Communications - Radio/TV Track Radford University, Radford, VA, August 1988 Minor Industrial/Technical Telecommunications TECHNICAL PROJECTS • County-wide Network Upgrade: Klamath County Government's network infrastructure was Cisco-based. The network topography for two distinct campuses of county offices was two flat networks joined by a T-1. All outlying county offices not on either campus were hosted on consumer-grade cable modem connections, and didn't participate in any county-hosted processes including email. In an effort to bring those offices into the fold, I installed point-to-multi-point wireless. To leverage the county's money we started buying off-lease Foundry and Brocade layer-3 switches and I proceeded to replace all the Cisco gear. I subnetted the two flat networks based on physical building to help with network traffic issues. During this time fiber had been strung around the area and passed every location where service was necessary. I replaced the Cisco PIX-525 with a pair of Watchguard Firebox X750e series UTM appliances and secured a second fiber connection so the county had a redundant connection to the internet. I replaced the T-1 that connected the two campuses with a 1Gb dark fiber. I connected each outlying office to the fiber and removed the point-to-mulit-point wireless. • County-wide IP Phone Project: Klamath County Government's phone system was fractured across several platforms: NEC 2000IPS, NEC KTS, Toshiba Strata DK, and Avaya Partner ACS. In an effort to simplify overall system management, simplify inter- office contact by implementing a county-wide 4-digit inter-office dialing scheme, and lowering overall telephony costs, the county went to a hosted IP-based phone system. My role was to manage the project from initial phone/line/extension counts and designing an inter-office dialing plan to soliciting bids and ordering phones to coordinating the roll-out and training. After-action mop-up included canceling analog, digital, and long-distance services no longer needed, act as the intermediary with the provider, and provide end-user support. The County realized an initial savings of over $130,00 in the first year. There was no capital outlay as the system is hosted and the only hardware purchased was approximately 500 phones at a cost of less than $200 each. TRAINING • Cisco: CCNA Accelerated (Intro + ICND) • Cisco: PIX Firewall Specialist (SNPA + SND) • Cisco: Intrusion Protection Accelerated (IPS + HIPS) • Cisco: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN v2.2) • Cisco: Building Scalable Cisco Inter-networks (BSCI v3.0) • Brocade: Basic Switch and Router Administration (ETH-103) • Watchguard: Certified System Professional – Fireware XTM v11.4
