Addition to UMBC Photography Genres

• Advertising photography [not AAT]Note: Photography that presents or calls attention to a product, service, event, or idea for purposes of advertising.

Exercise: Which of these 4 images would be Advertising photography?

P75-54-0057g

P75-54-0000g

P75-54-0295g

P75-54-1489g

Page 5: Updating Work in Hughes Collection 15 Nov 2010 Vicki Sipe

Addition to UMBC Photography Genres

All four of these could use the TGM heading Advertising, but only one really fits the Genre of Advertising photography?

Photo of an advertisement. P75-54-0057g

P75-54-0000g

Photo including an advertisement. P75-54-0295g

Photo including billboards . P75-54-1489g

But this one is a photo taken for an advertisement. It calls attention to the product, in several ways. So this photo falls into the Genre of Advertising photography.

Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm recordField added to the Hughes record template, see Data Dictionary Mappable Where image is of building exterior and a specific street address or street intersection is identified, record “yes” in this field. Also use for parks, statues, etc. where a specific street location is identifiable.

P75-54-0060g

Based on information in the Caption field, consider this image to be Mappable and enter “yes” in the field.

An image might contain information on location that doesn’t appear in the Caption field.

This street light appears to have street signs attached to it.

Zoom in. The street signs tell you that the building was at the corner of W. Lombard St. and S. Liberty St.

Consider this image to be Mappable and enter “yes” in the Mappable field.Add “Corner of W. Lombard St. and S Liberty St.” in the Description field.

Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record -- Mappable field

P75-54-A240g

With a City Directory, you might be able figure out where this building was located.

But based on information in the record and the image, this is NOT mappable. Enter nothing in the Mappable field.

Future project, to map the Mappable images

Project at Drake University. The details page is the CONTENTdm record. We could do something similar with our Hughes images.

Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record -- Title field

Title field Now contains the Accession number

Allows for sorting by Accession number when assigning images. Makes it easier to gather groups of images of same thing.

Remember to supply square brackets when creating a title

Page 12: Updating Work in Hughes Collection 15 Nov 2010 Vicki Sipe

Group of similar images Look at all the images before beginning to work on a record. Gather all possible information, then use all information in each of the records.

P75-54-A89g

We are looking at the Armory, but what is a “Convention Int.”

P75-54-A89g

The caption from this similar image, tells us that the Armory is set up for the Democratic Convention.

The 1912 Democratic National Convention took place in Baltimore at the 5th Maryland Regiment Armory. Add this information to the Description field of both records. Make the Date Created c.1912. Use c. 1912 because we are making some assumptions.

Information from completed record

P75-54-A89g

Do all of the Subject (TGM) field headings fit the new image?

The old image is a pumping station. The new image is the outlet gate house. The Pumping stations heading does not really fit the new image, so do not use it.

The outlet gate house is part of the Lake Montebello water department facility, so both the Water supply and Waterworks headings fit well.

New image in Project Client

The Genre, Location, and Subject Names from the completed record all fit the new image, so use them in your new record.

3) Shop windows and storefronts

Window displaysScope Note:For images that focus on window dressings and displays.

The shot is close in and focuses on the window.

Also look for a TGM term for the product displayed in the window or the type of store. Here we have lots of Tobacco products. P75-54-N758g

Page 29: Updating Work in Hughes Collection 15 Nov 2010 Vicki Sipe

3) Shop windows and storefronts

Storefronts—Focus is more on building front than on the windows. Not so close a shot.

Automobile dealerships covers the type of store.

Also look for the company name or business name in OCLC Authority file.

3) Shop windows and storefronts

Stores & shops—Focus is on a group of stores. A street of shops.

Cityscapes is both a Genre and a TGM term.

Add as a Subject Name the business names you can see on building fronts and in shop windows. There are many in this case and the display has been abbreviated.
