• Construction

• Contracts for training of SMMEs and construction of local access

roads started

• Contracts for the construction of 4 Haul Roads to bridge sites

started (Nov 2016 to May 2017).

• Associated Search and Rescue of TOPS completed for

construction camp sites and first km of haul road routes

• Relocation of affected houses and graves started (66

structures/18 homesteads)

• Advertising for exhumation of graves without family

contratcs to be done shortly

• Repairs and maintenance to provincial and municipal roads

leading to the sites to be accelerated

• Mtentu Bridge tenders closed 23 January 2017

• R1.510 billion was lowest tender received

• Msikaba Bridge tenders to close 30 January 2017

• Land acquisition for remaining sections of route continuing

• Detailed Design for remaining sections of roads

• 2 packages advertised and closed in December

• 2 packages currently out to Tender

• 3 packages still to be advertised

• Application submitted for Mining Permit and Environmental

Authorisation for Quarry Site SQ1 located between Msikaba and

Mtentu Bridges south of Holy Cross.

• 5 span post tensioned T-beam deck (longest span of 20m)

• Built in 1979

• Existing minimum clearance of 5.030m

• SANRAL minimum is 6.0m for new, for existing discuss with Bridge

Network Manager but not <5.6m

• Start of construction of two Bridges (3-4 year construction period)

Funding

• Funding for the bridges has been allocated from

SANRALs non-toll budget allocation

• Hybrid Funding Model to be used to fund the

remaining road portions:

• Combination of state funding (Fiscus) and

borrowing (Bonds)

• However the exact details are currently being

resolved with Treasury

• Funding for biodiversity offset agreement

• Awaiting Treasury procedures

Impact

The project will have a huge positive impact on the Eastern

Cape and particularly the Pondoland area • The N2 WCR will be a Sustainable Development Corridor that will

form the Spine for the EC and Pondoland Development

• Greenfields portion will provide access to one of the most beautiful

but currently inaccessible and impoverished areas in SA

• The Mtentu and Msikaba bridges will be tourist attractions in their

own right complimenting the tourism attractions of the Wild Coast

• Will improve economic and logistic linkages in the region

• The project will have major socio- economic benefits

• Will open up the tourism and agriculture potential of the region

• Will significantly benefit the environment through the environmental

off-set agreement

• Will transform the EC construction industry landscape

in accordance with the requirements of the

Baseline ecological data needs to be collected for

sensitive sites as per the requirements of the Aquatic

EMP

Access Requirements

The contractor has indicated that construction of an

access road may be required for Msikaba South, these

roads may be outside of the haul road alignment.
