Later that month, we hopped in the trusty car again totravel to St. Louis, Missouri, where we were warmly greetedby Jean and Francis (“Stef”) Steffen and the Saint Louisarea associates.

After sharing a delicious meal, we had an enrichingdiscussion of ways to connect with the Ursuline Sisters tomake the presence of Angela alive.

All of our Associate gatherings resonate with the smilesand prayers of faith-filled people seeking to share the missionand spirit of Saint Angela — and good food, too! As we talk, laugh and pray, we explore the Ursuline Associateexperience together and grow in commitment to the work ofthe Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph.

ON THE ROAD WITH YOUR CO-DIRECTORS continued from page 1

On Tuesday evening, September 21, a group of Ursuline Sisters and Associates gathered at Legion Park inOwensboro. The sun was setting, and the hustle and bustle of five o’clock could be seen and heard all around us. Itwas my first encounter with many of the sisters, since I had just completed my “end of life” statement the day before.I myself had had a busy and unsettling day. I have five children still at home...so you can imagine!

When I stepped through the door of the picnicshelter, Sister Marietta was speaking andeveryone sat in contemplation. I quietly took myseat and joined in. The reading from Matthewthat day stirred everyone. The thought of worldly

riches seemed inconceivable among so many who had set suchthings aside. Marian Bennett led us in prayer and dinner wasserved. As I looked at the tables filled with food before me, therichness of the hands that had prepared this meal sent shivers oflove down my spine.

As we ate dinner and talked with one another, quietness hadcome around the shelter. Gone were the sounds of traffic and thethoughts of the day. We were full of joy and laughter, and lovenow filled the air.

After dinner we came together for discussion and thebusiness of setting next month’s meeting. I was thinking: “Whatabout next week?”

We then held discussions within our groups. The questionsdiffered for the sisters and associates, but the theme, I think, wasthe same: “How can we serve each other to bring about thepurpose of the Lord?”

I knew in my heart that after everything I had heard andexperienced that evening, we had all the ingredients forgreatness. As I said my goodbyes and walked to my car, Ithanked God for being “the richest woman on earth.”

Gathered in St. Louis on October 11 were (front row)Marian Bennett, Carol Jo Hogan, Jean Steffen, SisterMarietta Wethington, Shirley Eckert, and (back row)Francis Steffen and Sera Mesnier.

A new chapter in the history of Ursulines in the United States began in 1992 when the nine autonomous Ursulinecommunities met in Youngstown, Ohio. That meeting marked the beginning of what we call the “Ursuline Society.”The congregations of Belleville, Illinois; Brown County, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo, and Youngstown, Ohio;Paola, Kansas; and Louisville and Maple Mount in Kentucky, ratified a mission statement at the leadership meeting

held in Frontenac, Minnesota, in May 2002.The nine communities agreed to “create a new model of Ursuline community together”

and “to move beyond collaboration and toward integration” during 2002-2007. In 2003,Sister Margaret Ann Hagan from the Ursulines of Louisville became the first full-timecoordinator of the new model. She is assisted by a three-person steering committeecomposed of one sister from each of the three geographic areas represented in theUrsuline Society. This steering committee works with the coordinator to gather informationfrom the member communities and to establish a clear vision and model for all themembership. Sister Martha Keller from our Maple Mountcommunity currently serves as the triad representative forBelleville, Maple Mount and Paola.

Over the last two years, all of the sisters in each communityhave studied one another’s history, mission statements, and other

pertinent information to help us get to know one another better. The sisters who wished have aprayer partner from one of the other congregations. In addition, Sister Margaret Ann has spentsignificant amounts of her time visiting each of the nine communities to get to know the sistersand the uniqueness of each congregation.

Currently, the members are asked to complete the exercises in a common workbookentitled Ursuline Society in Collaboration. This guide for prayer, study and discussion willlead all the members into the future as it evolves for us. We invite you, our associates, to praywith and for us as we continue the integration. We will continue to update and involve you as the Ursuline Societymission becomes reality for us.

Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph and Belleville Move Toward Mergerby Sister Michele Morek, OSU

The two communities have very similar roots. TheBelleville community traces its most recent origins fromCalvarienberg, Germany. They came to the United Statesin 1910 to minister to the pioneer people in North Dakota, teaching in parochial schools and providing summerreligion classes for public school children. In 1942, theregional American motherhouse was transferred to theDiocese of Belleville, where the sisters staffed schoolswhich served poor and minority children. In 1977, themotherhouse in Germany voted to allow the Bellevillesisters to seek to become an autonomous (independent)congregation.

The Belleville motherhouse, along with three residentialhouses, is located on eight wooded acres in the center ofBelleville, Illinois, very close to East St. Louis. The sisterswould like to maintain an Ursuline presence in Belleville, and are looking for some ministry that would like to usethe property — any ideas?

A “merger” means that the Belleville community willjoin the Mount Saint Joseph Ursulines, losing their own

canonical identity and accepting the Mount SaintJoseph Constitutions as their way of life. As you canimagine, this is a big step for the Belleville sisters, and there will be a lot of “letting go” that has tohappen on their journey. The Belleville sisters havetheir own very active associate group, and the twocommunities will be looking for ways to introducethe two associate groups to one another. We knowyou will keep both communities in your prayers.

Assistant congregational leader Sister Cheryl Clemons(third from left) visits with Belleville Ursulines (from left)Sisters Emily Zent, Mary Elizabeth Krampe, and EileenMullen, in Sister Emily’s room in Saint Joseph Villa.

It is one of the “signs of our times” that groups of religious women are moving toward new ways of collaboratingwith and supporting each other, for the sake of their mission and ministries. The Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph areexploring such a relationship with the Ursuline Sisters of Belleville, Illinois. The two communities have known eachother for many years, especially through their interactions in the Ursuline Society, and this new venture seems to be anatural progression of that friendly relationship. Three of the Belleville sisters already reside in the Mount SaintJoseph retirement community.
