The Link Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity at Ohio Northern University v Summer 2010 L et me start by thanking everyone who donated to the 2009 Annual Campaign. Alpha Eta managed to collect over $3600 which is greatly appreciated by the Chapter and the ACB. This goes a long way in sustaining the Chapter and solidifying the finances of the Alumni Control Board. Thank you all again and don’t forget, if you didn’t donate in 2009 you’ll have an opportunity in 2010 to do so in just a couple short months. The Chapter elected one new member at the 2009 Homecoming meeting. Ryan Cupp (’02) joined the ranks of the ACB and has already shown much interest in being a very active member. To see the complete list of ACB members along with their contact information please visit the documents section of the alumni website (www.delta-sig.org). Aſter Homecoming dinner I had the honor of presenting the 2009 Loren C. Schoenberger Alumnus of the Year Award to Bill Hoyt (’91). Bill served as the ACB President from 2001-2005 and under his leadership the ACB began our relationships with both Gilchrist Alumni Associates, who manages our alumni database and distributes the Link, and with Omega Financial, the company who now provides all of our billing collection services along with a bill paying service. Bill’s foresight to initiate the contracting of services previously performed by ACB volunteers has allowed the ACB to focus on sustaining the chapter for years to come instead of having to worry about the day to day operations of the Chapter. On a personal note Bill also helped me transition into the ACB President’s role as smoothly as possible in a time where there was much turmoil and I’m very grateful for his contribution to my development as an effective ACB President. Bill thanked the Chapter for his award by providing a very humble, which is his custom, acceptance speech. Thank you Bill for your past and current support of Alpha Eta. At each Homecoming as we recognize more deserving alumni and see more alumni return it’s easy to see why the current group of undergraduate brothers has such a strong sense of brotherhood and purpose. In the spring Alpha Eta continued to demonstrate its leadership position on the ONU campus by again achieving Silver status on the ONU Standards of Excellence and by winning Greek Week. The community service performed by the Chapter increased again and is proving to ONU and the community that Delta Sigma Phi is a community organization full of men motivated to make a difference on both the local and campus level. In a rollover from last year the ACB has continued the investigation for two major capital improvement projects with a target start of the next academic year (possibly 2010). The heating system and the electrical system are both on the radar for a major upgrade and the ACB will be looking more closely into both of these over the course of the next few months. If you have any expertise that you could offer in the research/ implementation of either of these projects please contact me or any of the other ACB members. Finally, don’t forget to plan ahead for Homecoming 2010 (October 9th) and to visit the alumni website (www.delta-sig.org) for updates on Homecoming, ACB Meetings, and other events throughout the year. The Link Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity at Ohio Northern University v Summer 2010

Let me start by thanking everyone who donated to the 2009 Annual

Campaign.

After Homecoming dinner I had the honor of presenting the 2009 Loren C. Schoenberger Alumnus of the Year Award to Bill Hoyt (’91). Bill served as the ACB President from 2001-2005 and under his leadership the ACB began our relationships with both Gilchrist Alumni Associates, who manages our alumni database and distributes the Link, and with Omega Financial, the company who now provides all of our billing collection services

along with a bill paying service.

In the spring Alpha Eta continued to demonstrate its leadership position

on the ONU campus by again achieving Silver status on the ONU Standards of Excellence and by winning Greek Week. The community service performed by the Chapter increased again and is proving to ONU and the community that Delta Sigma Phi is a community organization full

of men motivated to make a difference on both the local and campus level.

In a rollover from last year the ACB has continued the investigation for two major capital improvement projects with a target start of the next academic year (possibly 2010). The heating system and the electrical system are both on the radar for a major upgrade and the ACB will be looking more closely into both of these over the course of the next few months. If you have any expertise that you could offer in the research/implementation of either of these projects please contact me or any of the other ACB members.

Finally, don’t forget to plan ahead for Homecoming 2010 (October 9th) and to visit the alumni website (www.delta-sig.org) for updates on Homecoming, ACB Meetings, and other events throughout the year.

Last quarter, the chapter was first among the fraternities and sororities in number of community service hours, logging an amazing 207 hours. With

the large amount of snow that fell in Ada this winter, the brothers spent a lot of time shoveling the driveways of local Ada residents. We gathered everyone up for a highway clean-up along Rt. 235 and did our part to keep the roads clean. As a chapter we donated money to Relay for Life and have started raising money for March of Dimes. The brothers are also excelling highly in grades. The fall pledge class earned the honor of receiving the award for the highest new member G.P.A. out of all Fraternities on campus. The brothers have also been working very hard on their grades and increased the chapter G.P.A. to a 2.94.

As spring quarter comes to an end the chapter received

the “Silver Chapter Award” for the second year in a row in the Standards in Excellence Program. In addition to being a Silver Chapter, we were recognized for our outstanding philanthropic project in our quest to help pre-mature babies through the March of Dimes. The brothers were also crowned Greek Week Champions for the second year in a row. For the following year, all newly initiated men will be moving into the house and will have the great experience of living with the brothers.

The chapter is moving in a very positive direction and will continue to do so as the brothers strive to make Greek Life, the campus and the community better.

Happy 90th Birthday, Alpha Eta! Congrats to everyone; that’s quite amazing! It’s also

hard for me to believe that I’ve been a member of Delta Sigma Phi for 20 years. Twenty?! Come to think of it, that’s half of my life. Of course, that’s a very short run compared to some alumni. For example, one of my favorite alumni is Loren Schoenberger who joined our fraternity in 1939! Imagine that: he’s been an active member of Alpha Eta for 71 years! And he’s still involved. I happened to see him at Homecoming discretely donating a large denomination bill to the chapter when he thought no one would notice. What a great guy.

The ACB picked me as alumnus of the year this past fall because of my role on the ACB for a few years. But I think there are many others that have accomplished far more than I. One such person is Roy Stype who is putting in a lot of time with capital improvements work on the house. Even though he’s battling health issues, he makes most meetings and Homecomings and has donated many thousands of dollars to the chapter in his typical understated way. And then there’s some alumni making incredible contributions of time, like

An Alumnus’ Perspectiveby Bill Hoyt

George Dupey and Matt Zeedyk. Even through a job layoff, George continued expertly managing the treasury’s purse strings as he has for more than 10 years. Matt has been an expert at keeping all of the ‘plates’ spinning as ACB President. That’s no simple task, though he makes it look easy.

And that only scratches the surface. I should be mentioning a whole slew of names of alumni that I witnessed making a huge impact in our chapter though their blood/sweat/tears such as Brent Johnson, Mike Gordon, Tom Ellis, David Dull, Dave Conner, and many others including many incredible guys before my short ‘era.’ And there’s lots of new guys in the chapter and ACB that making Alpha Eta stronger every day.

So what makes Alpha Eta worth all of this combined effort? Of course it’s brotherhood – the guys living in the house, the guys that graduated decades ago, and the guys that join well after our chapter is a century

old. These guys form a much deeper friendship than roommates in the dorm – they are brothers. They’re the types of people who lend you their truck for work when your car breaks down (thanks Frazier!) or make sure that a huge group gets together for your 21st birthday even when it’s in the summer (Del! Jim! Herb!). Think back to your own unique experiences and to how many friends and groomsmen have been Delts. And to all of the laugh-out-loud stories that pop into our heads over the years. So, congrats, Alpha Eta. Here’s to another 90 great years!
