening tests can detect some tumors that don’t need to be treated, improved cancer survival rates don’t always mean that a test benefits everyone. In fact, the risks of having a screening test could outweigh the advantages. The best way to tell if a screening test has actual benefits, including a decrease in cancer deaths, is through randomized controlled clinical trials (research studies in people).

Talk with your doctor about which screening tests are right for you and the benefits and risks of these tests

Check back in next month’s issue for a continuation of the discussion on cancer screening.

You’re on the verge of making some exciting, positive, and lasting changes in your life. Then it happens….the thought of failure. What if I don’t succeed? What will friends and family

think? What if I do succeed? Will I like the new me? Change is good, it’s what keeps life fresh and makes things exciting, and yes sometimes scary with the unknown. In the process of wanting to change your life for the better and live healthier, there often comes anxiety and adversity to change. So how do we overcome those barriers? Here are a few suggestions:

- Confide in someone you know who will support and honor your decision, whether it be a coach, a friend, someone who realizes the importance in this decision of yours, you need someone who will not judge you, but rather offer support and listen, and not lecture you or “problem-solve” for you.

by Dr. Dina Rabo, DC

- Put your focus on the future goal. If it’s weight loss, what are the gains? Positive self- image, being able to have energy to play with your kids or grandkids? - Be real about the facts; what will you be giving up and missing and also what will you be gaining. Give yourself permission to fail at times. If you have a bad day, don’t give up, with transition comes trial and error, get back in the saddle and know the rewards of change will inevitably occur more frequently over time.- Get comfortable with change. If you’re comfortable in your baggy sweats, get out of them for one day. Baby steps, if you go to the same store grocery shopping, go somewhere else. Knowing what you should do is not the same as taking action…so as Nike says, “Just do it!”

Hitting the Nail on the Headby Scott Amick, CPT

Does your New Year’s Resolution include getting more active, paying more attention to what you eat, or burning off a few holiday cookie calories? If so, I recommend carefully considering the MODE in which you are planning to exercise. All of you baby boomers out there should think twice before increasing your walking or jogging activity from sedentary all the way up to five miles a day over a short time period. The repetitive impact of the movement is likely to leave joints sore, your core and pelvic floor de-conditioned and unprepared to support your spine, and your legs stiff from inflexibility. The impact factor is even more pronounced for those who have spine and lower extremity surgeries such as hip replacements, knee surgeries, and ankle fusions.

My favorite image to give my clients is that of a nail being tapped into wood by a metaphorical “Gravity Hammer” as their foot lands when they walk or jog. If at all possible, wouldn’t it be great to control the effects of that hammer? Here is the Advanced Body Dynamics plan to help you gradually increase your running or jogging activity with the appropriate progressive overload.

• Prepare nutritionally • Begin a daily stretching routine• Plan your recovery strategy to include active recovery sessions• Discuss progressive overload timeframe• Start walking or jogging!

ABD exclusively offers submerged treadmill water walking in our rehabilitation and gait therapy programming. By starting in the water, we can control the amount of impact on your musculoskeletal system while you walk or run.

COSMETIC PROCEDURES: Managing Expectationsby Dr. Vimali Paul

We all wish that we could wave a magic wand and look 10 years younger, but in reality, chronological aging is a fact of life. We apply creams and serums with the expectation of immediate results. In reality, anything applied topically can take as much as 4 to 6 weeks to really notice a difference in our skin.

With injectables such as Botox and Juvederm, optimum results can be seen at about 2 weeks, with Botox lasting (on average) 3 months and Juvederm (dermal filler) lasting about a year.

Laser treatments have varied results dependent on what service is being done. Laser Hair Removal usually takes a minimum of 6 treatments , with an expected reduction of 20% each visit. “Hormonal” hair can be more stubborn, with additional touch-ups required.

IPL (intense pulsed light) for redness (Rosacea) and sun damage (brown spots) can take 3-4 treatments to

eliminate, and sunscreen MUST be used to keep further damage from occurring. With Pixel laser for resurfacing the skin , down-time is from 5 days to 2 weeks, and the results are gradual as the cell turnover accelerates and new skin is formed.

Radio-frequency technology (Accent, Thermage) for contouring varies from client to client depending on f luid retention in the individual cells.

Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are fairly superficial, so results will vary depending on the initial condition of the skin.

Call the DermBar to get your questions answered and to set up an appointment with our licensed skin care professionals! 85 Declaration Dr. Suite 100, Chico, CA 95973 | 530.342.2672
