oland serves as the geographical andcultural crossroads of Eastern andWestern Europe. Since joining the Eu-

ropean Union (2004) and Schengen (2007),Poland enjoys a crucial position as thelargest of the former Eastern Europe statesand one of the most populous and economi-cally sound members of the EuropeanUnion.

It is a modern and dynamic country full ofopportunities for young people willing toget quality education, enhancing theirknowledge, improving skills and boostinginternational experience. It is a hub bridg-ing east and west, north and south, com-bining cosmopolitan attitude and rich his-torical legacy. With over 1.9 million stu-dents it boasts of the highest scholarisationindices in Europe.

Poland has a lot to offer to internationalstudents. It has over 400 public and privatehigher education institutions, many withcenturies of old tradition, well-equippedand internationally recognised faculties.Polish academic traditions date back to the14th century and some of Europe’s oldestuniversities can be found here. For in-stance, the Jagiellonian University ofKrakow, established in 1364, is the secondoldest university in Central Europe.Nicholas Copernicus and Marie Sklodows-ka-Curie are among the known names ofPolish scientists admired worldwide.

Poland’s education market is growingand the number of higher education institu-tions has increased five-fold while the num-ber of students quadrupled. Each year al-most half a million young people from theUS, Canada, UK, Brazil, China, Israel,Ukraine, Russia, Scandinavian and otherEuropean and Asian countries begin theireducation at Polish universities and col-leges. The universities participate in inter-national student exchange programmesand engage in bilateral agreements and in-dividual exchange programmes. All theseinitiatives enhance the development of rela-tions between Polish and foreign institu-tions of higher education. A number of Pol-ish institutions of higher education wereawarded an Erasmus University Charter

Polish universities constantly strive forimprovement. The medical university ofGdansk is the largest medical academic in-stitution in Northern Poland. It serves as analma mater to around 6,000 undergraduateand postgraduate students in four faculties— faculty of health sciences, faculty of med-icine, faculty of pharmacy and joint venturebetween intercollegiate faculty of biotech-nology of the University of Gdansk and theMedical University of Gdansk.

Qualified faculty, student-centred staff,modern facilities, and a variety of coursestaught in English with a state-of-the-artmethodology can make Polish universities agood choice for students. Following a gen-erous funding from the European Union, allPolish universities boast of high-tech labo-ratories.

“Due to the diminished demographics inPoland, universities are now particularly in-terested to take in more foreign students,”says Dr Kazimierz Bilanow from the ‘Studyin Poland’ project.
