START OF A STREAK: The Dodgers tonight begin a five-game
road trip with the first of two games against the American League
East’s Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers last faced the Rays in 2013,
sweeping a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. The two clubs
have not played at Tropicana Field since the Rays took two of three
from the Dodgers in 2007. After Thursday’s off day, Los Angeles
heads to Toronto for three games before going back home to begin
a nine-game homestand on Monday.
The Dodgers are 6-2 all-time against the Rays, going 3-3
at Tropicana Field. In addition to the aforementioned 2007
series, the Dodgers took two of three from Tampa in 2002
in St. Petersburg.
Tonight begins the Dodgers’ 20-game Interleague
schedule, where in addition to the Rays (four games), Los
Angeles will face the Blue Jays (3), Angels (4), Red Sox
(3), Orioles (3) and Yankees (3) this season. Last year, the
club was 10-10 in Interleague play and all-time, the
Dodgers are 148-166 (.471) against the AL in the regular
season.
The Rays haven’t tasted victory over the Dodgers since
June 24, 2007, a span of nearly nine years:

The Rays’ drought versus the Dodgers is tied for the 10th
longest active losing drought in the Majors (longest active
is the Phillies, who haven’t beaten the Angels since June 9,
2003).

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!: Yesterday marked the four-year
anniversary of Guggenheim Baseball Management being officially
introduced as the new ownership group of the Dodgers with Mark
Walter as controlling partner. The rest of the partners include
Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Todd Boehly, Peter Guber, Bobby
Patton and Dodger President and CEO Stan Kasten. The current
ownership’s first official victory came on May 5, 2012 at Wrigley
Field and, since taking over, the Dodgers are 361-290 (.555) and
have won three consecutive division titles (2013-15) for the first
time in club history.
STARTS AT THE TOP: Chase Utley entered 2016 having made
11 starts at the leadoff spot in his first 13 big league seasons, but
has appeared at leadoff in 21 games (19 starts) this season, hitting
.289 (24-for-83) and posting one of the Majors’ best on-base
percentages from the top spot:

1. Dexter Fowler, CHC .471
2. Logan Forsythe, TB .418
3. Jose Altuve, HOU .395
4. Chase Utley, LAD .372
5. John Jaso, PIT .371
Utley posted an .815 OPS in the month of April, which
was historically good for a Dodger second baseman:

PUT THE ROOTS DOWN: Several Dodgers have strong ties to
Tampa Bay, including Dodger President of Baseball Operations
Andrew Friedman, who was the general manager of the Rays
from 2006-14 and helped the franchise to their only World Series
appearance in 2008. Dodger outfielder Carl Crawford and reliever
J.P. Howell were both key members on that 2008 squad as
Crawford came up in the Rays’ system and starred in Tampa from
2002-10. Howell was acquired by the Rays from the Royals in a
2006 deal and pitched in Tampa from 2006-12.
Tonight’s starter, Scott Kazmir, was acquired by the Rays
from the Mets in 2004 and pitched in Tampa from 2005-
08. Kazmir made five Postseason starts for the Rays
during their AL pennant run. In fact, both of tonight’s
starters are among the winningest pitchers in Tampa Bay
franchise history:
Rays, Highest Winning Percentage – All-Time (minimum 70 games started)
Pitcher Seasons W-L (Pct.)
David Price 2008-14 82-47 (.636)
Jeff Niemann 2008-12 40-26 (.606)

Matt Moore 2011-16 33-23 (.589)
Scott Kazmir 2004-09 55-44 (.556)
James Shields 2006-12 87-73 (.544)
After the first inning this season, Kazmir is holding
opposing hitters to a .237 batting average (18-for-76). In
the first, the opposition is hitting .400 (10-for-25).

MENDING: The Dodgers have nine players on the DL: Brett
Anderson, Mike Bolsinger, Andre Ethier, Yimi Garcia, Alex
Guerrero, Brandon McCarthy, Frankie Montas, Hyun-Jin Ryu

the DL, which was likely the most to start a season in Major League
Baseball history, and their 13 total disabled list assignments (three
following the start of the regular season) lead the Majors (Colorado,
2nd
, 11), according to Stats, LLC.
